Hale C. M. LOVELL, M. D. First mayor of Dickson and one of the founders of the first bank established here, Dr. C. M. Lovell is a man, of local distinction. The family which he represents was formerly of North Carolina, from where his grandfather, John Monroe Lovell, came in about the year 1807, locating first in Davidson county, where he became the owner of an extensive tract of land. There was born William Harrison Lovell, in 1810. He became a farmer by vocation and was married to Miss Laura House Lovell, a native of the same county and three years his junior. They maintained their home in Davidson county and as years passed seven children came to complete the interests of their home. W. H. Lovell and his wife were members of the Southern Methodist church and the former was a Democrat in politics. C. M. Lovell, the sixth child of the above-mentioned parents, was born on January 7, 1850, in Davidson county. The public schools which his environment provided gave him the educational opportunities of his childhood and earlier youth. Looking to a professional career, he subsequently entered the Vanderbilt University of Nashville, pursued the prescribed courses in the College of Medicine which is one of the branches of that institution, and in 1876 received his degree of Doctor of Medicine. In Bellevue, Davidson county, Dr. Lovell achieved his earliest professional successes. His services were valued in that place and there he remained for seven years. At the end of that time he came to Dickson, a rapidly developing town, and when it was first formally established as a municipality with city government, the doctor was honored by election to its highest office. He has continued his practice, but as he has ever had at heart the best interests of the town, he has been concerned in some of her most important improvements. The first financial institution of Dickson—called the Dickson Trust and Savings Bank—was organized in 1891 with his very active assistance and influence. He served it at first as cashier and later was made its president. In 1905 it was merged with the Citizens' Bank and became a national bank, with, a capital of $50,000. Dr. Lovell has continued to be associated with the affairs of the re-organized bank. In the meantime the professional services of the doctor have been called in requisition for the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railroad, for which he is the official assistant surgeon. He has held this position for several years, during which time he has been increasingly useful as a private practitioner as well. It was two years after embarking upon his professional life that the doctor established his domestic partnership with the estimable lady who was then known as Miss Maggie Morton, a daughter of T. D. Morton of Davidson county. Dr. and Mrs. Morton had one child, a daughter named Sarah, who on arriving at the years of womanhood became the wife of C. H. Wishart. Busy though Dr. Lovell is with his outside interests as vice-president of the Citizens' National Bank and as a director of the Diekson Planing Mill Company, he nevertheless has ever remained keenly alive to the constant progressive movements of medical science. He is a member of the American Medical Society; the Tennessee Medical Association; the Tri-County and the Dickson County organization of physicians. His fraternal affiliation is with the order of the Knights of Pythias.
