Hale JOHN MILTON THOMPSON. This esteemed citizen of Dickson, who is now serving as a county trustee of Dickson county, represents a family of which four generations have been numbered among the citizens of Dickson county and of which two generations have been native to its soil. A part of the original tract of land in District No. 11 taken up from the government over a hundred years ago by Charles Thompson, the great-grandfather of John Milton Thompson, still remains in the family. This is a remarkable record in a world of so much change, yet it is one that the biographer finds frequently repeated in Tennessee, for the descendants of those first drawn to its soil have for the most part been well content to remain within her borders and have formed the supporting pillars of the state. Farming has been the favorite occupation of this family. John Milton Thompson was born in District No. 11, in Dickson county, December 4, 1854, a son of Thomas Thompson, whose birth occurred in the same county and district on January 9, 1826. The latter married Rebecca May Bateman, born in Humphreys county, Tennessee, December 7, 1829, and to this union came nine children, of which family John Milton is second in birth and is the eldest son. Eight of the children are yet living and are as follows: Elizabeth, who became the wife of Howell Thomas; John Milton, our subject; Webster, a resident of Dickson county; Cordelia, now Mrs. Henry Buckner, of Montgomery county, Tennessee; James and Mary (twins), the former a resident of Dickson county, and the latter the widow of William DeBusk; Lee, also located in Dickson county; and Nora, now Mrs. Lee Weeks, of Stewart county, Tennessee. The father passed away February 19, 1884. In politics he was a Democrat, and in church associations was identified with the Methodist Episcopal church, South. He was the second of seven children born to Jerry and Angelina (Tomlin-son) Thompson, the former of whom came to Tennessee from North Carolina when a young man and with his father, Charles Thompson, took up land in District No. 11, on Yellow creek. It is a portion of this land that has now remained in the family possession a little better than a century. J. J. Thompson, the youngest brother of Thomas, served in the Confederate army throughout the Civil war and was in the command of General Forrest. John Milton Thompson received his education in the common schools of Dickson county and began early to teach school, continuing thus engaged in various schools of Dickson county for ten years. He then took up farming in District No. 11 and it was after twenty-five years spent in that vocation that he became county trustee, to which office he was elected in 1910 and in which he is yet serving. His marriage to Mrs. Betty Guerin, widow, was solemnized October 13, 1886, and to their union have been born twins, son and daughter, Woolsie and Stella, both now at the parental home. In political affairs Mr. Thompson gives unswerving allegiance to the Democratic party, and in a fraternal way he is affiliated with Harmony Lodge No. 353, Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Dickson. Mr. Thompson and son and daughter are members of the Methodist Episcopal church, South. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson are both of Irish lineage and both are among the most highly respected citizens of their community.
