Officers are: N.W.CALCUTT,President; Tom W.NEAL,Vice-President;I.Newt BUNNELL, Chamblin SIMPSON,Cashier,with W.C.REED as assistant cashier.The Directors are: N.W.CALCUTT,Tom W.NEAL, I.N.BUNNELL,Chamblin SIMPSON,J.M.BRACKIN,James W.BAKER,A.Pete FORD,L.M.MICHELL,E.L.CUTLER,A.J.MOORE,E.F.DAVIS and Mit WHITSON.All men are identified with interests of Dyer Co.The capital stock is $200,000. W.H.ANDERSON DEAD--W.H.ANDERSON,known as "Tip" ANDERSON,died at Tiptonville Sunday.His remains were brought to Dyersburg on the boat and transferred to an Illinois Central train,the burial taking place at Troy.His remains were accompanied by his sons,Powsey and Andy ANDERSON,his daughter,Mrs.W.C.PEACOCK,and a host of friends.The Masons and many Confederate soldiers met the party at the boat and accompanied the remains to the train.Mr.ANDERSON was an old Confederate soldier and the comrade of some of Dyer County's veterans.The sons of Tip ANDERSON request us to thank the Masons and old Confederate soldiers for kindness shown them while in Dyersburg on their sad mission. NEGRO HOLDUP--Geo.JOHNSON,Bliss OLDHAM and Boss COCHRAN,all negroes,are in county jail.They held up Tom FOWKLES,another negro,near the depot Sunday night and took his revolver and three dollars in money.They were traced to Obion,where they were arrested Monday. MRS.ROSA CLARK--Mrs.Rosa CLARK died of pneumonia at her residence Saturday morning at 2 o'clock after a brief illness.Mrs.CLARK came to Dyersburg five years ago from Union City and has made many friends here who were shocked at her death.Mrs.CLARK,while not a member of any church,was a christian at heart and attended the Baptist church.Her remains were taken to Paducah,KY,her old home for burial.She leaves two sons and two daughters. JOHNSTON & EASLEY--Miss Ava EASLEY was married at Greenwood,Miss.,Saturday night to Mr.Preston JOHNSTON,of Memphis.Mrs.JOHNSTON is the daughter of Mrs.M.V.EASLEY,of this city and has been employed as operator for the Cumberland Telephone Company at Greenwood for sometime past.Mr.JOHNSTON is a traveling salesman for the America Tobacco Company,with headquarters at Clarksdale,Miss.The newly married couple will reside in Clarksdale. NOTICE--All parties having claims against the late Mrs.Rosa CLARK will present same to me. P.E.PICKENS. MRS.LIZZIE SARAH TODD--Mrs.TODD died at her home Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock,after a lingering illness of several months.Mrs.TODD was born in Newport,KY,69 years ago and has been a resident of Dyersburg for 34 years.She leaves a sister,Mrs.Jno.W.HENRY; two sons, Moss and Chas.,and 11 grandchildren to mourn her loss.She was a faithful member of the Christian church.Her remains were interred in City Cemetery yesterday,funeral services conducted by Rev.G.A.REYNOLDS,her pastor. Mrs.HALL,of Havana,Cuba,is visiting her brother,Dr.A.H.MOODY,at Trinity. Dr.J.L.HUEY has located at Heloise,coming here from Memphis.We welcome him back to Dyer County. NEWBERN--Mrs.B.R.PARKS and little daughter,Allene,have returned home,after being in Nashville several weeks on account of Allene's health.After an operation,Allene's health is completely restored. Dr.V.MOORE.who practised dentistery here for more than a year left Monday to reside at Troy.Mrs.MOORE and Dr.MOORE's mother will remove with Dr.MOORE to Troy to reside. Mr.& Mrs.Milton FARMER,nee Miss Nina TROY,visited relatives here last week,before continuing their honeymoon south to Birmingham and to Pensacola,where they will reside. STOKES--J.H.BESSENT has bought the T.J.BIGGS place and expects to move to it about April 1st. Little Mary BEAVER,daughter of Esquire R.S.BEAVER is reported recoving from a serious illness. Allen WHEELER,who lived at Tillman's mill in this district,was taken to jail last week by W.B.RALPH & J.H.GREEN,special officers.He had carried off some mules belonging to parties living near Blue Grass. Rev.J.B.HILL visited his father,J.H.HILL and family last weekend. Since our last report,the death angel has visited the home of C.T.GREEN,and taken his beloved companion.She was sick only a few days.Her husband and five little children are left to mourn her untimely death. END MARCH 7,1907 ISSUE. ********************************************************** STATE GAZETTE DYERSBURG,TN 42ND YEAR NO.11 MARCH 14,1907 UNION REVIVAL BEGINS--Dr.George H.CRUTCHER opens the initial service with a talk on prayer.The choir,composed of some forty voices rendered a pleasing musical program.S.Granger LATTA,the leader,and the members of the choir deserve much praise.Mrs.R.L.McKNIGHT,as accompanist,is assisting Mr.LATTA.A feature of the music is Mr.J.E.EBERSOLE on the claionet.The next union service will be held at the same church,the 24th,Rev.George P.SCOTT delivering the sermon. DAY AND NIGHT BANK FOR DYERSBURG--The Savings Department of the Mercantile Bank & Trust Company will be open every Saturday evening from 5:30 to 8 o'clock.They are the originators of the Savings Department in Dyersburg and are also the first bank to offer to pay interest on savings deposits. Miss Eloise Emma,the charming daughter of "Wild Bill" EVANS,is to be married tonight in Dallas,TX,to Alexander CASON. Since our last communcation,the death angel soaring on its peaceful wings has visited our community to take away Mrs.Marguerit REASON.Mrs.REASON had been confined to her bed for seven weeks,when on Wednesday,March 6th,she departed this life to take up her abode with the sainted angels.She has left this world of suffering and sorrow of trials and tribulations,and gone to live in Paradise,where all is peace and love and there will be no dying there.She leaves a husband,two sons and two daughters to mourn her loss.Rev.O.L.MARTIN conducted the funeral services at Pleasant Hill Thursday at 10 a.m.,after which the remains were laid to rest in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. FINLEY--Mrs.E.E.HALL,of Havana,Cuba;Miss Lula TIPTON,and John MOODY,visited Dr.& Mrs.MOODY last week. Mr.& Mrs.F.E.JONES returned home from their visit to Martin. Tobe FULGHUM capyured Lee POWER.an escaped prisoner from Lewisburg,TN here on last Thursday and delivered him safely to the sheriff at Nashville. Dr.E.R.WYATT has been in Nashville during the week in the interest of legislation to raise requirements for Dental practice in the State. Will VINCENT and wife are at home after visiting Memphis. The New Mexico land fever is spreading,a number of Newbern people will leave here next Tuesday to secure claims.Robert DRANE and Hardee WYATT were the pioneers from here.Mr.COOK and son of near here went out.They seemed well pleased from their reports. Mrs.Mary WALDRON,after spending the winter in the Bermuda Islands,returned home last week. END MARCH 14,1907 ISSUE *********************************************************** STATE GAZETTE DYERSBURG,TN 42ND YEAR NO.12 MARCH 21,1907 DEATH OF W.L.FOWKLES--W.L.FOWKLES died at his home in this place last Sunday afternoon,aged 49 years.He was attacked by pneumonia a week ago and notwithstanding the fact he was a strong man physicially,he soon succumbed to that dread disease."Will Doc," as everyone loved to call him,was the son of Capt.H.L.and M.A.FOWKLES.He was twice elected to the office of Trustee of Dyer County and at the time of his death held the office of tax assessor of this,the 4th civil district,and was also a member of the city school board.After his term as Trustee expired,he engaged in the grocery business with his brother-in-law,Jas.A.NORTON,under the firm name of NORTON & FOWKLES.Some 25 years ago,he was happily married to Miss Bertle FERGUSON,daughter of A.G.FERGUSON.In this union quite a large family was raised,Ernest,his oldest son,being his only married child.He was the soul of honor and a friend to almost everyone,with a sunny disposition and a kind word for all,it was a pleasure to be in his company.He was a kind and affectionate husband and father,and many a silent tear fell upon his grave last Monday afternoon when he was laid to rest in our pretty cemetery,there to await the Resurrection morn.He was a member of the Cumberland Church,Dr.R.H.MAHON,of Memphis,a friend of the deceased,conducted the funeral service. HOTEL CHANGE--The Hotel Stevens,which has been run under lease by H.A.MERIWETHER and managed by Jeff VAUGHN,has been secured by the Misses ENOCHS,formerly owners of the hotel at Kenton.The ladies made a success of the Kenton Hotel,which was recently destroyed by fire.The new management went into effect last night. MISS EXOM,of Covington was in the city Monday,the guest of Mr.& Mrs.Green HAMILTON. Mrs.Will MOSS is very sick. Hon.Jos.E.JONES returned Wednesday morning from Tiptonville,where he held court. THURSDAY,MARCH 21,1907--Mrs.Chas.VERNON,of Nashville,is the guest of Mrs.John NICHOLS. Miss Mary ROGERS,of Newbern,spent several days with Miss Aileen NICHOLS this week. Miss Lee OLDHAM,of Orysa,Tenn was the guest of Miss Lizzie TENNEY last week. Miss Janie COOVER leaves to-day to spend several days with Miss Kate COOVER,who is attending Potter College in Bowling Green,Ky. Mrs.John TARRANT entertained a few friends Wednesday afternoon in honor of Mrs.GENNETT,who is visiting Mrs.Milton MAGEE. There has been no improvement in the condition of Dr.W.A.FOWKLES this week. Miss Maud PARISH,who has been in Nashville for the past few weeks,will return home next week. J.E. EBERSOLE and C.E. HICKS went to Martin last Thursday and assisted the Union City Band in giving a concert. G.W. HELM,formerly a citizen of our city,now a resident of Caruthersville,was in this city Monday representing D.Canale & Co.,of Memphis. Prof.Marshall,the well-known Chiropodist,or corn doctor,is at Hotel Easley.He expects to locate permanently The heads and antlers of the two large elks killed by Messrs.W.S. DRAPER & Ernest RICE in Montana last fall are attracting much attention in the show windows of the Forked Deer Hardware Company.The rifle that did the work and sold by this Company is on display too. JOHN PIERCE--John PIERCE,after a short illness of pneumonia,died at his home in this city Monday night at 11 o'clock. He was 55 years of age at the time of his death,and had been a resident of this city only a few months.He was born near RoEllen and lived in that neighborhood all his life until his removal here.He was a man of fine character and liked by all who knew him.Mr.PIERCE was a nephew of the late John SAWYER and was left a fine estate by his uncle.His remains were interred at Rehobeth Tuesday. Miss Cora McGUIRE,of Nanvoo,is visiting her uncle,Sid HENDERSON and family,of Dyersburg. Mrs.James PAYNE is convalcing from an attack of bilious fever. Whitman PORCH,who recently graduated from the Dickson Normal Institute,has accepted a position with the Southern Railway Company at Florence,Ala.Whitman is the eldest son of Mr.& Mrs.H.D. PORCH of Ozment Coleman TUCKER,of Memphis,who has been visiting relatives here,has returned home Monday night accompanied by his brother,Newt. J.E. McKEE has returned from Columbia,where he has been to attend the bedside of his mother,who was dangerously ill,but has improved. Miss L.V. BLEDSOE,who has been dangerously ill with typhoid fever,at the home of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.L. COOK,is still very low with little prospects of recovery. Forest McNAUGHTON left Price's Mill several months ago,and went to Memphis,where he accepted the position of car inspector for a railway company.He has already been given an increase in salary. FOWKLES--DEWESE and HUFFMAN are talking of putting in an outfit on the Forked Deer River to saw crossties. Hart JOHNSON has moved out on Lewis KING's place and is going to farm this year. Mr.PETTY,who has been living near the mill,has occupied Mrs.VIA's homeplace.We are glad to have Pink SANDERS with us again.Mr.SANDERS was formerly of this place and moved away to follow the railroad. Harve WELCH has just completed a neat cottage in the northern portion of town and has added his family to the population of the city. Mr.McGEE,of Millington,was a guest of Miss Jeffie FITZHUGH Saturday.
