Tipton Sr. 2/02/00 James Phillips "Phil" Tipton Sr., 72, 1117 15th Street, Waynesboro, Va., died Tuesday, February 1, 2000, at his home. Mr. Tipton was born October 12, 1927, in Elizabethton, Tenn. He was a son of the late Albert Carter Sr. and Nannette Thomas Phillips Tipton and was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Smith. Mr. Tipton was a graduate of Elizabethton Schools, East Tennessee State, and Virginia Tech, and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. After 40 years of service he retired from General Electric, Waynesboro and Charlottesville, where he had been an Electrical Design Engineer and Engineer Instructor. He served as a Deacon and Elder of First Presbyterian Church, Waynesboro, having been asked to craft the wooden ross that hangs in the church's sanctuary. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America as an Institutional Representative for Troop 44 and former vice-chairman of the Stonewall Jackson Area Council. He was a volunteer at Augusta Medical Center, Augusta County, and Waynesboro libraries, and at Summit Square. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Miller Tipton, Waynesboro, Va.; t hree daughters and sons-in-law, Nell and Wendell Smith, Lexington, Va., Lee and Tim Reed, Charlottesville, Va., and Beth and Scott McDevitt, Waynesboro, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, James P. "Zo" II and Jennifer Tipton, Waynesboro, Va.; a sister, Nannette T. Divine, Elizabethton; a brother, Albert C. Tipton Jr., Oklahoma City, Okla.; and 10 grandchildren, Kaitlin and Zev Smith, Katie, James and Leighton Reed, Emily, Grace, Michael and Scott McDevitt, and Veronica Tipton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. McDow Funeral Home, 1701 West Main Street, Waynesboro, Va., (540) 949-8133, is in charge of arrangements. TIPTON -- A memorial service for James Phillips "Phil" Tipton Sr., 72, 1117 15th Street, Waynesboro, Va., who died Tuesday, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 3, at First Presbyterian Church, Waynesboro, with Revs. Lynn and Albert Connette and Rev. Jim Black officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McDow Funeral Home, Waynesboro. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Education Fund at First Presbyterian Church, Waynesboro.
