Hunter 66 Glencairn Avenue Ottawa, ON Canada K1S 1M6 Last recording completed October 1, 1998. Directions: From just south of Harrogate on U.S. Highway 25E, at the intersection of Tennessee highway 63, go west on Tennessee highway 63 approximately 12 miles. On the left will be a green street sign marked Davis Creek Road. Turn left (South) on Davis Creek road and go over the hill, at the bottom of the hill, on the right, is a large white house. A dirt road or lane goes to the right literally in the lawn of this house, take this road. The cemetery is about 200 yards on the right. After visiting the cemetery stop and read the inscription on the front of the Davis Creek Primitive Baptist Church, just past where you turned into the lane to the cemetery. This white house is built on the foundation of the house Henry Hunter built in 1796. He owned 500 acres centered about this house and is probably buried behind the Davis Creek Baptist Church in one of the two graves there. I have annotated most of the names. These annotations are in [ ]. Anything in [ ] is added by me to what is on the gravestone. I have provided some dates in [ ] from other sources. This cemetery contains a number of what I call crypt type graves. That is, the grave is surrounded by a stone on each side to a height of about eighteen inches and this is covered with a stone, making a rectangular box of stone about eighteen inches high. The inscription on these graves is on the end, on the up hill side. I first recorded this cemetery in the mid 1960's and at that time I was able to chalk the inscriptions on these crypt type graves and read each one clearly. Continued deterioration makes even this technique almost useless today. These crypt type graves are in rows. They are identified in this recording by standing at the gate into the cemetery and reading left to right. Top row: Hunter, Joseph March 15, 1791-July 4, 1879 [Son of Henry and Barbara (Bollinger) Hunter] Hunter, Elizabeth [Moyers] died November 17, 1862, aged 69Y 8M 1D. [Wife of Joseph Hunter, daughter of Michael and Elizabeth (Ausmus or Robertson) Moyers] Second row down from top: Graves, J[esse] B. born November 28, 1861 - [Son of Jesse and Serena (Cain) Graves] Proffitt, Elisha died October 25, 1845, age 27. [First husband of Catherine Hunter, son of William and Ruth (Stover) Proffitt] Hunter, Henry died September 22, 1854 [1856], aged 23Y 27D. [Son of Joseph and Elizabeth "Betsy' (Moyers) Hunter] Lynch, Chany died December 8, 1859, aged 53Y 5M 22D. [First Husband of Malinda Hunter, daughter of Henry and Barbara (Bollinger) Hunter] Moyers, Abraham died December 31, 1866, aged 77Y 9M 18D. [Son of Michael and Elizabeth (Ausmus or Robertson) Moyers] Third row down from top. Hunter, Jane [Hicks] [Second wife of Jordan Hunter], died October 6, 1845, age 21. Buried in the same grave, Polly Hunter, October 6, 1845-October 19, 1845. Hunter, Barbara died March 9, 1841, aged 18 [Daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Moyers) Hunter] Hunter, Elizabeth died January 14, 1846, aged 24 [Daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Moyers) Hunter] Hunter, Barbara [Bollinger] died December 3, 1846, age 77 [Wife of Henry Hunter, daughter of Isaac and Catherine (____) Bollinger] Now for the rest of the cemetery: I have purposely broken up the family groups in the interest of arranging them alphabetically for ease of search, however, the annotations clarify the family groups. At the bottom of the list there are additional names and dates of persons probably buried in this cemetery, but without gravestones. Also, some gravestones have been removed from the cemetery and where possible those names are at the bottom of the list. One of the most interesting graves in Claiborne county is in this cemetery. Just to the left of the gate when you enter the head stone reads: THE STRANGER died 1909. His name, age, and place of origin unknown. He worked at an itinerant shingle mill quietly and peacefully and when he died the citizens of this community gave him a final resting place in this quiet spot on earth. [Company M, 14th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Civil War, Union)] Some of those who are, with reasonable certainly, buried in this cemetery, but without gravestones: Edwards, Lucinda [Hunter] c1830 - March 19, 1888, wife of James Edwards, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Moyers) Hunter. Hunter, Jordan January 25, 1816 - September 26, 1881, son of Joseph and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Moyers) Hunter. Hunter, Sarah "Sallie" [Edwards] October 14, 1835 - , wife of Jordan Hunter, daughter of Spencer and Catherine (Riddle) Edwards. Leach, Catherine [Hunter] March 31, 1814 - May 22, 1890, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Moyers) Hunter, wife of (1) Elisha Proffitt, wife of (2) David Leach. Lynch, Malinda [Hunter] 1809 - September 23, 1881, daughter of Henry and Barbara (Bollinger) Hunter, wife of Chaney Lynch. Some gravestones have been removed from this cemetery and are used as under pinning on the white house at the intersection with Davis Creek road and the entrance to the cemetery. Two gravestones with the inscriptions facing the outside are legible. Others with the inscriptions on the inside are probably there and would be visible only by going under the house. These stones were part of the crypt type graves. The visible stones are: Dossett, Eliza Jane died September 24, 1844, age 21. Leach, David died October 28, 1858 age 54Y 3M 4D. It is a family tradition that the stones for the crypt type graves were carved by Joseph Hunter, son of Henry and Barbara (Bollinger) Hunter. The members of the immediate family who died after his death in 1879 do not have grave stones.
