Whaley Grady A. Whaley, 94, formerly of 358 McQueen Street, Butler, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2008, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late William and Ethel Estella Timbs Whaley. Mr. Whaley was retired from North American Rayon Corporation and was a previous employee of Bemberg Corporation. He enjoyed making music, hunting and fishing. Mr. Whaley was a member of the Tennessee Hall of Fame Horseshoe Pitchers and the National Horseshoe Pitching Association. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Offie Holloway Whaley, November 16, 1987, and by four daughters, four sons and five brothers. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Robert Finney, and a son and daughter-in-law, James and Sandy Whaley, all of Butler; five grandchildren, Kay Ellis, Rogersville, Tenn., Bobby Finney, Ricky Finney and Chuck Finney, all of Butler, and Patrick Whaley, Mountain City; eight great- grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Frances Stewart, Butler; two sisters-in-law, Doris Whaley, Elizabethton, and Callie Lockmiller of Michigan; and special friends, Ethel Garland and her family. A graveside service and interment for Mr. Whaley will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, in the Lakeview Cemetery, Butler, with Rev. Charles Cable officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from his grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Seniors Citizens Center of Mountain City, his music friends, his horseshoe pitching buddies and his many additional friends and neighbors. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. Tuesday. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 31, in the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace or at Mr. Whaley's residence, 358 McQueen Street, Butler, at other times.
