The date and place of his birth, are not given in his pension papers. He entered the service in the fall of 1776 or the spring of 1777 and served as ensign in Captain Thomas Folk's Fourth North Carolina regiment. In January, 1778, he was transferred to Colonel Thomas Clark's First North Carolina regiment, with the rank of second lieutenant. At the time of his application he was called Colonel Robert Hays. Note: He was an original member of the Society of Cincinnati, in North Carolina. He died in Haysboro, Tennessee. He married Jane Donaldson.
