H. Payne of Tennessee, was the man who wrote the book called "Ariel" some ten years ago. .. ...He was thoroughly educated and complete master of many languages. It is said that his memory was strong and accurate, that he never forgot anything. He was considered the greatest logician in the Union. His book "Ariel" was the most wonderful book in many respects, we ever read. A certain Reverend lawyer in Georgia made some efforts to impress the world that he was the author of "Ariel," but succeeded only in convincing a few cranks. It is said 13 months before Garfield was shot, that Payne predicted his assassination, predicted small pox in 1880 and 1883, also his own death in 1883 He died in the Davidson county asylum for the poor on Thursday the 7th day of June inst, in his 84th year. He was once wealthy, but died the poorest of the poor. He had been totally blind for some months before his death.
