CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - James Howard VanHoy, 21 Feb 2005

JOHNSON CITY -- James Howard VanHoy, 86, E. 4th Avenue, died Monday, February
21, 2005, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

Mr. VanHoy was a native of Embreeville and had lived most of his life in
Carter County. He was a son of the late Ray E. VanHoy and Addie Casey VanHoy
and was also preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Dempsey VanHoy, and a
brother, Ray VanHoy.

Mr. VanHoy was a retired maintenance department employee of East Tennessee
State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in
the 38th Infantry Division, 149th Infantry Regiment, Company K, in the Pacific
Theater. He earned three Bronze Service Stars, the Asiatic Pacific Theater
Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Medal, Purple Heart,
Good Conduct Medal and a Bronze Star. He was a member of Watauga Christian
Church.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Kathy VanHoy and
Ronald and Mary VanHoy, all of Watauga; three sisters, Alma Vanover, Stella
King and Helen McKinney, all of Johnson City; six grandchildren; 15 great-
grandchildren; and his special and dear friend, Betty Curde. Several nieces
and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, from the
North Chapel of Morris-Baker Funeral Home with Pastor Donnie Humphrey and Mr.
Tony Duncan Jr. officiating. Music will be provided by The Harvey Family.
Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 23, at Monte
Vista Memorial Park. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Scott VanHoy, Travis VanHoy, Derek VanHoy, Jeff
Bowman, Jackie Dempsey and Paul Persinger. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy
Joe Andrews, Hobe Stanley and Tony Duncan Jr. The family will receive friends
from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made
