CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Rowena M. Smith, 24 Jun 2002 ----¤¤¤---- Rowena M. Smith Rowena M. Smith, 94, Asbury Center, 400 N. Boone Street, Johnson City, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Smith was formerly of 501 Washington Avenue, Elizabethton, where she had made her residence for the past 50 years. She was a native of Johnson County and a daughter of the late David Grant and Lillie Gordon McQueen Matherly. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Lamar Smith Sr., May 4, 1984; an infant son, James David Smith, in 1924; a brother, David Earnest Matherly; three sisters, Lucy Matherly Lipford, Golda Matherly Cuddy and Hazel Matherly MacLaren; and a great-grandchild, Joshua Smith. Mrs. Smith was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 40 years, was a member of Women Missionary Union, a former choir member and organized the first Acteens in 1944. She was a homemaker and a former member of the Order of Eastern Star Sycamore Chapter #163. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Ernestine and James L. Baker, Johnson City; three sons and daughters-in-law, Norman E. and Clara E. Smith, Orlando, Fla., James Lamar Jr. and Josephine W. Smith, Memphis, and David S. and Lala Smith, Fairfax, Va.; nine grandchildren, Lisa Sisk, Johnson City, Richard L. Baker, Knoxville, Vickie Phelps, Elaine Smith and Jeanne Smith, all of Orlando, Fla., James Lee Smith, Pamela Riddle and Norman Smith, all of Memphis, and Laura Gorney, Cary, N.C.; 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Boone Street, Johnson City, who died Monday, June 24, 2002, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, June 28, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with the Rev. Ron Owens and the Rev. Harold Maines officiating. Music will be under the direction of Pat Presnell, pianist, Laura Presnell Seagroves, soloist, Jena Hopson Collins, soloist, and the Rev. Gordon Kyte, song leader. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at Roselawn Memory Gardens, Johnson City. Active pallbearers will be selected from grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Grace Baptist Church. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Saturday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton.
