Hale HILARY EWING HOWSE. Twice elected mayor of Nashville, first in 1909 and again in 1911, for terms of two years, Hilary Ewing Howse is not only prominent in the public affairs of his home city but is one of the leading citizens of Tennessee both in public and business life. In the case of Mr. Howse politics is not his profession. Having attained a high rank as a successful business man, he has devoted himself with like energy to the public service and has been prominent in political affairs beginning with his election from the first district to the county court of Davidson county, where he served five years. He was also elected a member of the state senate in 1905 and re-elected in 1909. Mr. Howse was born in Rutherford county, Tennessee, January 25, 1866, and was reared on a farm. He is a Tennesseean who has achieved prosperity and position after the handicap of early poverty. His practical career began with, his employment in a Nashville mattress factory, when he was eighteen years old. and for months he put in extra time at night on piece work in order that he might help support his younger brothers and sisters. From that beginning his ability and industry pushed him rapidly into independence. He became the head of the well known firm of Howse Brothers, a stockholder in the Broadway National Bank, in the Anchor Spring & Bedding Company and in the Rothchild Manufacturing Company. He is also a trustee of the National Junior Orphans Home at Tiffin, Ohio. Mr. Howse takes a prominent part in fraternal matters, and is affiliated with the Elks, Knights of Pythias, Red Men, Junior Order of United American Mechanics and Fraternal Order of Eagles.
