CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Walter R. Whaley, 14 Aug 2002 ----¤¤¤---- Walter R. Whaley Walter R. Whaley, 86, 181 Mallard Cove Drive, Butler, died Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Whaley was a native of Carter County and a son of the late William and Estella Timbs Whaley. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Roy, Claude and Charlie Whaley. Mr. Whaley was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation with 33 years of service and was a World War II Army Air Corps Veteran. He was a member of Little Milligan Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dorris Virginia Smith Whaley, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Sandra Whaley, Elizabethton; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jack Hughes, Hampton; a granddaughter, Tracie Shelton, Hampton; a step-granddaughter, Katie Anderson, Elizabethton; a sister, Francis Stewart, Butler; two brothers, Grady Whaley, Butler, and Troy Whaley, Elizabethton; a special sister-in- law and brother-in-law, Mary and Jack Forbes, Elizabethton; a special great-niece, Emily Harris; and a special great-nephew, Cody Forbes. Whaley, 86, 181 Mallard Cove Drive, Butler, who went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 14, 2002, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, August 16, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with the Rev. Cecil "Nick" Bradshaw and the Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiating. Music will be by Tracie Shelton, soloist. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 17, in the Butler Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Michael Harris, Doug Hatley, Paul Campbell, Jim Campbell, Sam Harrison, Bart Smith, J.R. Campbell and John Forbes. Honorary pallbearers will be Jason Clawson, John Bragg, Harvey Brown, Terry Stewart, Bobby Jack Fair, Ray Morrell Jr., Carrol VanDeKrol, Scott Webb, Jack Stalcup, Blaise Anderson, Bill Finney, Jerome Finney, Jeff Finney, Dr. Michael Kimbro, Roy Wagner, Fred Griffey, Jerry Tester, Herb Moody, Bobby White and the Adult Men's Sunday School Class of Little Milligan Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Mr. Whaley to the Little Milligan Baptist Church Building Fund, 4223 Highway 321, Butler, TN 37640. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Saturday for the graveside service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, prior to the service.
