OREGAN,A LETTER FROM A DYER COUNTY MAN--Suisaw,Oregan January 1883 To the Editor State Gazette; (Many questions from friends prompted letter.)I will confine myself mainly to Western Oregan.In the first place,I will say I see a great many people here who say they are not satisfied with Oregan,I can say I am.Just the simple fact that I believe this is the healthiest state in the Union.The temperature is moderated in the hot as well as in the cold seasons by trade winds of the Pacific.The temperature seldom rises above 90 degrees and rarely falls below 20 degrees.It may be said indeed there are but two seasons in Oregan,namely;a wet and a dry one.(very long letter) John ROBERTSON,Jr. NOTICE--I propose settling the estate of W C DOYLE at once.All persons indebted to said estate must pay.Those having claims against said estate will have them paid upon presentation to me.S R LATTA,Attorney for Mrs.Jennie L.DOYLE,Executrix. Lawyer PARKS has been acting attorney general in the Circuit Court this week,he makes a good one. Mr.Henderson DAWSON and his sister Dixie,of Louisville,are visiting relatives in Dyer County. Mr.Ferd DAWSON was married to Miss Mary THURMOND last Wednesday night by Squire Wat SAMPSON. Judge Jo C GUILD,the famous Middle Tennessee lawyer,died suddenly at his home in Nashville,last Monday. Our friend,Mr.Charles I LOVE,of Ayers,paid us a pleasant visit the other day and subscribed for the State Gazette. Professor Walter DRAPER,after a few months experience in Colorado,has returned to Dyersburg and resumed the practice of law. Capt.Tom BUCHANAN's cotton gin,on the Mississippi river,caught fire last Saturday and was damaged to the amount of one hundred dollars. 'Squire Henderson CLARK,one of the oldest and best known citizens of Dyer county,is lying at the point of death at his home near Dyersburg. Miss Leila BRYANT,aged 13 years,was burnt to death by her clothing catching fire last Tuesday,while left alone at her home,near Harris' school house. Mr.David BELL's store house at Fowkles Station,together with all contents,was destroyed by fire early last Thursday morning.Slight insurance. Hon.Beverly THOMAS,Mayor of Dyersburg,will soon go to visit Florida. Captain Lewis WILLIAMS was Foreman of the Grand Jury and Moreau MICHELL its Clerk.It would be hard to find two men who could discharge duties more efficiently. The other day while hauling a big log up the tramway at Mack STEVENS'sawmill,the chain broke and away went both out into the depts of the Forked River.The mill suspended operations and all hands went to drag for the chain. RIPLEY NEWS--Misses SOLOMON,DOYLE,THOMAS and FORD,four of Dyersburg's interesting ladies,paid our town a visit during the Christmas holidays,guests of Mr.& Mrs.Sam CARSON during their stay. D R HENDRICKS,one of our oldest citizens,has advertised his property for sale.He and his wife are almost ready to drop into the grave from age and afflictions,still he will sacrifice all to go west (Texas) in search of health,which he will never enjoy this side of eternity.How strange men will act. Wiley FROST's little girl fell down with a pot of coffee and scalded her leg and foot severely,but not dangerously. W G EDWARDS,formerly of Richwoods,lost his wife last Thursday.She had been afflicted with apoplexy for sometime. COUNTY NEWS FROM MILLER'S CHAPEL--We had a pleasant farwell address from our brother and friend,P S TAYLOR on Sunday;the last day of the year.It was a hard trial to give him up. A H WALKER killed and shipped pork to Ripley at 8 cts. Uncle Billy MOORE and son have given up the idea of moving to Arkansas. A M STEVENS is making things lively cutting poplar and hauling thro' mud and rain. A young man was accidently killed the other day in the woods.He was loading his gun with the breech on a log,when it slipped off emptying the charge into his lungs,from the effects of which he died that night.(no name given.) RO-ELLEN NEWS--Miss Laura WALKER & Miss Maggie THOMAS opened school at this place on the first Monday in this month. Willie PAYNE had the misfortune to lose his fine mule,Noah,the other day. J D SWIFT commenced school at Esqr.HENDRIX's on the fitst Monday. Uncle Zeke HENDERSON is a little out of humor just now,can't guess the weather nor tell when spring will come,and says Easter Sunday comes on Monday this year sure,and when that is the case,a bad crop year comes.Also says the big storm will come between the 9th and 11th of March,and says he's going to start for his hole soon,as he is one-legged. A DYER COUNTY BOY MARRIES--We copy the following from the Peekskill,NY Democrat of October 21,1882.The happy man alluded to is a brother of our fellow-townsman,"Squire Hick DOYLE: St.Peter's Espicopal Church was literally packed on Thursday afternoon last,despite the descending rain,by the most brilliant gathering of Peekskill's wealth,youth and beauty,perhaps ever seen within its walls,called together to witness the marriage ceremony of Miss Kate Amelia,eldest daughter of Dr.Thomas SNOWDEN, and Robert M.DOYLE of Tennessee,an ensign in the United States Navy. The STATE GAZETTE VOLUME XVII NO.#2 JANUARY 13,1883 ROLL #301 TENNESSEE STATE ARCHIVES STATE GAZETTE DYERSBURG,TENNESSEE VOLUME XVII NO. 3 SATURDAY JANUARY 20,1883 COTTON GIN DESTROYED--Mr.Jeff FITZHUGH's gin,some eight miles south of Dyersburg,was destroyed by fire last Tuesday night,together with nine bales of cotton,most of which belonged to the farmers in that neighborhood.Loss about $3,500;insurance $1,500. A GOOD MOVE--There is now a movement on foot,headed by Mr.James BAKER,to start a cotton-seed oil mill in our town.Dyersburg is certainly a fine point for such a thing. AN AGED LADY--Mrs.Evalina RICHARDSON,the venerable widow of the late Dr.Stith RICHARDSON,was eighty-one years old last Wednesday and is nearly as spry as our good friend,Col.Robert I CHESTER.She came from Ripley the other day,on the cars by herself,and is now contemplating making a trip to Alabama alone. FACTS & FANCIES,LOCAL & OTHERWISE--Mack HARTON is putting up a business house at the railroad depot. Mr.Rube BUTTERWORTH's handsome and commodious new brick house will soon be ready to move into. Russell SAGE,the New York millionaire is worth $75,ooo,ooo,and his income is $15 a minute. Gen.W C PENDLETON,chief of artillery of the army of Northern Virginia during the late war is dead. Capt.R A BURKE has moved into his handsome new residence and is proud of his new house. Rev.Jos.BORUM will preach at the Baptist tomorrow. Little Bettie SMITH,who broke her leg while playing at school last week,is getting along nicely under the care of her father,Dr.J D SMITH. The steamer,Alf Stevens,is now ready for business and will start for St.Louis just as soon as the Mississippi is clear of ice.Capt.BRACKIN will be in command. Mr.John SAWYER is making some valuable improvements in the Sawyer Hall.He is putting up steps on the outside and will put in more seats. H S NEAL was married to Laura EUDALY,at the residence of Jesse NORTH,by Rev.D A BRIGHAM,last Thursday evening. Mr.R M EPPSTEIN,the gentlemanly agent of the Mason & Hamlin Organ Co.,is in town. PERSONAL MENTION--John WALKER is now bookkeeper at J W BAKER's planing mill. Miss Dollie BENTON has gone to Nashville to attend Ward's Seminary. W C BROWN has sold his residence to Mr.BRINKLEY and gone to Arkansas. Theodore KING makes a tip-top express agent. George WEIMER has returned to Dyersburg and will make this his future home. Miss Mollie PIERCE,a most estimable young lady,now has charge of the public school at Fort Hudson. Capt.J F PICKETT,our new depot agent,is an experienced railroad man. Covington Record;Dr.S BUFORD,of Dyersburg,was in town this week.The doctor has lately moved to Dyersburg and gone into the drug business. Post-Master John SINCLAIR was married last Thursday to Miss Della NUNN,at Chestnut Bluff. Lawyer J H WARREN is visiting friends & relatives in Dyer County. Frank SHEPARD never lets anybody get ahead of him.He is once more the parental progenitor of a new baby girl. Forrest FERGUSON,one of the best young men Dyersburg ever turned out,is on a visit from St.Louis this week. Messrs.Chas C MOSS & Billy BELL have formed a law partnership. Mr.Ed WILLIAMD,of Newbern,is now traveling agent for a big lumber firm of Chicago. RO-ELLEN NEWS--Mr.Fayette Fuller's little daughter,Mattie,is quite sick with pneumonia. Mr.William Woods' Little daughter was burned very badly this week.While playing around a fire in the woods her dress caught fire and she would have been burned to death,but her mother ran to her rescue and in a hole of water nearby baptised her,and thus the flames were extinquished. Mr.George PIERCE has bought Dick RANEY'S farm and moved to our neighborhood.Mr.RANEY has bought the FITZHUGH place and has moved to it. Miss Bettie SAWYER,of this neighborhood,is teaching school at Friendship.Miss Bettie is a young lady we are proud of and thr Friendship people have displayed good sense in selecting her for a teacher. Miss Nannie WARREN will commence teaching school near Squire Hall's some two miles north of this place.Miss Nannie was educated at McKenzie,Tenn. Mr.Walter THOMAS,of Middle Tennessee,starts home,then comes back to see his brother Frank.Oh,how he loves him since he met Miss (left blank).Mr.Henry WARREN,of Carroll County,is on a visit to his uncle,Dr.WARREN.He's liking his uncle muchly now,and says he only came down to make arrangements to go to Texas.I wonder who he is making that arrangement with? FROM FOWKLES STATION--Emerson McCOY spent the holidays with his friends. McBRIDE has sold his dry goods to Mr.SUMMARS and expects to rebuild,but doesn't think he will merchandise anymore.He says he has lost about $2000-all he has made in 15 years. Signed Jason Jones. The measles have prevailed in this vicinity for two months.For sometime it was confined to the negroes,but it has proven itself of rather a civil rights character,not respecting race or color. FROM HURRICANE HILL--Mr.J P APPLE and wife of Los Angeles,Calif.,who has been visiting his brother,M V APPLE,of Hurricane neighborhood,left last Tuesday for NC where they will(rest of page gone. FROM STOKES--To the delight of many bearers,Rev.Joe McCLESKY preached an excellant sermon at Green Hill last Wednesday. The commissioners have employed teachers for the three schools in District #7.They are Miss NELSON at Stokes;Miss KING at Holly Grove;and J F SMITH at Independence. Having suggested the insolvancy of the estate of Mrs.E L FORD,deceased,to the County Court Clerk of Dyer County,TN,all persons having claims,etc.;B B WATKINS,Administrator July 13,1887. DEATH AT THE GRAVE;NASHVILLE,TENN.,JULY 12--A most remarkable occurrence followed a negro funeral at Mt.Pleasant,about sixty miles south of Nashville,today,nine negroes being killed by a single stroke of lightening.a large party followed the remains of Harriett TERRY to the grave,singing and shouting.The usual ceremonies at the grave were performed and just as the final prayer had been said,dark ominous clouds came up from the east.The party had scareclyleft the grave when one of the most severe thunder and rain storms ever known to that section,burst upon them.All immediately made a break for various trees scattered around the graveyard.Scarcely had the negroes who were killed reached the shelter of an immense oak,when a terible thundercloud burst and the tree was struck.The whole party of nine tumbled down and died. THE BARBECUE--The grand barbecue and Prohibition rally of last Saturday,gotten up by the temperance colored people of Dyersburg was estimated attendance of three or four thousand people,composed of equally of white and colored.Owing of some who read the bills,did not know that it was a colored affair,and were inclined to complain at the prominence of the colored speakers.(large strip gone from across this page.)Only three names mentioned;T E RICHARDSON; Mr.SEARCY,colored and Hon.S S McELWEE,colored. COVINGTON RECORD--Mr.J L JACOCKS,reporter of the Covington Lodge of Knights of Honor,has received a check for $2000,made payable to Mrs.LOCKERT,of CLARKSVILLE,Tenn.,mother of the late R H LOCKERT,who died in San Antonio,Texas on the 20th of April last. PERSONAL MENTION--John NICHOLS is now firing another kiln of brick. Mrs.R A BURKE is visiting relatives ar Yazoo City,Miss. Prof.J A PAUL will teach school at Friendship next term. Miss Bettie PATE is visiting N C WHITE's family at Gainsville,GA. Mrs.Gus McGINNIS & Mr.Henry VAUGHN have returned from Texas. Editor Tom SPARKS,of Ripley News,came over to the barbecue last Saturday. Mr.Greer WELLS of Trenton,is visiting this section in the interest of his plow factory. Mrs.Wilson WYNNE,aged 81 years,died at her home in the 10th district on the 11th,inst. Mrs.Louis HARRISON,who has been quite sick with fever,is slowly recovering,we are glad to state. Mrs.Margarett,wife of Mr.Joe WALKER,died at her home in the 2nd district last Saturday night of flux. Mr.A H WALKER's infant son died at his residence in the Miller Chapel neighborhood on the 9th (large strip torn from middle of page). Mr.John GRIFFIN,of Fayetteville,Arkansas has been visiting his parents, 'Squire Tim GRIFFIN and wife near Fowkles this week. Mrs.Danula SKIPPER,wife of Capt.Tom SKIPPER and only daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Harvey ARMSTRONG,died at her home in this place last Saturday night. The other day Mr.E W BAKER sent to our office a cluster of 33 apples on one stem.The apples,of good size,all lay together like a bunch of grapes on the stem,which was not more than six inches long. Miss Ida DUNCAN has gone to Water Valley,Miss.,where she will spend the vacation visiting friends and family.She will return in August and resume her position in the M & F College in Dyersburg. About four weeks ago,Dr.J B WILKERSON,near Ro-Ellen,took up a 3-year-old blazed face bay mare and a 1- year-old gray colt.The owner can get them by proving property and paying for this notice. Gen.Henry McCULLOUGH,of Texas,brother of the famous Gen'l Ben McCULLOUGH,has been visiting relatives in Dyer county this week.He has been the guest of Mrs.Nat TARRANT,whose mother is the sister of Gen.McCULLOUGH. MR.J.Tra JONES,of Newbern,called on us this week and left for print the copy for the annual catalogue for the Male & Female Seminary.Mr.JONES is the secretary of the board of trustees of this institution.
