Williams 4/19/00 Mrs. Marie Slagle Williams, 79, 868 Highway 91, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Williams was a lifelong resident of Carter County and a daughter of the late Sabin E. and Nettie Honeycutt Slagle. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Houston A. Williams, a brother, John Slagle, and two sisters, Mae Slagle Potter and Margaret Slagle. Mrs. Williams taught in the Carter County School System and was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation with 46 years of service. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and the Republican Women's Club. She was a volunteer at Carter County and Sycamore Shoals Hospitals, the Veterans Affairs and the Carter County Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the Elizabethton Business and Professional Women's Club and held several offices. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday School teacher, pianist, Youth Department Director and Church Clerk. Survivors include three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mamie and R. Ray Grindstaff, Mrs. Rostand (Mary) Smith and Myrtle and Jack Shell, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, a great-great-niece and a great-great-nephew also survive. Brent Seals and Rev. Mark Street officiating. Music will be by John Bunn, soloist. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Sabin Shell, Rostand Smith, Bobby Ward, Bill Mosely, Phillip Ramsey, Tim Walker, Clifford Miller and Gregory Bowers. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Green, Bill Gentry, Victor DeLoach, Dr. Robert E. Grindstaff, Dr. Robert Walter, Dr. David Jones, John L. Bowers Jr., Eugene Waters, Charles LaPorte, Gene Honeycutt, Richard Myers, R. Ray Grindstaff, Charlie Smith, Jolly Tipton, Jon Cardwell, Joe LaPorte III, Tom Price, Rick Malone, David Crockett, Robert Cupp, Harry Givens, Allen Snodgrass, Barney Fondren, John D. Snyder, Rev. Clate Briggs, Billy Lohr, Ralph Hyder and Ralph Bowers. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
