John C. "Neal" Ward Sr., 89, 241 Riggs Road, Watauga, died Tuesday, 
September 21, 2004, at Life Care Center.
Mr. Ward was a native of Buck Mountain, N.C., and a son of the late 
Alex and Callie Laws Ward. He was also preceded in death by his wife, 
Gladys Carr Ward, in April 2004, an infant daughter, Loretta, a toddler 
son, Alex, and a sister, Pearlie Fields.
Mr. Ward was a retired employee of Beaunit Fibers with more than 40 years 
of service and was a retired farmer. He was an avid fisherman, sportsman 
and camper, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Bernice and Phil Hyder; two 
sons, John C. "Pete" Ward Jr. and his wife, Pat, and Gary "Dob" Ward and 
his wife, Judy; three grandsons and spouses, Phillip and Sharon Hyder, 
James and Leigh Ann Ward and Cory and Cherre Ward; two granddaughters, 
Kim Hall and Anisa Hill; along with seven great-grandchildren. Several 
nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, including a 
special cousin, D.C. Laws of Alabama, also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, September 23, at 
Memorial Funeral Chapel with Dr. Kenneth Jordan officiating. The eulogy 
will be given by a grandson, James Ward. Pallbearers will be selected 
from family and friends. Graveside services and interment will be at 12 
noon Friday in the George Mottern Cemetery. The family will receive 
friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral chapel. Friends may 
also call at the residence. Family and friends will assemble at the 
funeral home at 11:30 a.m. Friday to go to the cemetery. Condolences may
