A native of Hampton, Dennis Cove area, he was the son of the late John H. and Bessie M. Townsend Whitehead. Mr. Whitehead was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Zachary Brooks; a sister, Christine Rainbolt; and a brother, Samuel Whitehead. He was a retired textile worker at Bemberg Corp. and a member of Hopson Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran, serving in World War II. Survivors include his wife, Georgia V. Townsend Whitehead, of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law: Jackie and Theresa Whitehead, Hampton; Ronnie and Roberta Whitehead, Jeffrey Whitehead and Rex Whitehead, all of the home; six daughters and sons-in-law: Judy and Ronnie Holtsclaw, Joyce and Eddie Largent, Debbie and Larry Townson, Sandra and Ralph Potter, Mary Betty and Gary Parker, all of Roan Mountain; and Crystal and the Rev. B.F. McKinney, Hampton; four brothers: Earnest, Bymon, Mack and Lee Whitehead, all of Elizabethton; two sisters: Cordia Jones and Ellen Stout, both of Hampton; two special nieces: Juanita Jarrett, Roan Mountain; and Bobbie Ingram, Hampton. Twenty-two grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain, is in charge of arrangements. WHITEHEAD -- Funeral services for Steward Whitehead, 74, 203 Tower Road, Roan Mountain, who died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, were conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron Chapel, with the Rev. Ronnie Campbell, the Rev. Charlie Trivett and the Rev. Gary Whitehead officiating. Music was under the direction of the Sunset Youth Choir. Graveside services and interment will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, in the Whitehead Family Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be nephews: Jerry Whitehead, Larry Whitehead, Bynom Whitehead, Jr., James Whitehead, Michael Whitehead, Clifford Whitehead, Billy Pate, Larry Rainbolt, John Rainbolt, Lester Rainbolt, Roger Stout and Andy Stout. Honorary pallbearers will be Nick Hill, David Maples, Earl Lyons, Byrl Lyons, Carl Brown, Ralph Brown, Jake Townson, Sam Arnett, Bill Arnett, Stanley Largent, Willard Largent, Bill Street, Paul Smith, Malcom Smith, J.D. Smith, J.L. Potter, Freddy Largent, Herman Stout and Robert "Tub" Rainbolt, Sr., Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 1:55 p.m. for the graveside services. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at the Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain, or at the residence, 203 Tower Road, at anytime.
