Marie Whitehead 





    Marie Whitehead, 76, 978 Old Railroad Grade, Roan Mountain, died Sunday, 

September 17, 2006, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. 



    Mrs. Whitehead was a native of Carter County. She was a homemaker and a 

member of Little Mountain Baptist Church. 



    Mrs. Whitehead was preceded in death by her mother, Emma Matheson, her 

husband, Grant Whitehead, a son, Gary Whitehead, and a brother, Kenneth 

Matheson. 



    Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and R.C. Hughes of 

Newland, N.C., and Patricia and Jerry Cole of Roan Mountain; a son and 

daughter-in-law, Tony and Rhonda Whitehead of Roan Mountain; four 

grandchildren, Brandon Hughes, Jeremy Cole, Lucas Whitehead and Savannah 

Whitehead; three sisters, Patsy Cates of Roan Mountain, Phyllis Garland of 

Jonesborough and Shirley Johnson of Texas; a brother, James Harold Matheson of 

Elizabethton; and special friends, Nola Roberson and Retha Whitehead. Several 

nieces and nephews also survive. 





    Funeral services for Mrs. Whitehead will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, 

September 19, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Burl Sluder 

officiating. Music will be provided by Kathy Whitehead. Graveside services and 

interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 20, at Happy Valley Memorial 

Park. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 

10:20 a.m. Wednesday, will be Rick Whitehead, Joey Whitehead, Troy Whitehead, 

Jeff Whitehead, Chris Whitehead and Jamey Matheson. Honorary pallbearers will 

be Estel Whitehead, Jerry Whitehead, Leon Whitehead and Raymond Hill. The 

family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. 

Friends may also call at the residence. Family and friends will assemble at 

the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday to go to the cemetery. Online

    Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
