CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Ernest Eldred Smith, 6 Oct 1956 ----¤¤¤---- Obituary appeared in the Sunday, October 7, 1956 Elizabethton Star Ernest Eldred Smith, 63, of Hampton, died in the Franklin Clinic Saturday morning. He had been in poor health for the past five years. A native of Carter County, he had lived in the community of Hampton his entire life. He was a member of the Union Baptist Church, and was employed by the North American Rayon Co., where he had worked for 28 years as a supervisor. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nanny Smith of the home; five sons Tom, John Frank and Hugh Smith of Hampton, Ted Smith of the home, and Reece Smith of Rt. 1, Watauga, Tenn; five daughters, Mrs. Kate Smith of Route 4, Elizabethton; Mrs. Blonnie Nash of the home; Miss Lillian Smith of the home; Mrs. Jenamae Lewis of Rt. 1, Elizabethton, and Mrs. Wanda Griggs of New Orleans; four brothers Clarence, Dan, and P.F. Smith of Hampton, and Oscar Smith of Route 5, Elizabethton; twenty three grandchildren and one great grandchild survives. Funeral directions are under the direction of the Tetrick Funeral Home. Funeral services for Ernest Eldred Smith will be held at 2:30 pm Sunday from the Union Baptist Church. Officiating will be rev. Charlie Campbell, Rev. Major Arrowood, Rev. H.M. Slagle, Jr. and Rev. Charles Souder. Music by the church choir. The body was returned to the home at 2:00 pm Saturday and will be taken to the church at 12:30 pm today to lie in state until the service hour. Active pallbearers will be Grady Robinson, Oscar Johnson, Gatha Campbell, A.C. Goodwin, Ed Stout, Charlie Peters, Haskell Ingram and George Oliver. Honorary pallbearers will be Shift No., 1 Viscose Dept. of N.A.R.C. Flower bearers will be the Adult Ladies Sunday School Classes of the church. Interment will be at the Union Church Cemetery. Tetrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. (Ernest was the son of John A. Smith 1865-? and Mattie L. Teague 1869-?.
