THE DEATH OF MRS.POLK--Mrs.James K POLK died Friday,August 14,1891. YES,LIFE IS WORTH THE LIVING--Little George HENRY,one of the best and brightest boys in Dyer County,has our thanks for a nice big baskett full of nice grapes.The boy who remembers the Editor,is the hope of his country. Dennis GRANVILLE,one of our colored subscribers,who has read the State Gazette for many years,presented us a fine big watermelon the other day.He does this every year and we wish to thank Dennis for his kindess. High Sheriff Jo.TURNEY of Nashville,dropped down Wednesday and escorted Mack MURPHEY, Felix ROBERTSON and A G WILSON to the penitentiery;the former goes for three years,the others four years each. Mr.Jas.McCLERKIN died in Dyersburg last Wednesday at the residence of his son,Tom.Mr.McCLERKIN came recently from Henderson County where he lived for many years.He was the father of our fellow townsmen,Luther & Jim McCLERKIN. Mr.Wiley SIMPSON died at Princeton,Ky.,last Friday and was buried at this place last Sunday.For many years he was a successful merchant at Dyersburg.He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss. SHE PLAYED MAN--Alamo Sentinel:Three or four weeks ago we published a notice of a man-woman being brought here from Friendship and lodged in jail for forging an order for goods,with Mr.Elijah HAWKINS name signed to it.During his-hers confinement in jail,quite a number of persons have visited him- her,and all believed him to be a her,but as he or she had on male attire they thought they might be mistaken.Judge BOND ordered the sheriff to have him-her examined,and proving he was a she,named Agnes RANKIN,but she has heretofore known here as Sam RANKIN.Her mother and young brother arrived Monday fron Halls Station. ANOTHER BIG FIRE AT DYERSBURG--Last Monday morning at 1 o'clock,Dyersburg was visited by another disastrous fire which completely destroyed four business houses on the east side of the public square.The origin of it unknown though it started on the ground floor of the State Gazette block,in a store occupied by J D PRITCHARD & Co.,as a bakery,eating house and family grocery.They lost their entire stock.The adjoining building owned by J E HARTON,was occupied by Charley MORRISON as a saloon.The next building,a two story frame was occupied and owned by Mrs.GOLDSMITH,as a family grocery,with residence upstairs.She lost all her stock and most all of her furniture.The next building on the north,was owned by Mrs.Tennie ROOK,and occupied by John HALE,colored,as a barber shop,Mrs.ROOK had insurance on the building and John HALE carried four hundred dollars on his barber shop.Mrs.L A WILDING, who occupies the upstairs over the barber shop as a dress-making establishment and residence,lost everything,barely escaping with their lives.The State Gazette building and printing office are a total loss-partial insurance.G Leslie EMINISOR lost his famous "Chickasaw" wheel in the fire.Henry LLOYD also lost a fine wheel. MARRIED AT CHURCH--Last Tuesday night,Miss Nannie PARKER and Dr.Robert A.BURKE,were married at the C.P.Church by Rev.G T STAINBACK.The attendants were Mr.Gordon BURKE and Miss Carrie FOWKLES,with Messrs.Harvey MERIWETHER and Edgar YEARGIN. A B PICKETT--the able and distinguished editor of the Memphis Scimitar,died at a Cincinnati Sanitarium last Monday morning. GEORGE PAYNE KILLED--Our townsman,George PAYNE,was instantly killed at the depot last Monday night by a passing train.It appears that Mr.PAYNE had come on the south-bound train from Paducah and stepped off on the wrong side,when a passing freight train,which had been switching,came on one of the double tracks and run over him.When found,his head was cut into on the track and one arm was severed.No one saw the frightful accident and he was discovered by the freight conductor who had backed his train to the fatal spot south of the depot.George PAYNE had been in business in Dyersburg many years and was held in high esteem.A little over a year ago,he married Miss Maud LOVE,who survives him,with an infant child.
