A native of Carter County, he was a son of Joseph A. Willis, Hampton, and the late Myrtle Tolley Willis. Mr. Willis had lived in the Watauga Community for the past 20 years. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation and had served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict, where he was the recipient of two Purple Hearts. He was a member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post No. 2166. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy T. Willis, January 29, 1998. Survivors, in addition to his father, include two daughters and sons-in- law, Shelby and Jerry Blevins and Pat and Robert Morton, all of Watauga; a son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Jennifer Tolley, Johnson City; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Eddie and Kyle Hyder, Hampton, and Glenda and Bob Hyatt, Elizabethton; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Dana and Mary Etta Willis, Gray, and Raymond Willis of Washington; six grandsons, Bobby Morton, Sam Willis, Dusty Morton, Zach Tolley, Seth Tolley and Gavin Tolley; a granddaughter, Jessica Blevins; a great-grandson, R.C. Willis; his special friends, Wanda Brummitt, Nettie Cornett, Shirley and Ed Whitehead, Herman Miller and Jeff Brumitt; his special mother-in-law and father-in-law, Orville and Edith Tolley; and his special friend, Gage the bulldog. Funeral services for Mr. Willis will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, September 14, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jackie Cole officiating. Music will be provided by Peggy Cole. The family would like to express a special "thank you" to the Carter County Rescue Squad and all of his friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
