Vance James Durward Vance, 81, 4112 Vine Street, Adrian, Mich., died Sunday, January 27, 2002, at Bixby Hospital in Adrian, following an extended illness. Mr. Vance was a native of Roan Mountain and the son of the late Sherman and Ruth Winters Vance. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Bernice Vance and Sylvia Miller. Mr. Vance was a member of the United Brethren Church in Adrian. He was a retired security officer for the State of Michigan at The Girl's Training School. Survivors include his wife, Helen Maude Harrison Vance, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Larry Sneed, Tecumseh, Mich.; a son, James Vance, Jackson, Mich.; a granddaughter; four grandsons; a great- grandson; five brothers, Sterling Vance, Ray Vance and Sherman Vance Jr., all of Roan Mountain, V.I. Vance and the Rev. John Vance, both of Hampton; and four sisters, Jewel Holsclaw and Mary Bunten, both of Elizabethton, Inez Johnson and Opal Jarrett, both of Roan Mountain.
