Whitehead 05/06/99 SFC Billy Gene Whitehead, 66, 314 Ivanhoe Drive, Johnson City, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at the V.A. Medical Center. Mr. Whitehead was a native of the Whitehead Hill area of Roan Mountain and had lived most of his life in the East Tennessee area. He was a son of the late Dayton and Mollie Ingram Whitehead and was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Mr. Whitehead retired from the U.S. Army in 1971, after serving in the Korean War and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was an Airborne Ranger in the 101st Airborn, 82nd Airborne and 162nd Airborne Special Forces to Vietnam. He was a member of Red Hats and Special Forces of Vietnam and a member of the VFW Post #2166. He received numerous awards and medals. He was an ROTC Instructor at the University of Tennessee for two years and retired from the U.S. Post Office in 1992 after 20 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Roan Mountain. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Blair Whitehead, of the home; three sons, Billy Whitehead, Kissimmee, Fla., Robert Whitehead, Palm Bay, Fla., and Nicky Whitehead, Sanford, Fla.; two step-sons, Todd Blair, Piney Flats, and Tim Blair, Erwin; three brothers, Byrl Whitehead, Roan Mountain, B.L. Whitehead, Hampton, Va., and Vern Whitehead, Hampton; and four sisters, Ruth Hill and Geraldine Avery, both of Elizabethton, Lola Butler and Peggy Whitehead, both of Hampton. Eight grandchildren also survive. Morris-Baker Funeral Home, 2001 Oakland Avenue, Johnson City, is in charge of arrangements. WHITEHEAD -- Funeral services for SFC Billy Gene Whitehead, 66, 314 Ivanhoe Drive, Johnson City, who died Tuesday, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday from the Morris-Baker North Chapel with Rev. Curtis Hurt and Rev. Steve Coonse officiating. Interment will follow graveside services at 2 p.m. Friday in the U.S. National Cemetery, Mountain Home. Military Honors and pallbearers will be provided by a Color Guard from Fort Campbell, Ky. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 1:30 p.m. Friday and proceed to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 101 Fountain Place, Suite 15, Johnson City, TN 37601. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Morris-Baker Funeral Home, 2001 Oakland Avenue, Johnson City, is in charge of arrangements.
