Hamby Pension Application Obtained from NARA [HANDWRITTEN AFFIDAVIT] State of Tennessee County of Roane On this 4th day of August AD one thousand eight hundred and fifty five personally appeared before me a justice of the peace within and for the county and state aforesaid Reuben Hamby aged eighty three years a resident of Morgan County and state aforesaid who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the identical Reuben Hamby who was a private in the company commanded by Capt. Ambrose Carlton in the regiment of N.C. Militia commanded by Col. Martin in the War of 1812 against Great Britain. That he entered into said service at Wilkesboro NC on or about November 1814 fro the term of six months and continued in actual service in said war for over fourteen days when he was honorably discharged at Wilkesboro on or about February 1815 as will more fully appear by the muster rolls of said company his certificate of discharge being lost he makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled to under the act approved the 3rd of March 1855. He also declares that he has never applied for nor received under this or any other act of congress for the military service he performed for the United States. Reuben (his mark) Hamby We William Mitchell and Caleb Ellis residents of Roane county in the state of Tennessee upon our oaths declare that the foregoing declaration was signed and acknowledged by Reuben Hamby in our presence and that we believe from the appearance and statements of the applicant that he is the identical person he represents himself to be and that they are witnesses. William (his mark) Mitchell /s/ Caleb Ellis DECLARATION OF SURVIVING SOLDIER FOR PENSION State of Tennessee Cumberland County On this 5 day of September, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy one, personally appeared before me Columbus Kearly clerk of the county court it being a court of record within and for the county and state aforesaid Reubin Hamby, aged 95 years, a resident of Cumberland County and State of Tennessee, who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is married; that his wife’s name was Elizabeth Mitchel to whom he was married at William Mitchels, on the [blank] day of [blank] 1801; that he served the full period of sixty days in the military service of the United States in the war of 1812; that he is the identical Reubin Hamby who served in “Captain Ambrose Carlton’s Company in the State of Virginia and was honorably discharged at or near Salisbury N. Carolina on the [blank] day of [blank] 1813; he further states that he served a portion of his time in the State of Virginia and a portion in North Carolina; he further states that he drew bounty land the number and date of the warrant not recollected nor the amount of acres; that his post office is at Hubardsburg, County of Cumberland, State of Tennessee, and that his domicile or place of abode is near Hubardsburg. Mitchell postmaster at Hebbertsburg, do hereby certify that after careful investigation that Enoch Farmer & James T. Shadden who as I am informed have testified to the loyalty of Ruben Hamby are persons of undoubted good character for truth and veracity and that their statements in the affidavit referred to are worthy of full faith and credit dated at Hebbertsburg September 6th, 1871. /s/ James W. Report: Above warrant issued to Reuben Hamby for his service in Cap. Carlton’s Co. N.C. Mil. from Nov 24 to Dec 8, 1814. 8-8-72 BRIEF OF CLAIM FOR A SURVIVOR’S PENSION In the case of Reuben Hamby of Captain A. Carlton’s Company, North Carolina Militia. Residence: Cumberland County, Tennessee Post office address: Hebbertsburg, Cumberland County, Tenn. Enlisted November 24, 1814, discharged December 8, 1814 Declaration and identification in due form, filed September 23, 1871. Service for sixty days shown as follows: Rejected by reason of insufficient service. Report from Third Auditor shows that Reuben Hamby served in Capt. A.
