May 5, 1920. Present: Hardin, J. E. Crouch, R. B. Crouch, J. W. Williams, S. W. Price, and Dr. W. J. Matthews. A. B. Crouch on motion of Hardin, seconded by J. W. Williams, is made temporary chairman. Carried. Moved by Hardin, seconded by Williams, that A. B. Crouch be elected permanent until the next regular meeting to fill out the unexpired term of L. D. Riddell. Carried. Moved by Dr. W. J. Matthews, seconded by J. W. Williams, that G. W. Hardin and S. W. Price be made a committee to with Carter County and others to pay 1/2 the expense of road and bridge at Milligan. Carried. Moved by J. E. Crouch, seconded by Hardin, that we adjourn. Carried. 25 May 1920 Regular annual meeting of the Board of Trustees of Milligan College at the College at 8 o'clock, May 25th, 1920, present C. C. Taylor, J. E. Crouch, Geo. W. Hardin, J. W. Williams, H. J. Derthick, S. W. Price, and W. G. Payne. Prayer by H. J. Derthick. In the absence of the president, C. C. Taylor was called to the chair. On motion of Geo. W. Hardin, W. G. Payne was made secretary perterm in the absence of S. W. Price, secretary. At this S. W. Price, secretary, came in. The Treasurer reported as follows: Insurance Total=$215300.00 Administration Building $75,000.00 Girls Dormitory $44,000.00 add $8,000.00 Boys Dormitory $50,000.00 add $15,000.00 President's Home $3,000.00 add $2,000.00 Burn's Cottage $2,500.00 Pooge Cottage $1,000.00 Burchfield House $800.00 add $1,000.00 Furniture in Aker Bldgs. $5,000.00 Furniture in Girls House $1,500.00 add $3500.00 Furniture in Boys Dorm. ________________________ 175,800.00 $39,500.00 Moved by J. E. Crouch, seconded by J. W. Williams, that the report of the Treasurer be accepted and adopted and that the treasurer be commended in the highest turns for his efficiency and fidelity. Carried. President Derthick's Report Increased vision and enlarged purpose has awakened our interest in men and women of large means. Mrs. Derthick largely responsible for the successful management of the school for past year. Dean Boyd--salary $2400.00 Plans for new year: 80 boys, 60 girls. Provide a loan fund for $500.00. Finances Current expenses $2800.00 12 families that have a million each: J. R. McWarin, First May, Memphis, A. C. Perk, Mr. Nansbitte, Mr. Will Erinvanter, R. T. Reeves, Thorn Phillips, Phil Groz, Dr. Turny, E. C. Hern. Four years ago Bro. Hardin was the only large giver, now, there are 12 of them. J. E. Crouch moved, seconded by W. G. Payne, that president Derthick the sum of $4200.00 per year. Carried. Moved by G. W. Hardin, seconded by J. W. WIlliams, that a vote of thanks be given to W. G. Payne. Carried. Moved by G. W. Hardin, seconded by J. E. Crouch, that Mrs. Derthick the sum of $500.00 together with a vote of thanks for her work. Carried. Moved by H. J. Derthick, seconded by W. G. Payne, that Bro. J. E. Gorsech be made the official solicitor of the College for West Tennessee. Carried. Moved by J. E. Crouch, seconded by G. W. Hardin, that the for the bridge over Buffalo Creek be signed by the Officers of the Board. Moved by W. G. Payne, seconded by Crouch, that the following degrees be accepted and conferred: Moved by J. September 3rd, 1920 At a called meeting of the Executive Committee of the College Board held at the office of G. W. Hardin in Johnson City, Friday evening, September, 1920, at 8 o'clock, P.M, the following proceedings were had and ordered entered of record to wit: A. B. Crouch, chairman, present and presiding. Roll call showed the following members present and answering: G. W. Hardin, H. J. Derthick, A. B. Crouch, J. W. Williams, and S. W. Price. President Derthick reported that it will require 60 thousand dollars to meet the current expenses and pay and additional bills for furniture and other improvements for the next year. And urged that the Trustees raise funds for this emergency. Finest boy's dorm in the brotherhood. Keeping out of the Federated Church Movement has saved us much. President Derthick is going to take the field and stay in it until the fund is raised. December 5th, 1920 At a called meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of Milligan College of Tennessee at the College on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, P.M., the following proceedings were had and ordered entered of record, to wit: A. B. Crouch, president, present and presiding. A roll call showed the following members present and answering: A. B. Crouch, J. W. Williams, W. G. Payne, G. W. Hardin, and S. W. Price. President Derthick reported that he had called the meeting for the purpose of considering the following matters: l. disposition of floating debt, 2. Endowment, 3. Budget. Incidentally President Derthick stated that he had just recently visited New york and had a conference with the trustees and officers of the Rockefellar Foundation looking forward to our endowment, the Trustees of the Foundations indicated that it might consider contributing to the salaries of teachers of the College as follows: $6000.00 for the first year, $10,000 for the second year. On condition that, within the two years, the College raise an Endowment Fund of no less that $200,000.00--the Fund contributing thereto not less that $50,000.00 and not more than $75,000.00. Moved by Hardin, seconded by W. G. Payne, that our president (Derthick), be instructed to invite the Committee of the Foundation to come and inspect the institution. Payne to proceed to the collection of delinquent pledges to the College. Carried. Moved by Hardin, seconded by Williams, that Washington County accept and guarantee $3000.00 of the budget for 1921. Payable before Jan. 1st. Carried. 31 Jan 1921 At a called meeting of the Executive Committee of Milligan college of Tennessee, held at the office of G. W. Hardin, at Johnson City, Tennessee at 8:00 A.M. , this the 31st day of January 1921. Present Geo. W. Hardin, H. J. Derthick, J. W. Williams, W. B. Kegley, W. E. Sweeney, S. W. Price, W. G. Payne. Moved by H. J. Derthick, seconded by J. W. Williams, that the chair appoint a committee to take up with the National Gov. a claim for forty thousand for burning of Milligan, this credit with six thousand ready paid. Object of meeting regard to budget for the year and the future plans for the College. also a program to approach Mr. Rosenwald of Creiago for a sum of money for the College. Present as an honorary member of the Board of Trustees of Milligan College Mr. J. A. Summers of Johnson City. 8 Mar 1922 At a called meeting of the Board of Trustees of Milligan college called and held in the parlors of the Christian Church on March 8th, 1922, present and presiding A. B. Crouch, president. Prayer by J. W. Williams. roll call showed the following members present, J. W. Williams, G. W. Hardin, A. B. Crouch, H. J. Derthick, W. E. Sweeney, and S. W. Price. The following visitors: Oscar M. Fair and J. M. Crouch. When the following proceedings were had and ordered entered of record, to wit: President Derthick requested that Bro. W. E. Sweeney be requested to preach for the College the fourth sunday in March for the morning service. He reported, also, that he had been to Washington to look after the claim of the College now pending before Congress. the justice of the claim is recognized, but the progress of passage is slow. Johnson City church is held by the Church of the state for $1600.00 on last year and $3400.00 on this year. and I can not close the campaign for the state until the Johnson City church has completed its quoto. Suggested a committee of A. B. Crouch, J. W. Williams, and H. J. Derthick to call together as a luncheon a few men and take up a subscription. Money must be paid by May 31st. Says he is ready to take up the work at any time the Board fixes. Crouch suggested that the work be done in 30 days and appointed Crouch, Williams, and Gouch Tate April 6th and 7th. Moved by J. W. Williams, seconded by G. W. Hardin, that for the purpose of raising the $1600.00 on last year, and $3400 Johnson City Church and Johnson City promised to pay to Milligan college a luncheon be called for April 6th and 7th. B. Crouch, president, the following proceedings were had and ordered entered of record, to wit: Roll call showed the following members present: A. B. Crouch, J. W. Williams, W. G. Payne, W. E. Sweeney, S. W. Price. Moved by W. E. Sweeney, seconded by W. G. Payne that Mrs. Nola I. Hardin be and is hereby appointed successor to George W. Hardin, deceased, as Trustee for Milligan College as beneficiary under policy X in the --- on the life of Geo. T. Williams, deceased, with full power and authority to collect, receive, and weight for the proceeds of said policy for the use and benefit of the college, and to that such to execute such releases and requittances in the name of our for the College as may be necessary to accomplish the purpose of said original trust in the same money and for and to the same extent same might, could, or should have been done by the original trustee. Moved by W. G. Payne, seconded by W. E. Sweeney, that Dr. H. J. Derthick be out is authorized to arrange for counsel and bondsmen of the first so as to enable the College to get the fund. Carried. Payne, that the president of the Board be and is authorized to take out $50000.00 additional fire insurance on the College buildings, making a total of $150000.00, as follows; $10,000.00 in the Western Grain Dealers Fire Insurance loan and $40,00.00 in the North-Western Mutual Fire Association. Carried. Moved by W. E. Sweeney, seconded by W. G. Payne, that Samuel Hyder be and is elected acting Treasurer of the Board. Carried. Moved by W. E. Sweeney, seconded by W. G. Payne, that a telegram be sent to Congressman Reece urging him to get behind the Milligan College bill. Carried. Moved by J. W. Williams, seconded by W. G. Payne, that the Secretary be and is appointed a committee to investigate the request of John W. Tindall for the use of the College property and grounds for 100 session of his Bible Institute.
