   LYLE ANDREWS. In the office of city comptroller of Nashville, of which he has

been the incumbent since 1907, Mr. Andrews has shown marked discrimination and

executive ability and his administration has met with unqualified commendation.

He is one of the well known and distinctively popular citizens of the fair

capital of his native state.



   Mr. Andrews was born at Franklin, the judicial center of Williamson county,

Tennessee, on the 5th of August, 1874, and is a son of Mark L. and Sarah

(Wilson) Andrews, who are now living in Nashville, the father having been a coal

merchant by vocation during the major part of his active career. Mr. Andrews was

reared in his native city to the age of fifteen years and there attended the

public schools and also a preparatory school, in the latter of which he fitted

himself for matriculation in college. With this end in view he went to the city

of Nashville, but he was soon attacked with a severe illness, so that he was

unable to enter college. After recuperating his health he entered the service of

the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railroad Company, and for eleven years he

was concerned with the executive affairs of the office of the general passenger

agent of that company, with headquarters in the city of Nashville. He advanced

to a responsible position and admirably developed his powers through varied

experience in this connection. After retiring from this line of service Mr.

Andrews became associated with his father in the coal business, in Nashville,

and this line of enterprise engrossed the major part of his time and attention

for the ensuing eight years. In 1907 Mr. Andrews was nominated for the office of

city comptroller, on the Democratic ticket, and was elected by a gratifying

majority. The most effective voucher for the efficiency of his service in this

capacity was that given in his re-election in 1911, for a second term of four

years, and he continues as one of the honored and valued factors in the

directing of municipal affairs in the capital city. He has been a zealous worker

in the ranks of the Democratic party and prior to assuming his present office he

has served two years as a member of the Nashville city council, to which

position he was elected in 1900, as representative from the tenth ward.



   Mr. Andrews is an active member of the Nashville Board of Trade, the Young

Men's Business Association, and the Commercial Club, and is affiliated with the

local organizations of the Knights of Pythias, Benevolent & Protective Order of

Elks, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Improved Order of Red Men, National Union, and

Royal Arcanum. Both he and his wife hold membership in the Methodist

Episcopal-church, South, and both are popular factors in the social activities

of their home city.



   The year 1905 gave record of the marriage of Mr. Andrews to Miss Margaret

Flanigan, of Nashville, and their pleasant home is one of distinctive

hospitality. Their three children are: Lyle Andrews, Jr., six years of age;

Margaret Andrews, four years of age; and William Buck Andrews, two years of age.
