Hale EDWARD JOSEPH SMITH. Although Edward Joseph Smith has been in practice in the city of Nashville, Tennessee, only a little over eight years, he is recognized throughout the city as one of the best of his profession. Possessing the oratorical gifts that made the lawyers and public speakers of the years preceding the Civil war in the South famed throughout the country and abroad, he has in addition a thorough education and practical experience. It is natural that such a man should interest himself in political questions, and he is known throughout the state as one of the leaders in the Democratic party. Edward Joseph Smith was born in Nashville, Tennessee, October 13, 1880, a son of M. J. and Alice (Murphy) Smith. His forefathers were Irish, and the characteristics of the race, the quick wit and keen sense of humor, are to be clearly seen in Mr. Smith. After his primary education he went to Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, and then entered Georgetown College, in Washington, D. C., from which he received the degree of A. B. on the 20th of June, 1902. Returning to Nashville he entered the law department of Vanderbilt University and was graduated from this university in 1904 with the degree of LL. B. He began to practice immediately upon his admission to the bar, and he has been in active practice ever since. His first election to office came soon after he had begun to practice, in the shape of the assistant city attorneyship of Nashville. He was appointed to this position on April 15, 1905, and served until October 12, 1909. In June, 1910, he was made secretary of the state Democratic executive committee and served until September of that year. He has given good service to the city of Nashville as a member of the Nashville city board of education, and, in short, he is one of the men from whom people have come to expect public service, because he is ready and willing to give his time towards the upbuilding and betterment of the city of his birth. Mr. Smith is a communicant of the Roman Catholic church, and is an active member of the Knights of Columbus, being a grand knight of the order. He is also an Elk.
