CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Horace Maynard Whitson, 21 Apr 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Horace Maynard Whitson, 87, Big Springs Rd., Elizabethton, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004 in the Hermitage Care Center. A native of Greene County, Tenn., he was a son of the late Guy and Pearl Sluder Whitson. He had lived most of his life in Carter County. He was employed at the Bemberg Corporation for 40 years. In 1972, he started Whitson and Sons Builders which he operated until his retirement. Mr. Whitson was the last living charter member of Big Springs Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, choir director and Sunday school teacher. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Whitson was an avid supporter of all sports that involved his church and family members. He was also a farmer and cattleman. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Nancy Whitson, in 1997 and Patricia Karsnak in 2003, and by a son, Gary Whitson, in 2000, and three sisters. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Dorothy Morley Whitson; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Mike Sproles, Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Debbie Whitson, Elizabethton; a daughter-in- law, Elizabeth Pierce Whitson, Elizabethton; a son-in-law, Joseph G. Karsnak, Elizabethton; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, and a sister and her husband, Helen and Harry Shell, Oak Ridge. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A Celebration of the Life of Horace Whitson will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2004 in the Big Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Kyker officiating. Burial will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. The church choir, Sherry Hutchins, pianist, and JoAnn Marley, organist, will provide the music. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the church at 12:50 p.m. Saturday will be Tim Carr, Dawson Grindstaff, Dan Stewart, George Good, Kevin Burchfield, Freddie Gouge, Farrell Hutchins and Jack Keene. Honorary pallbearers will be his church family, friends and neighbors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 23, 2004 in the funeral home. Friends may also call at his residence. To those who prefer, memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Whitson to the Building Fund, Big Springs Baptist Church, c/o Elaine Emmert, 198 Big Springs Rd., Elizabethton, TN 37643.
