Hale J. A. SUGG, M. D., of McEwen, Tennessee, has for several years made one of the circle of medical practitioners of McEwen and has proved himself a worthy member of his calling. For three generations his family has been well known in Dickson county. His grandfather, John Sugg, came from Bedford county, Tennessee, in the early fifties and located on rural property in District 2 of Dickson county, where he followed farming throughout his life. He was accompanied by his family, including his son, N. R. Sugg, whose birth had occurred in Bedford county on February 21, 1844. The latter was therefore a boy of twelve years when his life in Dickson county began. Here he was educated in the public schools and here too he married and devoted himself to his life-work, which was primarily that of agriculture, but which also touched effectively other important fields of usefulness. His county sent him as her representative to the lower house of the legislature of Tennessee in the term of 1883-1884. He also held the position of circuit clerk for Dickson county in 1898-1902. He is still in active business. His first marriage was in 1871, to Miss Milberry Petty (1854-1881), who bore him seven children; W. J. Sugg, now a physician in Dickson; J. A. Sugg, the special subject of this review; Maggie, now the wife of Dr. J. C. Flowers of Lyle; W. A. Sugg, a resident of Humphreys county; T. D. Sugg, a citizen of Dickson; Fannie, who died in infancy; and Milberry, who is the wife of William Gatewood of Clarksville. N. K. Sugg married as his second wife Miss Mollie Beauford, who died in 1890, leaving the two children who had been born in the ensuing years. The present Mrs. Sugg was before her marriage to N. R. Sugg Mrs. Jennie Scowes, a widow. N. E. Sugg is a Democrat, a Mason and a member of the Methodist church, South. At the Sugg homestead in Dickson county, J. A. Sugg was born on April 15, 1873. The alma mater of his literary courses is Dickson College of Dickson, Tennessee. After completing his general education, he made use of that training by spending two years in teaching. He then entered the University of Nashville, where he studied medicine and in 1900 was granted the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Sugg's first practicing of his beneficent profession was in Bold Springs, Humphreys county, Tennessee. His initial activities were so satisfactory and encouraging that he continued in this location for eight years. In 1908 he made a change of location, coming to McEwen, where he is still actively engaged in a successful and lucrative practice. All the medical organizations of Dr. Sugg's professional representatives in county and state claim him among their members. He is a member also of the social fraternity of the Woodmen of the World. His political alignment is Democratic. It was during his residence and practice in Bold Springs that Dr. Sugg's marriage took place. Mrs. Sugg was formerly Miss Pearl Young, a daughter of Capt. I. P. Young, who was during his lifetime one of the agricultural citizens of Humphreys county. The date of the Young-Sugg marriage was 1900 and the ensuing years have brought to the doctor and his estimable wife two children, both sons, and named George and John. The doctor's family have won many personal friends in McEwen, as well as many professional adherents.
