Whittemore Zola Gretchen Whittemore, 90, 191 Short Coal Chute Road, Elizabethton died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A daughter of the late Abraham and Etta Pierce Range, she was born Jan. 27, 1915, in Carter County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grant Whittemore in 1979, a grandson, Bradley Alan Gouge in 1997 and eight sisters, Myrtle Collins, Maude Morton, Ossie Meredith, Kate Sams, Celia Hyder, Sally Hyder, Hattie Vanover and Haskel Range. Mrs. Whittemore was a lifelong, active member of Big Spring Church of Christ and had served as pianist and organist for many years. She was a member of the Faith Sunday School Class and served as teacher until 2004. She had an amazing knowledge of the Bible, an unshakable faith in God and never missed an opportunity to witness. She loved sewing, quilting and was an avid gardener. After discovering a talent for oil painting in her sixties, she completed around 200 pictures, almost 100 of which were commissioned. Mrs. Whittemore is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Jack Johnson of Bluefield, W.Va., Judy and Andy Greer of Salem, Va., and Nina and Kenny Gouge, Johnson City; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Keith Whittemore of Thornton, Colo., Grant Lynn Whittemore, Upper Marlboro, Md., and Roland and Cindy Whittemore, Piney Flats; one sister, Nelle Pospiech, Inverness, Fla.; four grandsons and three granddaughters-in-law, David and Shelby Johnson, Kevin and Jennifer Whittemore, Scott and Jessica Bowers and Justin Whittemore; nine granddaughters and eigh grandsons-in-law, Maria and DeWayne Britt, Brenda and Kent Jenkins, Beth and Matt Bailey, Terri and Kirk Wishon, Sherri and Don McKenzie, Jessica and Andrew Webb, Jennifer and Jay Hardin, Cristi and Craig Ingram and Jamie Whittemore; 15 great-grandchildren, Savannah Spencer and Skylar Britt, Aaron Johnson, Brent and Kendra Jenkins, Phillip and Patrick McKenzie, Chloe and Elijah Whittemore, Tre Webb, Jordan Simerly, Morgan Depew, Kaylee Ingram and Maely Ingram. She is also survived by a host of friends, cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Bob Allen and Mr. Clay Bailey officiating. Graveside and Interment will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2005 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Scott Reynolds. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be the church family of Big Spring, a special niece, Wilma Kitzmiller, nephews, Larry, Gary and Carroll Meredith and Dr. Bob Sams, special friends, Rupert Range, Sandra Range, Jan Martin and Judy Black, former minister, Terry Lyons, nurses and aides on Sycamore Shoals third floor, especially C.J., Anna, and Tammy, Dr. Jeff Hopland and Dr. Peter Tuberty. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. Friends may also call at the residence at any time. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral chapel at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday to go to the cemetery. Memorials may be made to Big Spring Church of Christ, 1106 Gap Creek Road, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
