This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb by transcribed by Sarah Hutcherson =============================================================================== STATE GAZETTE DYERSBURG,TN 42ND YEAR NO 14 APRIL 4,1907 PIANO CONTEST CLOSES--Miss Nora VIRDEN of Finley,won the $400 Forbes piano with 120,915 votes; Miss Maud KEDZIE,with 86,330 votes won a gold watch; and Miss Maud PARISH with 63,005 votes won a handsome diamond and pearl broach,which was accepted by her sister,Miss Minnie PARISH.The State Gazette has added nearly 800 names since the contest started,and can now say it has the largest paid in advance circulation of any county weekley in the State.Counting the votes were Messers. Geo. T. WEAKLEY, Ernest BEAVER and Rube RAWLS. UNION WAREHOUSE:HALLS,TENN.--The date of the dedication of the new cotton warehouse built by some of the members of the Farmers' Educational and Co- Operative Union of America will be April 4th. Speakers will be: T.J. BROOKS, state secretary and treasurer; Homer L. HIGGS of Greenfield; J.E. MONTGOMERY,state president of the union; R.L. BARNETT,of Texas, R.W. WAGSTER and J.T. UPTON. LIGHT,a former resident of this place,but now a resident of Thorpe Springs,Texas is spending this week with relatives here. Miss Para PIERCE,of Dyersburg,was guest of Mrs.John GAULDIN. Miss Jessie COLLINS visited her sister,Mrs.J.B. BOGLE of Dyersburg this week. Trimble News; W.M. Mrs.Tom DAWSON,of Fort Dodge,Iowa,returned from Hot Springs Friday,she and little son,Emerson,leaving Sunday for an extended Western trip. Mrs.Green HAMILTON has returned to Covington.Mr.HAMILTON will also return home as soon as the Compress season is over. Last Thursday while playing ball with his son and other little boys,Ed BODEMAR lost a diamond stud valued at $350.A diligent search was made for the lost pin,but in vain.Mrs.Fannie PILLOW,who was born under a lucky star, tried her luck and found the diamond under a piece of paper. Messers.Harry CALCUT, Stoy DAWSON,Ruben SMITH, Brown WALKER and L.CORNILLAUD attended the dance in Fulton Tuesday night. Mrs.B.B. WATKINS is real sick at her residence in East Dyersburg. Miss Virginia WHITE,teacher in Halls school,spent Sunday with her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Crawford WHITE. Prof.Frank MARSHALL will be married at Halls Saturday,to Miss Hattie S. CAMPBELL,of St.Louis. J.L. DANIEL slipped on the grating in front of Dr.Nick WALKER's office several days ago and sustained painful injuries. STOKES--B.F. YOUNG has returned from St.Louis markets. T.W. YOUNG has returned from Arizonia and was in Stokes recently. Mr.&Mrs.J.B. MANLEY have both been quite sick at their home east of Stokes. J. GREEN and Miss Pearl WOODS of the Elizabeth neighborhood were married last Sunday week. J.EASON was sick last week being confined to his bed part of the week. J.H.PERRY has been carrying the mail for several days on account of sickness of Mr.PENNINGTON,the regular carrier. Little Minnie Lou SCREWS was quite sick a few days last week. NEWBERN--Misses Virginia and Mackie SHUMATE were recent visitors to Dyersburg. Allene PARKS,the little daughter of H.R. PARKS,is visiting the home of her cousins,Joe WYATT,of Halls. Willie JONES,of Mississippi,is in Newbern visiting relatives. ROUTE #5--There seems to be considerable sickness along Route #5; John DOSS is suffering from an acute attack of grip,is improving. Mrs.Clyde McADOO,who has been sick so long is reported better. Mr. McADOO has sold his beautiful place to John ARNOLD. Guy FUMBANKS,besides being a very busy man,holds the office of Road Commissioner of the 5th district. John Lane and Bro.RANKIN were in a runaway.In the wind-up the preacher fell on John,and as a result he is carrying his arm in a sling. The little son of Mr.& Mrs W.C.WATSON met with a sad accident,breaking his arm.A doctor from Newbern dressed the arm and the boy is doing nicely. Mr.FUMBANKS had two barns consumed by fire March 28.He lost three self-binders,rakes,mowers,corn crusher,cultivators,corn shredder and lots of other things,lost at $3000; $1,300 insurance. MRS.HODGE DIES AT TRIMBLE --Mrs.Charlie HODGE of Trimble,died at her home last Friday,aged 21 years.She was the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Tom TURNER.Mrs.Henry HODGE, Willie HODGE and Mrs.V.B. PIERCE is sick again.He has suffered a relapse. Hilliard FOWKLES is as fat and jovial as ever. D.l. SHAW,formerly off Route #2 Newbern,has completed his new house and moved on Route #5. Miss Maggie McADOO,of Hickman,Ky,is visiting her brother,Clyde McADOO. Charley BIXLER and wife are visiting his father, J.T. BIXLER. RESIDENCE BURNED--The residence of D.C. CAMERON was entirely destroyed by fire yesterday. Mr. CAMERON started a fire in the kitchen stove and after a few minutes later,discovered the ceiling on fire. Practically nothing was saved. LADIES MISSIONARY SOCIETY--The Missionary society of the Presbyterian Church held a meeting with Mrs. M.D. ROBBINS Tuesday afternoon.Interesting papers were read by Mrs.WELLS and Mrs.ROBBINS and an interesting informal talk by Rev.Geo.SCOTT on African missions. ARRESTED FOR ABDUCTION--Deputy Sheriff R.L. COLLINS arrived in Dyersburg Tuesday with Jim VENABLE,whom he arrested at Huntington,charged with abduction of Montie SAMPSON,the 14 year-old daughter of Mr.Jim SAMPSON.It is charged that VERNABLE,who is a married man,stole the girl from her home in Trimble Monday night and drove to Kenton and then boarded the train for Huntingdon.VERNABLE claims he took the girl to his sister's home in Huntingdon to prevent her from being sent to reform school. LENOX--Old Uncle Ryley PEAL,who has been suffering several days with la grippe,is able to be up again. Guss COLEMAN'S child came very near being burned to death last Thursday,while at the supper table.It reached up from it's mother's lap and pulled tea off,spilling the boiling hot tea upon it,burning it from head to foot.Mrs.COLEMAN also was burned very bad. Miss Bonnie HOUSE,of Dyersburg,is visiting Miss Clara GILLIS and her many other friends. Miss Clara GILLIS has just returned from a protracted visit to her uncle,Bud DANIELS at Dyersburg. Dr.WEEKLY has sold out here and moved to Newbern. CHURCH GROVE--Miss Hattie HENDERSON,of Sorrell's Chapel,was the guest of her neice, Mrs.Maude KING a few days last week. The Stork passed through quite recently,leaving Mr.& Mrs. Gwynne GREEN a bright baby boy. Lunn SORRELL, R.L. TARKINGTON,and Jim BAKER were delegates from Sorrell's Chapel Lodge to County Union that met here Saturday. STOKES--H. PENNINGTON has recovered from a recent spell of sickness sufficiantly to be able to be on duty again carrying the mail. A.R. BIGGS has been suffering with a sprained arm for several days. Jesse YOUNG is quite sick with pneumonia. Jesse GREEN and family,of Elizabeth,spent Saturday night with Newt GREENWAY's family. WEBB,of Paducah,was in the city Tuesday and paid his respects at the State Gazette.Capt.WEBB has the honor of being the longest continuous subscriber on out list,having taken the paper since 1865,the first year of its existance. ESCAPED PRISIONER--Boss COCHRAN,who was serving a sentence in county jail for holding up another negro last January,made his escape Saturday morning and has not been apprehended. He was working on the excavation for the annex of the Masonic building,the shackles were insecurely fastened and he slipped out of his bounds and escaped.George SIMPSON's bloodhound was on the trail and to the I C railroad where he is thought to caught a northbound train. NEWBERN NEWS--R.J.DICKEY left for Southern California the last of the week. He will there enter the real estate business. Misses Olive NOEL & Olive Mai LeSEUR visited relatives in Nashville. Mrs.Bessie BACCUS,who has been visiting the home of her father,P. GOODLOE,has returned to her home in Chicago. MissNannie BURROW,talented musician of Fulton,attended the Travelogue Friday. STEVE MAHON PASSED AWAY--As the result of an attack of pneumonia,City Recorder.S.W. MAHON died Sunday evening at his apartments in the Land's Company's Building,after an illness lasting only a few days.The deceased was born in Tennessee 51 years ago,and in his boyhood he came to California residing for a time at Modesto and for twenty years in Bakersfield.The deceased was a brother of Superior Judge J.W.MAHON,and Kirby S. Mahon,also Superior Judge of Sutter County.The interment will take place in Modesto in the family burial plot.Bakersfield,Calif.,April 1st. Mr.MAHON was the son of Rev.Jack MAHON,and was born and raised in Dyer County. He was a brother of Dr. R.H. MAHON,presiding elder Memphis District. He was a brother of Mrs.J.H. PURSELL,and an uncle of Mrs.J.W.PEDEN of this city, Mrs.W.T. POWELL,of RoEllen,and Joe,Gilbert,Robert,Perry and "Boss" PURSELL of this city. ANNIVERSARY DINNER--Col.Tom W. NEAL gave his annual family reunion dinner last Sunday.His little neice,Miss Jennie SIDWAY being the "honored guest," as she and "Uncle Tom' take turns to celebrate their birthday dinner together,both being April 11th.The dinner was served by Mrs.NEAL and her charming daughter,Miss Gerster. Jim GRIFFIN and Victor LAWTON spent Sunday in Obion. A negro named Bill CLARK was knocked down and badly hurt by an unknown white man near the Fairgrounds last Sunday. BATTLE WAGED OVER SHEEP.TRENTON,TENN.--Judith HUNTSMAN,the half-witted negress,who still insists on her right to raise sheep in the coty limits,had an encounter with the City Marshal last Saturday which created much mirth.Judith's herd of sheep now numbers nine.Since she was warned that she would be allowed to pasture but one in the city limits,she has been herding them outside of town.Yesterday,they strayed from their watchful shepherdess to the Court-house yard.The City Marshel spied the trespassers about the same time that Judith missed them and a battle royal ensued,the Marshel seeking to take the sheep to the city pound,the half-distracted woman pulling and tugging for their release.No one would assist the Marshel,the white people enjoyed the conflict,and the darkies not daring to lift a hand against the one whom they firmly believe is in league with the Evil One. Newt BRADLEY has completed his fence in front of his place,in addition to the dump he threw up at the mouth of the lane. Miss Ethel CRAFTON,who has been teaching school at Union Grove,has returned to her home near Lenox. CHESTNUT BLUFF--Miss Senath AVERY will teach the next term.She is a very good teacher. Miss Pauline AGEE happened to a very painful accident one day last week.She was driving a horse which became frightened and ran away.Miss AGEE jumped out of the buggy and struck her shoulder against a stump and sustained injuries that have kept her in bed several days. Thomas BROWDER was BURIED at Antioch graveyard last Friday.We sympathise with his bereaved relatives;a brother and two sisters. A large crowd gathered at Antioch Sunday afternoon to witness the unveiling of the James FISHER monument. SAMARIA--Miss Pearl BELL of Fowkles,is visiting her sister, Mrs.J.W. GOODWIN. James GILBERT,son of a wealthy tobacco man of Murray,Ky.,committed suicide aboard a train enroute from Memphis,by swallowing a half ounce of bromidia. Night riders in Carroll County destroyed nearly two miles of wire fencing belonging to prominent landowners. Luther WAGSTER,a prominent young farmer of near Eaton,Gibson County,was thrown from his wagons and both armes were broken by the wagon wheels passing over them. Four children of John HADDEN,of Fulton,Ky.,were burned to death in a fire that destroyed the family residence Sunday night.The mother was badly burned and HADDEN has been demeted by his loss.Several hundred dollars in paper money was also burned with the house. TOM JACKSON SHOT--Gordon PATTERSON,a young man of 21,shot and badly injured Tom JACKSON Saturday night,at his residence in Finley and left for Memphis Sunday morning,before he could be overtaken by officers.They had some words between them,while at Tom JACKSON's. PATTERSON went to a neighbor's house and took therefrom a double-barrelled shotgun.He went back to JACKSON's house,called him out and took a shot at him.The charge entered his shoulder and arm,inflicting a painful,but not dangerous wound. Sheriff DAWSON & Night Policeman KING,caught a negro,John SPANN,Saturday night,who is wanted at Mayfield,Ky.,for burglary.The Kentucky officers arrived today and took him back. COMING NUPTIALS--We are authorized to announce the approaching marriage of Miss Pauline DAWSON,of this city,to W.C. HOLT,of St.Louis,to take place Friday,May 3. Miss DAWSON is the daughter of Fred DAWSON,of Bogota and the neice of Sheriff C.C. DAWSON and Capt. I.H. DAWSON,of this city. She is the granddaughter of the late Capt.Bill DAWSON,of Confederate fame. Mr.HOLT is a traveling representative of a St.Louis shoe concern,and has been with the same firm 15 years.They will make their home in St.Louis. FUGITIVE CAPTURED--Green BEAVER,a negro under indictment for assault and battery with intent to kill,and a fugitive from justice for the past two years,is now safely lodged in the Dyer county jail. BEAVER stabbed another negro,John WILKES at Stokes two years ago,and has been hiding in Indiana and Illinois since.Deputy Sheriff WILLIAMSON,learning that BEAVER's father had moved to Trenton,notified the sheriff of Gibson County to be on the lookout for BEAVER. He was captured at the Trenton depot.He will be tried at the June Term of Court on the old indictment.
