JIM ARNOLD HURT--Jim ARNOLD,whi is on the night switching crew of the Illinois Central, met with a painful accident Monday night.While under the engine cleaning out the fire box, another engine backed a car against his engine,which caught his leg at the knee cap and mashed it severely. TERSE TELEGRAMS--George BANKS,the recently appointed negro rural route carrier out of Springfield,has sent in his resignation. All white people on his route took down their boxes rather than receive mail from him. A 13-year-old boy robbed Jackson,Tenn.,express office and gets away with $1000,was captured in Humboldt. SUPREME COURT--Mengel Box Company vs L.M. MICHELL et al.,Dyer Chancery.This is a suit by S.G. LATTA to eject the Mengel Box Company from 500 acres of land in a purchase of 4,000 acres of land from R.I. CHESTER,deceased,in Dyer County.The chancellor decreed in favor S.G. LATTA to evict the box company,and that the box company was entitled to recover from the executors of the estate with interest. Affirmed. J.H. DuBOSE,administrator,et al vs United States Fire Insurance Company of New York,Dyer Law. The suit was for recovery of a policy of $1,800 on property which has been sold to the Bonicord Gin Company. There was a claim of double insurance on account of another policy which the gin had collected by compromise for $1,025, taken out before the deed at been given them on the property. This could not vitate the validity of the prior policy of $1,800,as the other policy was settled probably to avoid litigation. Affirmed. C.F. CRAIG,administrator vs Illinois Central Railroad Company,Obion Law. This suit brought by C.F. CRAIG,admin.,father of little Minnie CRAIG,who was killed by a train.In the lower court a verdict was given for $1,800. Reversed for errors in submission of testimony in the court below,a scientific book which was contradictory of the evidence of the engineer as to a space in which the train could have been stopped. It was not admissable over the objection of the defendant's counsel.There were other errors. Dr.LEWIS HARRISON--When the dreaded reaper carried away on Friday morning,the soul of Dr. Lewis HARRISON,another of Dyersburg's most highly esteemed and beloved citizens was removed from our midst.Dr.HARRISON was born in London,England,in 1851 and came to America with his parents when he was 8-years-old. Before coming to this city,he was in business in Memphis.He there married Miss Evelyn HARRIS, a neice of the late Senator HARRIS. She died ten years ago. He came to Dyersburg in 1882. He has been a successful business man and leaves a valuable estate. He was Vice-President of the First National Bank of this city. he has valuable real estate holdings in Memphis. He leaves six children,Mrs.Wallace MOORE, Miss Clintie HARRISON,Will HARRISON, Jim HARRISON, Eugene HARRISON and Julian HARRISON. The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church Saturday morning,conducted by Rev. Oscar LINDSTROM,of Covington,and Rev. Sid HARRIS,of Humboldt.The remains were interred in the city cemetery beside the grave of his beloved one. THURSDAY MAY 2,1907--Mr.& Mrs.Chas. G. WATKINS have returned from Dawson Springs. Dr.& Mrs.Frank SUMMERS are at Dawson Springs. Mrs.Heber JOHNSTON is in the city this week,the guest of her parents. Capt. B.C. BURGIE,wife and daughter have returned from three months trip to Southern California. Jeff VAUGHN,now located at Dawson,Ky.,and connected with the Hotel Arcadia,of that city,was here last week attending the meeting of the Tri-County Association of Odd Fellows,of which he was president. Roe ROACH,of Fowkles,a brakeman of Dyersburg Northern R.R.,met with an accident,whilw switching at Ridgely. He got his right foot caught in the brake of the car and so badly mashed it that it was amputated above the ankle. John HART sold his newsstand Tuesday to Theo. FRAZIER and will leave in a few days for Jackson,Tenn.,to engage in the same line of business. Miss Martha BYARS who has been the guest for the past two weeks of Mrs.Henry LLOYD, left for Friars Point Tuesday for a few days stay before returning to her home in Elkton,Ky. Dr.A.F. COOPER has moved to Tiger Tail and will have his office with the Tiger Tail Milling Company. Mr.& Mrs.Ivey SKYLES are rejoicing over the advent of a new daughter. J.T. GARRETT has sold his mail route to Joe LAMBERT. Mr.LAMBERT will try to serve the people of Booths Point and Heloise as faithfully as Mr.GARRETT did. Mrs.J.S. SCOTT and Mrs.John C. ROGERS left yesterday for Trenton,where they go as delegates to the Presbyterian Missionary Union. Fred TIGHE has resigned as chief clerk in the office of Dyersburg Northern Railroad to accept the position of chief clerk to Supt. H.M. McCOURT,of the Illinois Central Headquarters in Memphis. Sarah BELL,the 13-year-old daughter of Mrs.Rosa SWEARANGEN was thrown from a horse and her right arm was broken at the elbow. Mrs.Eva MARTIN,wife of W.T. MARTIN, died of pneumonia at her home near Mt.Pisgah last Sunday and her husband is dangerously ill at this time. Clarence NEELY,who has been ill six weeks is improving. MRS.J.Q.CRAIG--Mrs.J.Q. Craig died Monday at her home in Bells,after a lingering illness,surrounded by her family.Her remains were interred in the Mt.Zion Cemetery near Friendship Tuesday. She was 67 years old, a member of the Methodist Church at Bells and a life long christian.She leaves a husband and five children.She was the mother of Dr. J.R. CRAIG and Mrs.Mode J. HOWELL,of this city, Hon. W.W. CRAIG,of Ripley, Mrs.W.F. SUMMERS,of Memphis and Mrs.O.L. GRANT,of Bells. J.W. BURNEY HONORED--Prof. J.W. Burney,of this city,has been tendered the Presidency of Bethal at McKenzie. (Union City Commercial) UNION HILL--We are glad to know W.B. McBRIDE is able to be up again after his severe illness. Albert VINYARD was seriously wounded last Tuesday by being shot through the left leg with a Winchwester rifle by Tom TWILLA,of this place,who was hunting wild turkey.Mr.VINYARD was sitting behind a log and Mr.TWILLA,thinking he was a turkey,raised his gun and shot. JEFFRIES,of Okla.City,$3,500; insurance $2,500. Hall Drug Company, stock, $4,500,insurance $3,200; drug store building,owned by J.T. JACOCK,of Covington,$3,500,insurance $2,500; L.L. STEVENS, stock of goods, loss $1,200, partly covered by insurance. Stamm & Rubenstein,stock damage several hundred dollars,insured; E.B. SUMROW, damage building,$800,insured; People's Savings Bank, damage $500, insured; Halls Graphic, damage $150,insured. WATTS & ADAMS--A wedding of much interest was solemnized on Tuesday afternoon,the contracting parties being M.S. WATTS and Miss Mabel ADAMS; Rev. F.F. FOWKLES--Dr.W.A. Fowkles passed away Saturday evening after a long and painful illness. He was the son of the late Asa FOWKLES, and born in this county 65 years ago. He married Miss Lizzie HUGHES, who has been his companion for forty years,and survives him. Two children were born to this union,but God called them Home when quite young. Two brothers, Sterling and Dr. Joe Asa FOWKLES; and three sisters, Mrs.P.Y. WHITE,of Union City, Miss Ella FOWKLES and Mrs. Frank HAMBRICK also survive him. The funeral services were held at the home Monday morning,conducted by Revs. Joe McLESKY & J.B. OAKLEY.His remains were interred at Hurricane Hill Tuesday. Will REAGAN,aged 20 years,was drowned in Lewis Creek last Friday.He with several other boys proposed to swim the creek,but he was the only one to venture in the cold water.When mid- stream he was seixed with cramps and drowned before assistance could reach him. Mrs.A.J. FARRIS is seriously ill. Mrs.ROACH,of Fowkles,was the guest of her son,Roe ROACH,at Hotel Easley Monday. Mrs.Tom YARBRO was thrown from a buggy Saturday at Welmer's corner and was taken home unconscious.She suffered no serious injury however, but was confined to her bed several days.Mr.YARBRO,who was also in the buggy,was spilled,but escaped unhurt. The Dyersburg Drug Company has sold their store to James RUCKER ,of Memphis. Mrs.Sarah DuBOSE is recoving from a severe illness. Tom LEDSINGER,who has been quite sick the past few weeks,is reported better. WHITAKER & PEARSON--Mrs.Lillie PEARSON and D.L. WHITAKER,of this city took their friends by surprise by getting married in Memphis last Sunday morning.The wedding took place at the residence of Mr.INGRAM of Memphis. LENOX--Capt.John KENNEY,the genial foreman of the steel gang on the Dyersburg Northern,leaves tomorrow for Ridgely. Mr.MOORE,of Evansville,Ind.,was in our town last Saturday and purchased a large number of saw logs at this place from R.M. HALL,to be shipped to Evansville. ROUTE #4--The people of Pleasant Hill are grieved over the depature of Rev.O.L. MARTIN,who will leave us this week and will go to Henning.Bro.MARTIN came to us 18 months ago. TERSE TELEGRAMS--Governor PATTERSON has offered a reward of $150 for Will T. SAWYERS,who is wanted in Weakley county for killing Miss STRONG two weeks ago. The Plant of the Humboldt Loop and Heading Company was destroyed by fire Saturday. Loss:$5,000. Fire destroys the residence of James RAGSDALE at Union City,while he and his wife were absent from home. Fire at Paducah caused $10,000 damage to Garners Brothers,furniture dealers and Guy Nance & Son,undertakers. Both firms were insured.The origin of the fire is unknown. John BRIDGES,aged 92 years,living near McKenzie, notwithstanding his advanced age,is farming and works in his fields every day. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ STATE GAZETTE DYERSBURG,TN 42ND YEAR NO 20 MAY 16,1907 MISS NEVADA TAYLOR DEAD; CHATTANNOGA,TN; MAY 14--The remains of Miss Nevada TAYLOR,the alleged victim of a criminal assault at the hands of Ed JOHNSON, who was lynched here March 19th,and who died at the home of her siater in Findley,Ohio,will not be brought here for burial. The funeral will take place at the home of her sister at Findley. The cause of Miss TAYLOR's death is attributed to nervous prostration.She once said that her life was blighted and begged to go to the home of her sister and die in peace. Her father,an ex-Federal soldier and keeper of Forrest Hill Cemetery,was at her bedside since a fortnight ago. Miss TAYLOR leaves four brothers and five sisters. NEGROES AFTER OFFICER--Infuriated because three negro women had been placed under arrest by Deputy Sheriff J.D.DODSON,at Buntyn,near Memphis,late Sunday afternoon,a mob of fully 75 negro men and half grown boys attacked the officer and attampted to take his prisioners from him. Deputy DODSON only escaped bodily harm by boarding a streetcar with his prisoners,and fighting off the enraged blacks with the assistance of the conductor and motorman who came to his rescue.A shower of sticks and several passengers were struck but none seriously hurt.Dodson fired several shots over the crowd and enabled the motor man to start the car. HUMMEL,the celebrated lawyer of New York,was convicted of conspiracy some time ago and sentenced to one year in State Prison and fined $500.This verdict has just been confirmed by the Supreme Court. Train laden with Shriners returning home from Conclave at Los Angeles jumped the track,killing 35 and wounding a score of others. Mrs.David TATUM,of Knoxville,did not know it was loaded and pointed her gun st her friend,Mrs.HECKER,with the usual result. Mrs.D.M. Mrs.LONG was a member of the Methodist Church and in health was a worker in every cause of the church.She leaves a married daughter living in Eddyville,Ky.; and a son living here.She was a sister of Buck BUTTERWORTH, & Miss Ophelia BUTTERWORTH,both of this city.The interment took place Monday at 1 o'clock at the Butterworth burial ground and the services were conducted by Rev. ALLEN WHEELER JAILED--Allen WHEELER,who is alleged to have stolen a horse from his brother on the 11th and was out on bond having been arrested in March charged with horse-stealing is again in the county jail.He was arrested by Sheriff KING of Brownsville.A reward of $50 was offered for his capture. WHEELER will be facing two charges at the June Term of Court. GOLLITHAN,of Cordova,Tenn. was found dead in a Memphis park,and it is supposed to have committed suicide.He left a pathetic letter addressed "Sweetheart." To prove his capacity for whiskey,Thomas TAYLOR, a St. Louis negro cab driver,wagered yesterday that he would drink a large quantity of liquor.He consumed the 19 drinks without a break,according to the wager,and died seven hours later. Mrs. W.J. BASS, one of the most prominent ladies in Chattanooga,wife of Major BASS,of the Chattanooga Wagon Company,was killed in a runaway accident. Mrs.Francis CAMPBELL,wife of a prominent citizen,is in jail in Pulaski,Tenn.,on a charge of forgery. B.F. PETTUS, a cousin of Sentor PETTUS,of Alabama and a prominent Democratic politician,was ahot and injured by H.B. TALLEY,a young Republican lawyer,in a street fight at Tulsa,I.T. Mrs.Howard GOULD sues her husband,who is the son of the late Jay GOULD,for divorce,alleging infidelity. Chas.BASS,a nefro employed by the Illinois Central at Memphis,was shot and killed by police officer,Lee CHRISTY. BASS was terrorizing a whole neighborhood and threatened the life of the officer. HOLDER,a respected minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church,and sentence held up pending the hearing of a motion for a new trial. The defendant was the most unconcerned person in the courtroom when the jury filed in at an early hour this morning with its verdict. He sat like a marble statue,and as during the entire proceedings of the trial, evidenced not the slightest change of countenance. His mother,who sat beside him from the beginning of the trial,was not in court when the verdict was announced. Rice A. PIERCE,the ex-congressman,chief counsel for the defense,filed the motion for a new hearing.(I will not rewrite the entire story of the crime,it is in two earlier issues I have already recorded.) The Boy's Story: Lee HOLDER testified that his father and himself worked together on the barn all afternoon of the day he was killed;that he went to the house about four o'clock and chopped wood and did not leave the house that day or night until he had been notified that his father's horse and buggy were found in the creek; that his father took the gun and went after the cows out in the fields; he saw him take the gun,but did not see him bring it back with him; that his brother,Earl,went to get the horse for his father,and helped him hitch up. My dear Mr.WELLS; I am just in receipt of your kind favor of the 26th informing me of the death of Tom LEDSINGER, I am exceedingly sorry to hear that a true a soldier and so good a man and friend should have passed away. He was one of the truest and best men I ever knew.If I had known of his death in time I should certainly have done myself the honor to be at his funeral. A few more years and we will all be gone. ELLIS--of Halls,formerly of this city,died at Halls last Saturday night,aged 45 years. He was sick only a few hours,the end coming suddenly. Dr.ELLIS was at one time a leading physician in Dyersburg and for awhile a partner with Dr. Nic WALKER. He has been Practicing in Halls for the past two years. His remains were interred in the City Cemetery Monday morning,services conducted by Rev. Geo.P. SCOTT. He leaves a son,daughter and two brothers. TOM LEDSINGER--Another noble wearer of the gray passed away when Tom LEDSINGER answered the last roll call Thursday night at 11 o'clock.The immediate cause of his death was due to heart failure. He was raised in Dyer county and grew up in Dyersburg.He was one of the bravest soldiers who wore the gray and was beloved by his comrades in arms.When General STRAHL fell,mortally wounded,he fell back into the arms of Mr.LEDSINGER,who bore him off the field under fire. He leaves a wife;a brother,Robert LEDSINGER,of Columbus,Ga.;a sister,Mrs.Arch FOWKLES,of this county; two sons,C.A. LEDSINGER of Memphis and Thad LEDSINGER,of Ardmore,I.T.; two daughters, Mrs.Will HUDSON,of this city, and Mrs.Bob TARRANT. His brother in Ga.,has just suffered a stroke of paralusis and is not expected to recover. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church for fifty years and an elder in that church 40 years. His remains were interred in the Ferguson Burying Ground Saturday,Rev.J.B. OAKLEY conducting the services. His soldier comrades accompanied in a body the remains to the grave. TENSE TELEGRAMS--John Thompson HARGRAVE,formerly rector of the Trinity Episcopal church at Clarksvill,Tenn.,has been committed to jail in Richmond,Va.,by Federal authorities on the charge of fraudulent use of the mails.His arrest was caused by a letter written to the Tennessee-Kentucky Tobacco Company,of Clarksville,on which he secured over $100.He was requested to resign his pastorate. A bolt of lightening struck a tree and passed from it into a fish pond owned by John ROCKROW,Eastport, N.Y. killing hundreds of trout. Edward BAKER is a human spool.He was arrested in Portsmouth,M.H. with 50 pounds of copper wire wrapped around his body undre his clothes. Operating surgeons have removed a hatpin from the abdomen of John WEICHERS,Des Moines,Iowa,who had been suffering with unexplained pains for years. George MILLER, 14-years-old,of Bridgeport,Conn.,smoked 100 cigarettes a day for six monthe,and is now violently insane. C.W. BAIRD was hanged at Fayetteville,Tenn.,last week for the murder of his wife.Relatives refused to give permission to have him interred by the body of the wife. NEARLY KILLED--Sam QUISENBERRY,for several years connected with Western Union at Memphis,but for the past three weeks manager for the same company in Paducah,Ky.,was seriously injured in a runaway at the latter city Thursday. In company with a lineman,he was driving a team hitched to a light buggy,when the pole of the buggy broke,causing the horses to runaway. QUISENBERRY was dragged for sone distance and received a deep gash on his head. A HERO OF MANY WARS--William KINGSLEY,who resides near Zenith,Carroll County,Tennessee is 123 years old.He is a native of Ireland and was born in 1783.When quite young,he went out on board an English training ship,and later transfered to an English man-of-war.He was assigned to Lord NELSON's squardon and took part in the battle of Trafalgar,in 1805.He also fought in the Crimean War. He was discharged from the English service in 1855 and came to this country and attached himself to an American cruiser,but gave up the life of a sailor in 1857. He located in Stoddard County,Mo.,and joined the Confederate Army in 1861,and took part in several engagements,being wounded several times.He is still hale and bids fair to live several years. MISS DEMETRA WARD--At three o'clock the soul of Miss Demetra WARD passed to its maker.Miss WARD had been sick about a week with typhoid fever.She was born in Crockett County twenty years ago.She was a member of the Methodist Church.She was the sister of Attorney W.H.
