Edgar Nichol Found Dead In His Bed Room ---------------------------------- Well-Known Nashvillian is Stricken With Apoplexy While Dressing Confederate War Soldier ------------------------------------------- J. Edgar Nichol, one of the most prominent residents of Nashville, was found dead in his room at the Nichol Building at 8 o’clock this morning. Mr. Nichol had gotten up from his bed this morning, and had partially dressed when the attack which caused his death came upon him. He was sitting on the side of his bed, and rolled over into the bed. When a Negro porter entered the room to make the fire he found it already lighted, and Mr. Nichol lying with his arms folded. Mr. Nichol had been complaining a little for several days, but was not seriously ill. It is thought apoplexy caused his death. Mr. Nichol was the son of the late Wm. and Mrs. Julia M. Nichol, and was born on the old Nichol farm, in the Second District of the county. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was a student at Princeton University, but was ordered home with other Southern boys. Though only 17 years of age he enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private in the Rock City Guards, First Tennessee Regiment, Co. B. He served throughout the war. He was offered a commission, but preferred the freedom of a private’s life. He served with Stonewall Jackson in his valley campaign, and took part in the battles of Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Perryville, and the second battle of Atlanta. At Atlanta, Mr. Nichol was wounded. At the battle of Devil’s Elbow he was one of the 200 men who kept back two regiments of the Federal soldiers. Mr. Nichol’s wounds disabled him for active service, but he continued with the army until the end of the war, when he surrendered with Gen. Johnston. He fought in every battle with Johnston, and showed great bravery throughout the war. At the close of the war, Mr. Nichol returned to this county, and went to work on his father’s farm. Twenty-five years ago he came to this city, and purchased the property which is known as the Nichol block. He also owned property in East and South Nashville. Mr. Nichol was a man of the highest character, brave and fearless in asserting his principles, and pure and noble in his ideals. He was a man of sterling business sense and honesty, and was whole-hearted and cheerful in his disposition. He was energetic, charitable and full of life. Mr. Nichol was one of the charter members of Moore Memorial Church, and took an active interest in religious work. In 1870 he married Miss Susie P. Adams, and of this union two children were born, a daughter and a son. His daughter died early, and his son, Dr. A. G. Nichol, of this city, survives him. He is also survived by one brother, H. D. Nichol, and two sisters, Mrs. Julia Moore and Mrs. Jennie F. Brown. The funeral will take place at 2:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the chapel of Finley M. Dorris. The surviving members of Mr. Nichol’s company, who number eighteen, will be the honorary pall-bearer. The services will be conducted by Dr. G. W. Bull. The burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
