Shults, which was taken from the Civil War Pension Application file of Michael D.Shults, who served in Company K, 9th and 11th Volunteer Cavalry Regiments (Union Army), as received from the National Archives, Washington D.C. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DECLARATION FOR WIDOWS PENSION Act of April 19,1908 Amended by act of September 8,1916 State of Tennessee County of Cocke. On this 1st day of September 1919, personally appeared before me, a Notary Public within and for the County and State Aforesaid, Harriet Shults, who, being duly sworn by me according to law, declares that she is 73 years of age and that she was born Nov.17th 1845 at Cosby Tenn. That she is the widow of Michael D.Shults, who enlisted Sept.20th 1863 at Knoxville, Tenn. under the name of Michael D.Shults as a private in Co.K, 9th Regiment of Tenn. Cav. and was honorably discharged Sept.11th 1865, having served ninety days or more during the CIVIL WAR. That he also served: No other. That otherwise than as herein stated said soldier (or sailor) was not employed in the United States service. That she was married to said soldier (or sailor) June 24th 1866 under the name of Harriet Williams at Cosby Tennessee by Thomas Matthews; that she had not been previously married; that he had not been previously married. That said soldier (or sailor) died August 16th 1919 at Cosby Tennessee; that she was not divorced from him; and that she has not remarried since his death. That the following are the ONLY children of the soldier (or sailor) who are NOW living and under sixteen years of age, namely: (This area was left blank). That she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the ACT OF APRIL 19,1908, as amended by the ACT OF SEPTEMBER 8,1916.
