On May 22, 1819, according to his pension statement, he was 75 years of age and therefore born in 1744. As he enlisted in August, 1775, in Captain Benjamin Chambers' company, Colonel Hartley's Pennsylvania regiment, he was probably born in Pennsylvania. As he was a Corporal and Sergeant in that first year's service he was a man of character and leadership. He served one year under Captain Chambers. From 1776, when he reenlisted, he served a year as a sergeant under Captain Daniel Piatt in the First New Jersey regiment, commanded by Lord Stirling, (Colonel William Alexander). He reenlisted under the same officers in the spring of 1778 and was in a skirmish at "Spanktown," in which he was severely wounded in the leg and foot and totally disabled for three months. Subsequently he was attached to the hospital department by Lord Sterling and continued in that service until the close of the Revolutionary war. His service amounted to six years. In 1819 the pensioner's wife and eight children by his second wife lived with him. The oldest child was then about 19 years of age which indicates his second marriage as taking place about 1799. John Tate, Jr., aged 27 years, veteran's son by his first wife resided in March, 1819, near Carthage, in Smith County, Tennessee. This indicates the birth of John Tate, Jr., as in 1792. The veteran referred in his pension papers to a son in Kentucky but did not give the name. This suggests that he resided in Kentucky for a period before moving to Tennessee. He moved to Carthage, Smith County, Tenn., in 1818. He was still living in Carthage in 1821. He died August 12, 1835. Additional Comments: From: Some Tennessee Heroes of the Revolution PAMPHLET NO.
