Smith George Conley Smith, 77, 1621 Scenic Dr., Elizabethton, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Hamilton C. and Mary Angel Smith. He had lived in Chicago for a number of years before returning to Elizabethton. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diana McGuire, a sister, Margaret Nicely, and two brothers, Adam B. Smith, and Caleb Smith. He formerly worked at North American Rayon Corp. Mr. Smith was a World War II Army veteran. He was of the Christian faith. Survivors include a daughter, Connie Marcum of West Virginia, two sons, Ivan Smith of Arkansas, and Joe Smith of Chicago, two sisters, Wanda Scruggs, Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Mary Alice Presnell, Mountain Park, N.C., two brothers, Dan and Wade Smith, both of Elizabethton, five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. SMITH -- Funeral services for George Conley Smith, 77, 1621 Scenic Dr., Elizabethton, who died Thursday, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Roy Canter officiating. Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in the National Cemetery, Mountain Home. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of a brother, Dan Smith, 1621 Scenic Dr., Elizabethton.
