Ms.Schubert was swimming with three of her friends from Crab Orchard in the Obed River at Potter's Ford, a real popular camping and swimming spot on the Catoosa Wildlife Management Area, when Ms.Schubert, apparently stepped into deep water, then she panicked and drowned, according to Deputy David Hinkle's report. Ms.Schubert, Michael Ingram, the victim's boyfriend, and Chris Thompson and Margaret Thompson were "playing in the water in a shallow area just below the bridge." Mr.Ingram told the deputy that neither he nor Ms. Schubert were good swimmers, the report continued. As the friends enjoyed the afternoon in the water, the current moved them into deeper water until the victim found herself in water over her head, the witnesses told police. Ingram said his girlfriend started to panic, grabbing him and pulling him under the water two or three times. The report said he was able to get free and that Margaret Thompson was trying to push her toward shallow water when the victim went under. When seen again, the victim's body was floating downstream in the fast current. Ms.Schubert's friends ran along the river bank until they could catch up with Ms.Schubert. Chris Thompson jumped in the water and pulled her partially out of the water, then he was helped by the other two friends. Members of the group then started cardio pulmonary resuscitation while one of them raced to a phone to call for help. With the heavy rains during the months of May and June coupled with a heavy thunderstorm Friday, caused the river to be higher than it normally is for this time of year with alot faster current. The Cumberland County Sheriff's Department spokesperson said an autopsy was requested as it is a matter of routine. Upon arrival on the scene, Deputy Hinkle found them still doing CPR on the victim, about 75 yards downstream from the bridge.
