Smith Martin D. Smith, 81, 136 Millard Cable Road, Butler, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Smith was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Arthur Grant and Lela Morton Smith. He was also preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. Mr. Smith was a member of Stout Hill Church of Christ and was a dedicated fisherman and farmer. He retired from Grandfather Mountain Golf and Country Club after 22 years of service in general construction. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Hartley Smith, of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Raymond and Glenda Smith and Arthur Smith, all of Butler; a special ex-daughter-in-law, Julia Walsh, Butler; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Floyd Mathews, Butler; two granddaughters, Donna Smith and Kristy Smith, both of Butler; three grandsons, Floyd Mathews III, Anthony Smith and Alex Mathews, all of Butler; two sisters, Stella Ward, Elizabethton, and Selma Dugger, Butler; and two special friends, Kendall and Hollie Cable, Butler. Smith, 81, 136 Millard Cable Road, Butler, who died Tuesday, February 5, 2002, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 7, at Stout Hill Church of Christ with Mr. David Irick and Mr. Donnie Cable, ministers, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Stout Hill Church of Christ Choir. Interment will follow the service in the Cable Cemetery, Butler, with Military Honors to be accorded by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166. Active pallbearers will be selected from friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Cable, Dr. John Ward, Dr. Charles P. Cole and Dr. Jeffrey Hopland. A special "Thank You" to the ICU Nursing Staff and Nurses of the 3rd Floor at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. The body will be taken to the Stout Hill Church of Christ at 4 p.m. Wednesday, where it will remain until the service time. Friends may call at the church at any time.
