Know all men by these presents that we Joseph Venable and Major Merret are held and freely bound unto John Tylor esq. Governor or chief magistrate of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the just and full sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to which payment well and (surely?) to be made to our said Govenor and his Successors for the use of the Commonwealth . We bind ourselves our heirs executors and administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 19th day of May 1809. The creation? of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bound Joseph Venable hath this day obtained a license for his marriage with Matilda Merrit. Now if there shall be no lawful cause to obstruct said marriage then this obligation to be void else to remain in full force and virtue Teste Joseph Venable Seal Major Merritt Seal
