Whaley Dewey L. Whaley, 80, 103 Starlight Drive, Elizabethton, died Thursday, February 1, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Whaley was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Henry and Clydia Timbs Whaley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Gracie Couch Whaley, September 19, 1999, and four brothers, Ellie, Leonard, Glen and Ed Whaley. Mr. Whaley was a retired pipe fitter with Bristol Metals. He had taught Sunday School for the past 50 years, having perfect attendance for the past 35 years, and was presently teaching the Bethany Class of Hunter First Baptist Church where he was also an ordained deacon. He was a member of the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Union Local 538 and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, D.L. and Martha Whaley and Delmar and Carol Whaley, all of Elizabethton; one half-sister, Bertie Whaley of North Carolina; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a close friend, Burnette Hathaway, Elizabethton. Whaley, 80, 103 Starlight Drive, Elizabethton, who died Thursday, February 1, 2001, will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, February 2, at Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, with the Rev. Burl Garland and the Rev. Eric Eggers officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Patty Hodge and Kenneth Miller, soloists, and Mrs. Sue Bowes, organist. Graveside services and interment will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 3, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Dr. James R. Couch and the Rev. H.C. Couch officiating. Active pallbearers will be Scott Whaley, Melvin Cole, Jack Wilson, Lawrence "Beardy" Holly, Lawrence Hodge, David Whaley, Dewey Whaley III, Luther Oliver, Cecil Eggers and John Garland. Honorary pallbearers will be the Rev. Earl Berry, Dr. Jerry Gastineau, men of Hunter First Baptist Church and members of the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Union Local 538. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. Saturday to go in procession to the cemetery.
