CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Gladys G. Tatem, 6 Sep 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Gladys G. Tatem, 97, longtime resident of South Main Street, Elizabethton and Pine Oaks Assisted Living, Johnson City, died Monday, September 6, 2004 at Asbury Place, Kingsport. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Delia Lacy Bellamy and the late James Arthur Grindstaff, and the granddaughter of Lilly Elizabeth and Joseph Mark Lacy, early residents of Elizabethton. Mrs. Tatem was a homemaker. She was one of the oldest members of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton and the original Dorcas Sunday School Class. She had been a member of the Senior Choir for several years. Home, family and friends were her lifetime interests. She had been a member of the Widows Club. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Tatem was preceded in death by her husband of almost 60 years, Bemis C. Tatem, Sr. on December 31, 1985; six brothers, Carlton, Jr., Bert and Henry Bellamy, Jim, Charlie and Karl Grindstaff, and two sisters, Mildred Reece and Gloria Sheehan. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bemis C. "Sonny" Tatem, Jr. and Caroline Tatem, Fountain Hills, Ariz.; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth "Suzie" and Ed Waller, Kingsport; three granddaughters and their spouses, Connie and Jerry Niebling, and Pam and Kent Hainline, all of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; Judy and Warren Tanner, Milford, N.H.; two step-granddaughters, Alice Waller and Christie Waller Heuermann, both of Marshall, N.C. Great- grandchildren who survive are Coy and Melissa Tanner, Luke, Daniel, Kristen and Caitlin Tanner, all of New Hampshire, and Hanna and Ben Hainline of Arizona. Seven step-great-grandchildren who survive are Julianna Olup, Emily Lord, Jim Lord, Oliver Watts, Ben, Luke and Olivia Dannemiller. She is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dick and Betty Grindstaff and Fred and Mary Grindstaff of Elizabethton; one sister, Nell Hendrix of Greeneville, and one brother-in-law, John P. Sheehan, Elizabethton. Numerous nieces and nephews and special friends Ann Brown and family and Patsy Pollard also survive. The funeral service for Gladys G. Tatem will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 9, 2004 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Polk officiating with burial following in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be under the direction of Roger Jenkins. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday prior to the service in the chapel. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Broome, Horace Broome, John Bunn, Johnnie Mills, Ramsey Pollard, Jr., and Don Blair.
