This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Sarah Hutcherson sukey@bellsouth.net ==================================================================== STATE GAZETTE 42nd YEAR No.6 DYERSBURG,TN FEBRUARY 7,1907 SIX NEGROES DROWN--A skiff containing eight negroes was upset in the Forked Deer River near Tigar Tail last Wednesday at noon and six drowned.The gasoline launch Irene,belonging to Capt.L.C.WARNER,of Pewmon,Mich.,with Capt.WARNER and O.C.FOULE in charge was making a trip down the river and when four miles east of Tiger Tail,the officers of the boat were hailed by two negroes,who were clinging to a capsized skiff.The boat took the two men on board.The negroes,Earl YOUNG and Mose LAWSON,with the six who were drowned,were employed at the Tiger Tail mill.The mill had shut down on account of high water and the men were on their way to Key Corner,where they were to go overland to Halls,the home of all of the men.The negroes stated that their boat was capsized by the waves of the Clyde,which passed them before the accident.The officers of the Clyde state that when they passed out of sight of the skiff,it was still safe. LOCALS--Mr.& Mrs.Henry HOSIE,from Tiger Tail,were in the city Friday,en route to Indiana,where they will remain for a few weeks. Officer J.P.KING,of Newbern,paid this office a pleasant call Monday. Misses Daisy & Cano FERGUSON left Memphis yesterday for Ardmore,I.T.,to visit their sister,Mrs.C.E.SHACKELFORD. Capt.& Mrs.J.M.BRACKIN and daughter,Miss Louise,leave today for Tampa,Fla.,for an extended visit. G.B.DelVECCHIO and W.W.LAUDERDALE attended the performance of the Clansman at Memphis Friday afternoon. J.E.CRITCHLOW,formerly an employee of the Forked Deer Milling Co.,but for the past three years a resident of Memphis,committed suicide at Wynne,Ark.,last Saturday. Ben OSBURN,who for the past two years has been in the west,returned to Dyersburg on a visit Saturday. Mrs.George SCOTT is visiting her daughter,Mrs.Raphael BRYAN,in Memphis. Dr.Smith PARKS,died at his home in Glass,Obion County,last Friday night.Dr.PARKS had been a resident of Obion County for nearly 50 years.He was well known in this county. M.E.MAGEE returned last Friday from Nashville,where he was representative to the Masonic Grand Lodge. Little Dane,the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.B.M.GREEN,is quite sick with the fever. Maj.W.L.SMITH,General Agent of the ICR,was in the city on business Saturday.Maj.SMITH is the Southern representative of President HARRIHAN and is working hand and hand with him in developing the Southern interest to Illinois Central. ED GILMAN DEAD--Ed GILMAN died of consumption at the home of his sister,Mrs.H.B.RIKE last Saturday.Mr.GILMAN was the son of Mr.& Mrs.C.P.GILMAN,of Cherokee,this county.He spent a few months in Arizonia last year and returned home not improved in health.Mr.GILMAN was a valued employee of the Colgate Soap Co.,in the capacity of traveling salesman.He was 27 years old.The funeral services were conducted by Rev.Geo.H.CRUTCHER at the residence of Mr.RIKE Sunday afternoon.His remains were interred in the City cemetery. DEATH CLAIMS J.D.McCLERKIN--After a lingering illness of some months,James D.McCLERKIN died in Memphis at the home of his daughter,Mrs.Guy MOORE,last Saturday evening.He had been a resident of Dyersburg many years.He was several years in the drug business in the farm of Hayes & McCLERKIN.He afterward entered the employ of Stevens Lumber Co.,being manager of their store.Messrs.SCOTT and KING made him mamager of the Hotel Virginia,which he held until failing health compelled him to retire from active work.He left for Memphis several months ago,for special treatment,but medical skill could not save him.Mr.McCLERKIN was twice married,his first wife being Miss Annie HILL,and his second wife,who survives him,Mrs.Dink ROBERTS,to whom he was married about three years ago.He leaves a wife,and two daughters,Mrs.Eugene SCOTT and Mrs.Guy MOORE.A brother,Tom McCLERKIN lives in Blytheville,Ark.The funeral service was conducted at the home of Geo.T.WEAKLEY,by Rev.A.J.MEADERS last Monday.The remains were interred in the City cemetery. FOWKLES--Lewis KING and family started for New Mexico for his health,but returned on account of high water. John CARTER,of Carroll county,came here Friday to attend the bedside of his father,A.A.CARTER. After a short attack of pneumonia,A.A.CARTER died Sunday morning.His remains were carried to Huntingdon for interment.Mr.CARTER only lacked a month of being 80 years old,had been 50 years married and has been a member of the Methodist Church 39 years.He leaves a wife a few years his junior,two sons and a daughter to mourn his loss. NEWBERN--Miss Bertha HOLLADAY of Halls High School visited her sister,Miss HOLLADAY,the business teacher at the Newbern High School the weekend. Mrs.Thompson,mother of Emerson PARKS,of Trimble,has removed there to live at his home. The people of Newbern regret to lose Mr.BANDY from our midst.He has been with the Newbern Drug Co.for sometime.He will move with his family to Trenton. The Newbern Drug Co.has secured B.F.CRANE,of Tullahoma to act as prescriptianest. Mrs.Lula COZART's little son,Garrett,is quite ill with pneumonia. Miss HANSON of MISSISSIPPI,is visiting her sister,Mrs.J.S.RADFORD. Allene,the little daughter of B.R.PARKS,who was taken by her parents to Nashville for an operation is reported much better. Park TIGRETT,W.M.SHIBLEY,Dr.E.R.WYATT and other relatives attended the funeral and burial of Dr.J.L.S.PARKS at Obion.Dr.PARKS was seventy years of age.He was the father of Lexie PARKS of Union City.He formerly lived at Newbern.Dr.PARKS was the son of the pioneer Cumberland Presbyterian preacher of this district,the Rev.Hamilton PARKS.Rev.Joe McLESKY of Newbern,conducted the funeral services,assisted by Rev.PRITCHARD of Newbern. The family of J.S.LOCKART moved to Jackson last week. Miss Linnie ATKINS,daughter of our esteemed townsman,Asa A.ATKINS,and J.W.BURKS,of Helena,Ark.,were married at the ATKINS home on Monroe Street last Thursday evening.Miss Ollie NOEL played the wedding march.Rev.Joe McCLERKY joined the two happy hearts.They left immediately for New Orleans.They will live in Helena. MAXEY--Mr.DAVIS and Sharp JOHNSON are the only sick ones in the neighborhood. Henderson JOHNSON went to Trenton on business. Everette JOHNSON was in Dyersburg one day last week. Misses Ethel & Dollie COBB visited in Maxey Wednesday. John TARRANT is a little under the weather now. Sharp JOHNSON sold a mule in Newbern Saturday for $200. Miss Willie ROGERS is also very sick. Mr.BAKER & family,of Mt.Vernon,have moved to Weakley county. Joe GILMAN and family of Finley,have moved back to the 13th district. Aunt Lu BRADLEY is visiting her daughter,Mrs.Willie CHAMBERS. Miss Ethy MEADERS was the guest of the Misses MANUELs last week. The community was very much greived to hear of the death of Eddie GILMAN.He had been suffering from consumption for some time and died at his sister's home.He was loved by all who knew him. BAND MILLS--Henry FIELDS,one of the young men working for the Mengle Box Co.,in the timber business,was seriously hurt last week by a falling limb,but is improving. John GLIDWELL and John PICKARD died at the hotel this week.The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the community. MILLERS CHAPEL--W.T.WATHER has sold seven mules for $1,260. T.N.PRIVOTT sold three mules for $515,last Tuesday. H.WOODS has bought a complete cotton gin and sawmill outfit and will have it in operation by proper season. Emmett CLARK is having a tussell with the fever. LENOX--W.T.SLAYTON,wife and little daughter have been very sick for several days. Bud LUMLEYS is reported to be very sick. Abner ELLIS is getting well,after a hard case of pneumonia. ***************************************************************************** *************************** ***************************************************************************** *************************** STATE GAZETTE DYERSBURG,TENNESSEE 42ND YEAR--NO.8 FEBRUARY 21,1907 MRS.W.H.TUCKER--Mrs.W.H.TUCKER,wife of Dr.W.H.TUCKER,Jr.,of Double Bridges,died at her home last Sunday,aged 43 years.Her remains were brought to Dyersburg and interred in the City Cemetery Tuesday.Rev.J.T.UPTON,her pastor,assisted by Dr.CRUTCHER,conducting the service.Mrs.TUCKER was Miss Sadie LOVE,born at Seymour,Indiana and was married to Dr.TUCKER at Kenton,Tenn.,Dec.19,1888.Double Bridges has been the home of Dr.& Mrs.TUCKER since their marriage.Dr.TUCKER is the son of Dr.W.H.TUCKER of this city and is the president of the Bank of Halls.One child,a boy,blessed the marriage,but he died when four years old. DEATH OF CHAS.MEYER--Chas.MEYER,better known as "Dutch Charley" passed away at 4 a.m.Sunday.Charley was attacked with pneumonia about three weeks ago and was not strong enough to overcome the disease.He had been a sufferer for 15 years and was almost a helpless cripple for the past 5 years,and his death came as a relief from many years of pain.He had,in spite of his condition,earned a good livelihood at his trade and leaves an estate valued at more than a thousand dollard,consisting of money at local banks and real estate mortgage.Charley was born at Breslau,Germany,about 55 years ago.He was a gallant soldier of the Franco-Prussian war and was wounded three times during the war.He afterward served in the German army in West Africa.After enlistment ended,he was a gold prospector in South America,again a soldier for the German Empire in Northern India.He came to this country about 20 years ago,after an unhappy marriage.He leaves a sister,neice and nephew back in Germany.He was buried in the City Cemetery Sunday,Rev.A.J.MEADERS conducting the services at the residence of V.B.EASLEY,a friend. DR.FEIST FOUND GUILTY,CONVICTED of the MURDER of MRS.ROSA MANGRUM in DEC.1905.NASHVILLE,TENN.,FEB.16.--"Guilty of Murder in the first degree," was the verdict of the jury this morning against Dr.J.Herman FEIST,charged with the murder of Mrs.Rosa MANGRUN. Dr.FEIST's hands trembled,but he gave no other show of breaking down.Jeers of a big crowd,"Hang him,lynch him." His attorneys notified the court of a motion of a new trial,if denied will be made to the Supreme Court.Dr.FEIST was convicted on circumstantial evidence,it being never shown how the woman came to her death,prussic acid being the theory of the State.She was a patient of Dr.FEIST and,was infatuated with him.She arranged to pay a visit to Chicago,and left home alone on the night of Dec.14,1905,to take a train.The first intimation received by the Nashville public came from St.Louis,where her sister,Mrs.Logan TROUSDALE,went to make a search for her.On Jan.25,her body was found floating in the Ohio river near Cairo;the supporter of the stocking in which she was supposed to have carried $1,400 cut,the stocking drawn down and the money missing as well as $1,200 worth of jewelry.Some days after the disappearance,FEIST deposited $500 in the bank,which was rather unusual.Mrs.TROUSDALE testified that going to FEIST and demanding information about her sister,he became very agitated and finally told her that she was suffering with a disease and had gone away to be cured.FEIST did not take the stand. Albert BECKETT received the sad news Monday that his sister,Mrs.HARRIS,of Dyersburg,being dangerously ill and not expected to live many days. ***************************************************************************** ************************************* ***************************************************************************** ************************************* STATE GAZETTE DYERSBURG,TENNESSEE 42ND YEAR--NO.9 FEBRUARY 28,1907 DEATH OF JOHN McGINNIS--John M.McGINNIS,who had lived in Dyersburg nearly all his life,died at his home here last Thursday morning,after an illness of six days,aged 65 years. He leaves a wife,one of the noblest of women,and seven children;four daughters and three sons to mourn his loss. Mr.McGINNIS had been actively engaged in business in Dyersburg since the war.He was for a long time an official member of the Methodist Church and at the time of his death,was a member of good standing of the Masonic fraternity.He was a true and loyal Confederate soldier and a member of Dawson Bivouac.Rev.A.J.MEADERS conducted the funeral services at the residence,which were conducted at the grave by the Masonic fraternity. TRIBUTE OF RESPECT--Sorrow comes to us all and we are truly sorry to report the death of our beloved brother,Frank WARD,son of J.E.WARD,who lives on the old FERGUSON place.Brother Frank was only a youth of 17 summers and was a truthful,honest and industrious young man,and respected and loved by all who knew him,and was a member in good standing of North Local No.74;Farmers Union.Therefore,we the members of North Local No.74,beg to tender our sympathies to his family in their bereavement.We desire to comfort them in their sorrow,for their loss is our loss,also let us all hope to meet again in the sweet beyond where sorrow never comes and heartaches are no more.The body was laid to rest in the Ferguson cemetery and the funeral was well attended by friends and neighbors and nearly every member of the North Local.Thus "in the midst of life,we are in the midst of death." SQUIRE SUMMIT'S BARN BURNED--The large barn of Squire J.T.SUMMIT at Bruceville was destroyed by fire Friday morning at day light.About three hundred bushels of corn,a quantity of hay,two valuable mules,wagon and buggy and tools were destroyed.Squire SUMMIT was aroused in time to save one horse and colt.The fire is supposed to have been of incendiary orgin.Loss was $2,000,no insurance. BARN BURNED--Mr.R.M.RAINEY's large barn in West Newbern,was destroyed by fire Sunday night.Mr.RAINEY's loss is estimated about $600,no insurance.Mr.Will PARKS had about $200 worth of hay and corn stored in the barn,destroyed by the flame.Mr.PARKS reached the barn in time to save his four mules,a log wagon and a few other things.Origin of fire is unknown.Newbern Tennesseean. NINE BIRTHDAY AND 43 YEARS OLD.MILLERSBURG,KY.--J.H.BISHOP,who was born and reared at this place,but who now resides in Lexington,is perhaps the only man in Kentucky,who is 43 years old and celebrated only nine birthdays. DEAF MUTES WED.MEMPHIS,TENN.--In the presence of 200 guests,fifty of whom were deaf mutes,an unique ceremony was performed last week at the Annie Brinkley Home,which united in matrimony,Miss Bessie Carl VOLKMAN and Edward Lee FIELDS,members of the Memphis Deaf Mute Association.The ceremony was performed by the Rev.J.W.MICHAELS,of Little Rock,a deaf mute himself,who performed the ceremony in the silent language.This was the first public marriage to take place between members of the Association since its organization six years ago,and unusual interest was aroused by its announcement,and many guests witnessed for the first time such a ceremont. MAJOR W.L.SMITH DROWNED.MEMPHIS,TENN.FEB.22--Major W.L.SMITH,one of the most widely known railroad men in the South and his son,McClellan,aged 13 years,were drowned today in Menaska Lake,Arkansas.Mr.SMITH,who was a member of the Menaska Hunting Club,went there with his son yesterday for a duck hunt of a few days.This morning the two,with a negro paddler,entered a skiff,and in some manner the craft was overturned and the three were thrown into deep water.They made a desperate effort to reach shore,but the heavy clothing worn by Mr.SMITH and his son was too much and they were drowned.The negro servant escaped.The bodies were recovered and will be brought to Memphis for burial. CHESTNUT BLUFF--Daisy SMITH,"Blind Daisy," as she was called,died last Friday with congestion.She was sick only a few hours.She was a good Christian and a member of the Lebanon Methodist Church. John RICHARDSON will run his wagon again this year.We are always glad to see John,as he buys all our chickens and eggs and pays us the money at our gate. Misses JONES and AVERY paid Halls a visit Saturday and were thrown out of their buggy,but escaped unhurt. IN THE DEATH--of Major W.L.SMITH,the Illinois Central Rail Road loses an excellant official and the South,a good friend. IN MEMORIUM--John Mathis McGINNIS was born in the year 1838,November 15th,in Dyer County,near Newbern; was married to Miss Caroline DAUGHTY in 1870,made a Mason the same year and had been a member of the Methodist Church for thirty years.He died Februsry 21,1907,survived by a wife,four daughters and three sons.In the death of John Mathis McGINNIS,his family,church.lodge,and community a large loss.Kind,affectionate and thoughtful in his home,charitable,patient and true to his fraternal brothers,honest,conscientious and reliable in all his private relations with all mankind.He was a gallant and brave Confederate so for four long years.Although his life was not a financial success,in a marked degree,he laid up treasures more enduring in the high esteem of his friends,the memory of his loved ones.In view of the life he lived and our knowledge of his noble qualities;be it resolved: That in his death,this Lodge loses a valuable member and brother indeed,but we bow submissively,recognizing that our temporary loss is his eternal gain,and we will cherish his memory here,commend his spirit to God, who gave it and consign his body to earth with the consoling thought that he consistently practiced the principles of Masonry,which he tought and loved his neighbor as himself. DEATH OF TOM VIAR;SPECIAL FROM FOWKLES CORRESPONDENT--Tom VIAR died at his home in Fowkles Monday night at 9:30,aged 55 years and 9 months.He leaves a wife,five sons and a number of grandchildren,to mourn his loss.In his death,the wife loses a beloved companion,the children a kind and loving father,and all humanity,a friend.After a short and appropriate service by Rev.HARRISON,the remains were laid to rest at Holly Springs cemetery. HORSE THIEF NABBED--Officer John WILLIAMSON made a catch of a horse thief Sunday.Allen WHEELER stole two mules last Thursday night,one from the barn of Joe RIGG and one from Bill NELSON's barn at Blue Grass.WILLIAMSON at once started a search for the man and the stolen animals.He was traced through the county all week,to his home in District #2 Sunday,where he was arrested by the constable acting on Mr.WILLIAMSON's orders.He told the officers where the animals could be found. RICHARDS' RESIDENCE BURNED--The residence of J.A.RICHARDS was completely destroyed by fire Friday morning at 4 a.m.The family discovered the fire just in time to escape and hadn't time to save even their clothing.The loss was complete including out houses and fences.The house and contents were insured for $1,900 with L.W.TUCKER and the loss has been adjusted. DEATH OF MRS.ANNIE JACKSON--The beloved wife of A.G.JACKSON,died at her home one mile west of Dyersburg on February 23rd after several weeks illness.The deceased was 46 years,1 month and 26 days old.She lived a consistant Christian life and was a member of the Baptist church 29 years.By her death,the community loses one of its finest christian ladies,and in the home is left a vacant place that can never be filled.She leaves a husband,two sons and two brothers and a host of friends to mourn her lass.The funeral services was conducted by Rev.J.T.BARKER and the remains interred at McCullough's Chapel the following Monday. LENOX--We note that "Elijah" spoke of Mrs.Tennie STYERS being in town shopping the other day.I never saw Mrs.Tennie,but I certainly saw her daughter,Miss Clara. NEWBERN--Miss NEAL of Chicago,a neice of Miss Olive NEAL,of the Newbern school,left Tuesday after a short visit. Miss Mabel SWINDLER is home with her parents.B.R.PARKS is at home,after being for several days with his little daughter,Allene,in Nashville.Allene is much improved in health. Mr.COOK and son,of near Newbern,will go to New Mexico land prospecting soon. Robert DRANE sold his city bakery and grocery store to Mr.STANLEY,who will continue the business here.
