Hale RIGHT REV. THOMAS SEBASTIAN BYRNE. The present bishop of the diocese of Nashville was consecrated to office on the 10th of May, 1894. In the succeeding period of nearly twenty years Bishop Byrne has been not only the spiritual and business head of a large organization of church and charitable institutions, but has also from the fruits of his scholarship been a constant contributor to the literature of the church at large. Bishop Byrne is a scholar and writer of exceptional ability, and his name is permanently associated with Catholic letters. He was born at Hamilton, Ohio, July 29, 1841, a son of Eugene and Mary Anne (Reynolds) Byrne, and his training was early directed to prepare him for service in the church. He was a student in the preparatory seminary of St. Thomas at Bardstown, Kentucky, and was graduated from St. Marys of the West in 1865. Later he spent three years in the American College at Rome, and in 1887 Pope Leo XIII conferred upon him the degree of D. D. Ordained to the priesthood in 1869, he devoted his time to literature and teaching in the St. Mary's Seminary, and later had charge of the cathedral at Cincinnati. With the reopening of the seminary of St. Mary's, he became its rector, and from that office was elevated to bishop of the Nashville diocese. His practical work in strengthening the organization of the churches and extending the educational and benevolent work in this diocese makes a record too long for recital here. One of the conspicuous results has been the erection, in 1912, of the magnificent cathedral at Nashville. Bishop Byrne has translated, in collaboration with Very Rev. Dr. Pabisch, the Church History of Dr. Alzog's, three volumes, during 1874-78; Jesus Living in the Priest, from the Italian, in 1901; Abridgement of the Christian Doctrine, prescribed by Pope Pius X, in 1905; also Homilies for Every Sunday in the Year, six volumes; Common of the Saints, four volumes; Christian Mysteries, two volumes, from the Italian of Right Rev. Geremia Bonomelli, Bishop of Cremona. Bishop Byrne is author of "Man from a Catholic Point of View," read at the Parliament of Religions in 1903, and of other pamphlets, chiefly of religious nature. The bishop's residence in Nashville is at 2001 West End avenue.
