Hale REAU ESTES FOLK. Among the prominent sons of Tennessee is Reau Estes Folk, of Nashville. For many years he has been in public life in the state of his birth, and his name has come to stand for integrity and uprightness as well as brilliant executive ability and a firm grasp of affairs. As state treasurer he held a prominent position in the direction of the affairs of the state for a number of years. Although not at present holding public office his business associations give him about as much prominence as his public office, for he is general agent for one of the great life assurance companies for the middle section of Tennessee. As an insurance man he is widely known and respected among the members of his profession throughout the country. Reau Estes Folk was born in Brownsville, Tennessee, on the 15th of September, 1865. His father was Henry Bate Folk and his mother was Marietta C. (Estes) Folk. He has an unusual ancestry, being English and German in descent. The common schools of Nashville furnished him with his early education. His college course was taken in Wake Forest College in North Carolina, and from his college days the fascination of political problems exerted its influence upon him. His first venture was in journalism. He was a reporter on the Nashville American, and later city editor of the Memphis Scimitar. He was elected clerk of the Tennessee house of representatives in 1893 and was re-elected in 1895, 1897 and 1899. In 1903 he was elected state treasurer and ex-officio insurance commissioner. He was re-elected to this office three times, serving eight consecutive years. In 1911 he retired from office and accepted his present position, that of agency manager of the Equitable Life Assurance Society, his territory comprising middle and east Tennessee. Mr. Folk has always taken a deep and sincere interest in fraternal affairs and is a member of a number of fraternal orders, including the Masons, in which he is a holder of the thirty-second degree, the Knights of Pythias and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Mr. Folk was married on the 6th of February, 1901, to Miss Nannie Dudley Pilcher.
