Hale JOHN A. PITTS. More than forty years of successful practice at the bar and high connections with business and banking have made John A. Pitts of Nashville one of the most influential and best known Tennesseeans of the present generation. He is a native son of the state and has risen by his own ability and years of service to large responsibilities and honors. He was born in Wayne county on June 3, 1849. His family is of English descent. His parents were John F. and Emarintha M. Pitts, the paternal grandparents being John and Clarissa Pitts, and the maternal grandparents, Abraham and Nancy Montague. On his father's farm, where he was born, he spent most of his youth, and his early education was obtained at the Clifton Masonic Academy. He was graduated from the law department of Cumberland University of Lebanon in 1871, and the same year opened his office for practice at Savannah, this state. From 1884 to 1888 he practiced at Jackson, Tennessee, and since the latter date has been a resident of Nashville. Early in his career he made a record for ability and thorough care and skill in handling his cases, and he soon reached the place where he could select his own practice. In 1886 Mr. Pitts organized the Second National Bank of Jackson and was its president until he came to Nashville. In 1891 he organized the People's Bank of Clifton, of which he has been and still is president. He has many other distinctions in business affairs. He is vice president and general counsel for the Fidelity Securities Corporation and for the Nashville-Gallatin Interurban Railway; is president of the Beech River Phosphate Company; is a director and general counsel of the Gray & Dudley Hardware Company of Nashville; and is general counsel for the Nashville Interurban Railway. Mr. Pitts was married in 1872 to Miss M. Ellen Ricketts. He is affiliated with the Masonic order and is one of the active members of the Vine Street Christian church. He is also a director of the Nashville Y. M. C. A. Mr. Pitts besides being an able lawyer and successful business man is one of the public-spirited citizens of his city and state, lends his aid and influence to the promotion of the welfare of the community, and is a loyal friend and supporter of education and religion.
