CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - James Roy Smith, 5 Aug 2004 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- James Roy Smith, 88, Quail Drive, Roan Mountain, died Thursday, August 5, 2004, at James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center, Mountain Home, TN following an extended illness. Mr. Smith was a native of Carter County and the son of the late James William and Sallie Simerly Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Milton "Sray" Smith and Sylas Smith, and two sisters, Sue Smith and Martha Laws. Mr. Smith was a farmer and of the Christian faith. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Virgie Laws Smith, of the home; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Mike Smith, Paul Smith and James and Tammy Smith, all of Roan Mountain; one daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor and Chris Brewer, Newland, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Heather Sims and her husband Chris, Elizabethton, Lindsey Smith, Roan Mountain, Christopher Brewer Jr. and Jacob Brewer, both of Newland, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 8, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Wilson officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Charlotte Smith. Private graveside services will be held in the Smith Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be David Brewer Jr., Christopher Brewer Jr., Lynn Ellis, Don Hill, Chris Sims, Topsy McMahan and William Birchfield. Honorary pallbearers will be David Brewer Sr., Bill Holden, Randy Stout and Rick Shell. The family will receive friends at the Rhododendron Chapel from 1 until 2 p.m. Sunday or at the residence, 115 Quail Drive, Roan Mountain, at any time.
