SHAW, aged 42, died Sunday at 4: 30 p. m. at his home near Johnson Grove. He was a native of Weakley County. He is survived by one brother, James E. STANLEY, retired farmer who died at 5: 30 p. m. Monday at his home near Maury City were held at 2 p. m. Tuesday ay Maury City Methodist Church, burial in Maury City Cemetery. He was 90. He was born in Mo., moved to Illinois as a youth, and had lived near Maury City for the past 52 years. He was a Methodist and a Mason. He was born in Humphreys County, was 62 years, and a Methodist. He was a lumber mill operator in Dyersburg at the time of his death. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Clara Lou Duff MILAN; children, Dell MILAN, Mrs. Paul HESTER and Mrs. E. B. ESSARY, of Dyersburg; one brother, Claude MILAN, of Ridgley; one sister, Mrs. Delia O'GUINN, of Union City. Burial in Fairview Cemetery. DEATH--Services were held at Floyd's Chapel Church Thursday for Wesley Algie COOK, who died at his home near Friendship Wednesday. Burial in church cemetery. He was 54, born in Crockett County. Elmer E. GREEN were held at 2 p. m. Friday at Oldfield Methodist Church near Maury City, burial in church cemetery with full military honors. He was killed in action in France November 8, 1944. He entered the service in March of the same year. He leaves his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Bud GREEN and a sister, Mrs. Willie Sue RIDDICK, of Maury City. He was 77. He preached in this county several years and had lived near Trenton for the past 30 years. FUNERAL--Services for Archie McMILLIAN, prominent farmer, who died Tuesday at his home in Bells, were held in the Bells Baptist Church at 2 p. m. Wednesday, burial in Cypress Cemetery. He was 84. DODSON, widow, died Saturday night at her home in Trenton after a long illness. She was 85. She was born in Trenton and lived there all her life, a Methodist. She leaves five daughters, Mrs. L. F. MATHEWS and Mrs. Jessie MILLIGAN, of Trenton, Mrs. John P. WADE, of Brazil, Tenn., Mrs. Tom HEFLEY, of Ardmore, Okla., and Mrs. John C. PUTNAM, of Friendship; and a son, Robert R. DODSON, of Pittsburg. FUNERAL--Mr. James Kendrick DUNLAP passed away in the early hours of February 2, 1949 at the age of 86 years and 3 months. The funeral was held at the home of his son, at Fruitvale, burial in Belleview Cemetery. He was born October 12, 1862 and married Miss Dora Hortense CAREY December 10, 1890. To this union were born three boys and one girl; surviving are Perry DUNLAP, Earl DUNLAP and Mrs. Bessie WILLIAMS, the youngest boy passing on at the age of three months. He has one grandson, Kendell WILLIAMS, now in Knoxville. His wife preceded him in death thirteen years ago. He was born north of Gadsden, the son of James M. and Elizabeth CARTER DUNLAP, of a family of nine children. Four of his sisters survive; Mrs. W. Z. RAINES, Mrs. J. N. JACKSON, Mrs. Franklin CRADDOCK and Mrs. Lum RAINS. His brother, Roland P. DUNLAP died a few years ago in Okla. COXVILLE--Charles, six-weeks-old son of Mr. & Mrs. L. C. GORDON, died last Thursday and was carried to Waverly Friday for burial. MIDWAY--Tom MAYFIELD, an old and respected colored citizen, passed away at his home February 7th, after about three weeks illness. He suffered a stroke. SIMS died at the home of her son, Leslie SIMS in Alamo Tuesday at 3 a. m. A member of a West Tennessee pioneer family, she was born in Trenton in 1872 and was the daughter of the late Tom AMOS. She came to Crockett County as a school teacher in her teens and made her home with her sister, the late Mrs. Kate MOORE. Here she met and married Dr. J. P. SIMS. She leaves two sons, Leslie SIMS, Editor of this paper and Paul SIMS, Editor of the States Graphic in Brownsville; one daughter, Mrs. W. L. HARDISON, of Chicago, Illinois. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Church of Christ in Friendship, burial in Bell Vernon Cemetery. MAURY CITY--Born to Mr. & Mrs. H. E. JORDAN, a son, February 14th. Sunday, burial in Alamo Cemetery. She was 83. She was a widow of the late W. B. CANNADY, former merchant and Register of Crockett County. She leaves a son, W. B. CANNADY, Jr., of Indianapolis, Ind.; three daughters, Mrs. Gladys MURPHY, of Alamo, Mrs. Marie MOORE and Mrs. George R. SMITH, of Memphis; one brother, Robert E. BOYKIN, of New Castle, Ind. BELLS--Mr. & Mrs. W. M. FARROW, Mr. Raymond FARROW, and Dorothy; Mr. & Mrs. Edward POTTS and Ellison POTTS, attended the funeral of Mrs. FARROW'S nephew, A. P. MAYES at Humboldt Sunday. DEATH--Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p. m. at the Methodist Church in Friendship for Edd REEVES, well known carpenter and painter, burial in Sudbury Cemetery. He died of a heart attack while at work on a building Wednesday, He was born in Friendship and married Miss Zula ROBERTSON, who died a few years ago in Calif. Since her death, he married Mrs. Josephine ROTE in Long Beach and they returned to Friendship last year to make their home. He was 68. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Ernest A. REEVES, of Long Beach, Calif.; and one daughter, Mrs. G. F. BEAUDION, of Long Beach. DEATH--Elvin E. GEORGE, 36, a farmer of the Crossroads community near Halls died enroute to Baird-Brewer Hospital Monday morning after drinking a "poison highball" mixed with Cola. Services were held Tuesday at 2 p. m. at Southfork Baptist Church, burial in church cemetery. The death was listed as a suicide by police. He leaves his wife, Dora May Lumley GEORGE; two sons, Franklin GEORGE and Danny Eugene GEORGE; a daughter, Nancy GEORGE; three brothers, Herman GEORGE and Grover GEORGE, both of Bells and Cole GEORGE, of Rapid City, S. DEATH--Services for Don PIERCE, who died early Saturday morning at his home in the Cypress community were held at the Cypress Methodist Church, Burial in Cypress Cemetery. He was 71. He was a lifelong resident of Crockett County, and was a farmer. He was married to Miss Rosa BOYD in 1898, they observed their 50th wedding anniversary in December. He also leaves two daughters, Mrs. R. A. CROSSNOE and Mrs. Paul EDWARDS; one brother, Jim PIERCE; and a sister in Texas. DEATH--Services for P. B. MEACHAM, farmer and landowner of Crockett county were held Wednesday at Lebanon Methodist Church, burial in the church cemetery. He was 60. He died at noon Tuesday in Dyersburg Hospital. HAMILTON, old time showman, for many years a partner in the Hamilton-Kasley Co. touring this section, died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. A. CAMPBELL in Memphis at the age of 70. He managed the Bells Theatre and Roxy Threatre in Alamo for a short time before he quit the show business entirely. He was born and reared in Rives, Tenn. DEATH--Services were held Thursday at Holly Grove Church for George Walter LEATH, who died at his home near Friendship Wednesday, burial was in the church cemetery. He was 75. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Annie Mae LEATH; two daughters, Mrs. Leslie BAGGETT, of Humboldt and Mrs. Floyd SWEENY, of Memphis; one son, Murray LEATH, of Friendship; and a foster daughter, Mrs. Virgie STICH, of Corinth, Miss. DEATH--Fourteen year old Billy DANIEL had no mother and so he helped with the family cooking while his father and older brother worked in the field. But Billy will cook no more meals for his dad. He is dead from burns received when fire destroyed the farm house where he was cooking dinner. Coal oil is believed to have started the fire. He never regained consciousness to tell hoe the fire started and died late Thursday at Blytheville, Ark. The family had moved a month ago from Alamo, Tenn., to the H. W. WYLIE Plantation at Hickman, 16 miles east of Blytheville, Ark. Services were held at 2 p. m. Saturday in Alamo, at Cypress Methodist Church, burial in Cypress Cemetery. DEATH--William Andrew Johnson RIDDICK was born March 22, 1868 and died March 8, 1949, 14 days from his 81st birthday. He was a teacher. His hometown, Maury City elected him a member of Crockett County Court. After this he served as Postmaster at Maury City for 20 years and retired at the age of 72 years. He was married to Betty Howell LEMONS in 1891. Of this union, the following children: Mrs. Eva DEYERLE and Will J. RIDDICK, of LePanto, Ark., Mrs. Jack POSTON, of Maury City, Miss Katy RIDDICK, of Memphis and Royce H. RIDDICK, of West Memphis, Ark. In 1917, he married Hattie B. SELLERS, of Fulton, Ky., of this union the following children survive: Mrs. T. Warren GARRETT, of Murfressboro, and Mary Sue and Gladys RIDDICK, both of Atlanta, Ga. He is survived by five grandchildren: Royce RIDDICK, JR., of Cadet School, San Antonio, Texas, Betty Riddick CLARK, of West Memphis, Ark., T. W. GARRETT, III, Margaret GARRETT and Wm. He was a retired farmer, former civic leader and long time head of the Good Roads Bureau of the Memphis Chamber of Commerce. He moved to Memphis from Brownsville 47 years ago. Until he sold his farming interests at Searcy, Ark, last January, he divided his time between Memphis and his plantation. Burial in Memphis, Tenn. DEATH--Services for Mrs. Victoria Ann LOVE, who died Saturday at her home in Humboldt after a long illness were held Sunday at Humboldt Methodist Church, burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. S. WEBB from Gibsob County was in to see us recently. Mr. WEBB and his good wife were visiting their daughter, Mrs. J. D. WARD and Mr. WARD near Alamo. Mr. WEBB is approaching 79 years; his wife is 77; and they have been married over 60 years. They have five living children and six deceased and have reared five grandchildren. He was born and reared in this community. DEATH--Mary Thomas WHITE died at Western State Hospital Tuesday night at the age of 51. Funeral services were held Thursday at Bethesda Church near Friendship. She was the daughter of the late George WHITE, prominent farmer of the 10th District. She leaves three brothers, Jim WHITE and Durwood WHITE, both of Elizabeth, and Rev. E. O. WHITE, of Kervil, Ky. Her nephews served as pall bearers. DEATH--Ira W. SIMMONS, merchant at Halls for 44 years, who was reared in the Friendship community died Tuesday at the age of 67. He was a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Walter SIMMONS, of Friendship. His wife; a daughter; and five sons survive. (not named) DEATH--Mrs. Texie Anne WILKES, 80, died Sunday at her home in Jackson. She was the widow of the late Rev. T. N. WILKES, for several years, pastor of Alamo Methodist Church. Two sons, Judge Karl K. WILKES, of Jackson, and Tom WILKES, of Dyersburg; three daughters, Miss Ruth WILKES, Mrs. Maggie D. FOWKLES, and Mrs. Lauria FOWKLES, all of Jackson, survive. Burial in Alamo Cemetery. DEATH--Services for Asa B. TALLEY, of Union City, linotype operator for the Union City Messenger, was held at 3 p. m. Thursday at the Halls Baptist Church, burial in Halls Cemetery. He died Wednesday at Baptist Hospital, He was 55 years, born in Lauderdale County. He formerly worked at the Halls Graphic and for a time was with the Memphis Press-Scimitar. He was a member of the Union City Baptist Church and a veteran of WWI. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Nell Baker TALLEY; a son, John W. TALLEY, now a student at the University of Tennessee College of Dentistery in Memphis; and two sisters, Mrs. Marvin ROBERSON, of Ripley and Mrs. Nora PATTON, of Dyersburg. DEATH--Mrs. Lula Hunt NICHOLS, 60, died Monday at the home of her sister, Mrs. Marvin VERNON, of Alamo. She was married to Johnson L. NICHOLS October 1, 1939, who preceded her in death September 9, 1944. Services were in Nance Church of Christ, burial in Nance Cemetery. PRIVETT and Mrs. Maurine FOLLIS were married in Corinth, Mississippi Saturday, April 16th. DEATH--Mrs. Jesse TAYLOR died Monday at her home near Cairo. She was 62. Her husband passed away several years ago. MAURY CITY--The children of Mrs. John NANCE gave a surprise birthday dinner Sunday, April 17th, celebrating her 70th birthday. FRIENDSHIP--Mrs. Thomas BESSERT attended the funeral of her uncle, Mr. Ira SIMMONS at Halls last Week. ELIZABETH--News was received here Sunday of the death of Mr. Oscar HATCH, of Dyersburg. He formerly lived here. BELLS--Odie SEARCY, colored, a faithful employee of the L & N R R for 48 years, passed away Monday at his home after a long illness. He was buried in Belleview Cemetery. BELLS--Another old citizen of Bells, Lee PAYNE passed away last week in Bells. These colored men were among the oldest citizens of Bells and had lived here all their lives. FUNERAL--Services for SGT Harold E. CARMEN were held at Elizabeth Church Sunday at 2 p. m., burial in Elizabeth Cemetery. He was killed in action January 6, 1945 in Luxembourg, Germany. He was 26, and had been in the service since 1940. He leaves his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Robert E. CARMEN; five brothers, Leon CARMEN, Robt. Jr., CARMEN, Adrian CARMEN, and King Miller CARMEN, all of Friendship, and Charles E. She was born in Johnson Grove in Crockett County and lived in Bells before her move to Memphis. Her husband is employed at Gailor Memorial Hospital. She also leaves her brother, John M. She was born in Crockett County, aged 68 years. She leaves her husband, Claude; two daughters, Mrs. Eddie PREISSIG, of Chicago and Mrs. Thomas BADGETT, of Jackson; one son, Earl LAMAN; and seven grandchildren. GOOCH and her sons, Jerry David GOOCH and Johnny Ray GOOCH, all of Paris, which occurred late Friday night on a rain swept, slippery highway in an automobile collision near McKenzie on the Paris Highway. Mrs. GOOCH was reared in Bells and was the daughter of J. O. DUGAN and Mrs. Ora F. DUGAN. She was the neice of Rosco EVANS and Mrs. Frank WARD and Mrs. A. W. MOSLEY. BELLS--Mr. & Mrs. Wm. F. A daughter of the late David and Lucy Nunn MAYO, she was born here on Janusry 10, 1873. She was married to Joseph D. STRACHN, who preceded her in death in 1915. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. WALKINS and Mrs. Charlie BROWN, both of Alamo; five granfchildren and one great-grand child; and one brother, William MAYO, of Alamo.
