CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - William H. "Bill" Thompson, 12 Jan 2004 ----¤¤¤---- William H. "Bill" Thompson, of Ripshin Lake Road, Roan Mountain, who was born January 24, 1930, in Johnson City, TN, died January 12, 2004, at Johnson City Medical Center. Preceding him in death were his parents, J. Harold and Wilda Trotter Thompson, a brother, Joseph L. Thompson, and a granddaughter, Carrie Newton. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Nora Harris Thompson; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Julia T. Winters, Johnson City, and Emily T. and Charles Gilreath, Cartersville, Ga.; a brother, Steven C. Thompson, Johnson City; two daughters and a son-in-law, Marika Pineda and Sheree and Keith Gostel, Richmond, Va.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kelly Thompson and Frank and Donna Trexler, Knoxville; a cousin, Mark C. Hicks, Jonesborough; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Bill and Nora were members of Roan Mountain United Methodist Church. Bill served a tour of duty in the U.S. Marines in the early '50s. He graduated with honors from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1956, and also attended VPI and Georgia Tech. He farmed for several years in Hamblen County and Northwest Georgia, and was a skilled cabinetmaker and carpenter. He was a highly respected member and served as treasurer of Ripshin Lake Corporation. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, at MorrisBaker Funeral Home, with a celebration of life service at 7 p.m. Friends may also visit the home of a sister, Julia Winters, 1965 King Springs Road, Johnson City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Roan Mountain State Park or Roan Mountain United Methodist Church, 307 Johnson Street, Roan Mountain, TN 37687.
