STATE ARCHIVES MICROFILM ROLL #205 TRANSCRIBED AND SUBMITTED BY: SARAH HUTCHERSON FRIDAY AFTERNOON JANUARY 7, 1916 ONE FARMER SHOOTS ANOTHER--JOHN MORRIS is in Hosmer Hospital suffering with a wound inflicted by a shot gun in the hands of BOB BISHOP. The two men, who are farmers living near Booth's Point, had a misundstanding eight years ago. According to MORRIS, he was shot without warning, the first load entering the front of the abdoman, but the charge entered the side, the wound was not fatal. A second charge broke MORRIS' arm as he raised it to protect himself. BISHOP was arrested and released on bond. STORE THIEF CONVICTED--GUS PHILLIPS was caught at Cairo last week, charged with robbing the Baker-Watkins store. City Marshal CHAS. MILLER went to Cairo and brought the negro back. IN THIS WEEK'S ISSUE--appears the announcement of JOHN M. NICHOLS for the office of Sheriff subject to the Democratic primary of May 4th. He was born and reared here and has been a part of Dyer County's history for many years. He was sheriff in this county from 1874 to 1880. (page torn) BONICORD--MR. & MRS. JOHNNIE STEPHENSON spent Sunday with WILL GOLDEN and family. On Sunday night, Dec. 26th, MISS WILLIE SUE PRIVETT and EVERETT JUSTIS surprised their many friends by getting married. On Friday evening, Dec. 23, 1915, MISS LIZZIE MILLER, of this place and MR. JOHNNIE STEPHENSON, of Tigrett were married at the home of the bride's parents. As soon as their residence is completed, they will be at home to their friends in their little bungalow near Sorrell's Chapel. MILLSFIELD--THEO. and NELMA TICKLE made a flying trip to Delphos and also RoEllen last week. MRS. ABBOTT and MISS MARY WALKER made their school childrens' hearts glad by giving them a Christmas tree Thursday evening, Dec. 23rd. MR. & MRS. WILL LANE visited TOM LANE and family recently. Little MISS EVELYN TIBBS visited PAULINE TICKLE last week. CHESTER CARSON has begun worl at G. M. TICKLE's for the next twelve months. EDWARD WHITE and wife spent part of last week with C. C. BOATWRIGHT and family. LIGHT PLANT SOLD--Friendship, Tenn., Jan. 4th. The R. T. COFFMAN electric light plant, supplying lights for the business houses and churches of the city, has been purchased by W. H. SUDBURY, a leading merchant of the city. KIRBY has moved near Friendship. We are sorry to lose him out of our community. MISSES KATHLEEN and CARMA SPENCE, of Crockett County visited theie uncle, C. A. BEASLEY recently. The mother of J. T. BAYSE was buried at Bruceville on New Year. She lived near Friendship. MRS. HARVEY WYRICK and her mother, MRS. CHRONISTER, of Fowkles have been visiting in Arkansas. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--MR. & MRS. SINGER of the east part of town, have a little daughter. MISS HETTIE MURPHEY is visiting her sister, MRS. N. G. McGUIRE near Halls HENRY FOWKLES spent the holidays in Union City, the guest of his aunt, MRS. CHAS. DEITZEL. MRS. S. B. RHODES will leave for Tiptonville, where she was called by the illness of her mother, MRS. DYER. MISS FRANCES PALMER will leave Friday for Dyersburg, to visit MR. & MRS. R. C. Thurmond. ROUTE ONE--ZADA JONES Died at the home of his son near Cross Roads last Monday and his remains were interred in Holly Grove Cemetery. SAMTOWN--S. U. WILLIAMS and family spent the first of Christmas at MR. WILLIAMS sister, MRS. JOHN BOYD. MRS. FANNIE WILLIAMS spent part of Christmas in Samtown visiting her son, S. U. WILLIAMS. MR. & MRS. DAVE JACKSON spent part of Christmas with their daughter, Mrs. EARL DENISON. JIM HILTON and MAMIE FITZGERALD got married during the holidays. JOE SMITH and MISS CALLIE WALKER got married last Thursday. TEMPLETON--MISS LUCY HENDRICKS of Chester County, is the guest of her sister, MRS. C. BURKEEN of this place. PROSPECT--Arthur GUESS and family of Ridgely, spent Christmas week with MRS. McKETHON of this place. MISS CALLIE WALKER and JOE SMITH surprised their friends by driving to Newbern and getting married last Thursday afternoon. They will make their home at Maxey. MR. & MRS. EDD LOCK are the proud parents of a fine boy born Christmas Eve. BOGOTA--BEN JOHN MOORE Died last Sunday morning at 6 o'clock. He had pneumonia and was sick only two weeks. He was a good boy. He leaves a mother, father, three sisters and five brothers to mourn his death. He was laid to rest in Friendship Cemetery. BOGOTA--MRS. EATON was Buried last Monday. She was sick only a short time with Pneumonia. She leaves a husband and children to mourn her loss. CROSS ROADS--CLAIBORNE JONES' father Died on the 27th of typhoid fever. He was buried at Holly Springs, CROSS ROADS--WILMA JONES is dangerously ill with pneumonia. MR. & MRS. Bethel ROGERS visited the latter's parents, MR. & MRS. J. C. PUGH last week. OLIVE BRANCH--Master LESTER ROBINSON, of Dyersburg, visited his cousin, VERBLE ACREE several days last week. Mrs. McKELVA and children of Memphis, visited her sister, MRS. J. N. WEAVER last week. MRS. GUY JENNINGS of Paducah, Ky., spent Christmas with her mother, MRS. WILL WASHINGTON. GWYNN GREEN and family of Gibson County visited his mother, MRS. W. R. SHERROD this week. MISS IRENE SHERROD of this place visited her sister, MRS. WILL MAXWELL last week. MRS. ELIZA CARROLL--Newbern, Tenn., Jan. 6. ; wife of COOPER CARROLL, Died at her home four miles south of Newbern Friday. Death followed a stroke of apoplexy. Her husband and seven children survive. Four sons and three daughters, MRS. G. POWELL, of this place, MISSES LENA and BERT T. CARROLL, OTHA CARROLL, JAMES CARROLL, KENNIE CARROLL, and FRAZIER CARROLL. JOHNSON SCHOOLHOUSE--MISSES FREDDIE and WILLIE OLDS spent the week- end in Bruceville, the guests of their sister, MRS. GUSS PUGH. JOHN PUGH and family of Archer's Chapel, were the guests of his father, J. C. PUGH, recently. FOWKLES--MRS. LUCAS returned to her home Sunday near Chestnut Bluff, after spending a few days with her daughter, MRS. EDNA JONES. IRVING THORNTON was with his parents, MR. & MRS. S. L. THORNTON for Christmas. ==================================================================== FRIDAY AFTERNOON JANUARY 28TH, 1916 JOHNSON SCHOOLHOUSE--MISS BLANCH JONES spent Saturday night with MISS MARY SCREWS at Hawkinsville and attended the debating society. WALTER SMITH and MISS AUDREY HARRIS attended the singing at South Fork Sunday. MRS. CULLIPHER of Bruceville has returned home after visiting here with her sister. MISS TOMMIE FITZHUGH has returned to her home in Halls after last week here with her sister, MRS. J. L. JONES. A. C. SORRELL, of Sorrell's Chapel visited his daughter, MRS. J. C. PUGH. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--MRS. SHELTON, of Covington has been visiting her daughter, MRS. W. E. DALCH. MRS. CLEVE DONALDSON came over from Tiptonville recently to be with MRS. JOHN PARKER, who has been so very ill. MR. & MRS. CLARENCE WILLIAMSON will go to housekeeping in Lenox next Monday. They have fitted up rooms over MR. WILLIAMSON's store and will be extremely comfortably and conveniently located. MRS. WILLIAMSON has, since her marriage, been staying here with her parents, MR. & MRS. C. C. DAWSON. MISS DORA BROWN was slightly injured yesterday when the horse she was driving ran away. She was en route to Bryan's Institute, where she teaches school. Tri-County News. WILLIAMS & BURNELL--Last Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock, at the home of the bride's parents, MR. & MRS. J. M. BURNELL, at Middle City, the marriage of Mr. TROY P. WILLIAMS and MISS JETTIE BURNELL was solemnized by Rev. WILKES, in the presence of a large crowd of relatives and friends. The groom is the son of MRS. IDA WILLIAMS, of Savannah, Tenn. COUNTY CRIMINAL COURT--DRUCILLA GANT was tried by jury who rendered verdict of $250 fine and recommended that the Judge sentence her to the workhouse for 6 months. J. O. CARVER, 4 mile law, was found guilty by jury. Motion was entered for a new trial. RIVER GEORGE, gaming, $10 and costs. NEAL SCROGGINS, public drunkenness, $10 and costs. JERRY CHAMBERS, charged with violating 4 mile law, State's witnessess in this case had left the state and the case was nol prossid on payment of full costs. VAN CARUTHERS, public drunkenness, $10 and costs, sent to workhouse to work off fine and costs. CORRECTION--In our last Friday's issue, we stated that THAD BASYE Died Monday of last week, when, in fact he died at midnight Wednesday and was buried at Palestine Friday afternoon. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--A sixth son was born to MR. & MRS. C. W. MAXEY, January 30. MRS. N. G. McGUIRE of near Halls is the guest of her parents, MR. & MRS. GRANT MURPHY. MRS. IDA SMITH returned from Nashville, after a visit for some time with her daughter, MRS. W. P. ALEXANDER. MRS. H. O. MARLEY and small son of Memphis, are guests of her parents, MR. & MRS. JOHN LATTA. MR. & MRS. CHAS. HUNT are leaving next week for Lakeland, Fla., to spemd several months with their daughter, MRS. J. P. GETZEN. MRS. M. M. MARSHALL went to Nashville to stay with her grandson, CHESTER MARSHALL, while MR. & MRS. ALF MARSHALL are away on an eastern trip. DOROTHY LUCILE JARRED--the one month old daughter of MR. & MRS. A. F. JARRED, Died Tuesday night. Her remains were interred at Fairview Cemetery Wednesday afternoon. CHURCHTON--Born to MR. & MRS. WINDES TAYLOR, a fine baby boy, Sunday. PLEASANT VALLEY--After a long continued illness, MISS EVA BOATRIGHT Died last Saturday morning and was buried at Bailey's Sunday. Bro. BANKS held funeral services at the grave. PLEASANT VALLEY--Grandma DUNAHOO has returned home from a weeks' stay with her son, GILBERT DUNAHOO, near Meachum. PROSPECT--ERNEST and SOLLIE NEWSOM of Delphos, visited their mother, MRS. O. A. JONES last week. LENOX--MISS LURLENE TOWNS, of Churchton, who is teaching here is very sick with pneumonia at this writing. Her mother, MRS. TOWNS, was summoned to her bedside today in the home of Esq. A. A. KIRK, where she is making her home. LENOX--Owing to our long silence, we failed to mention the Death of MRS. EMMA RICHARDSON, of Ayers, who lately moved from here with her son-in-law, ALMUS JONES. FOWKLES--MR. & MRS. CHARLIE BARCROFT of Johnson Grove are visiting her parents, MR. & MRS. J. F. FITZHUGH. FOWKLES--The Death Angel visited the home of MR. & MRS. J. T. BASYE one night last week and took in it's cold embrace, their 17-year-old son, THAD. He had been ill for sometime. He leaves a father, mother, one sister, four brothers and a number of school friends to mourn his death. MEACHUM--MRS. E. E. JOHNSON and little daughter, ANNA FRANCES, of near Maxey, are visiting her sister, MRS. J. A. JONES this week. MEACHUM--The infant of MR. & MRS. JESS OWENS of this place, Died Sunday and was buried at the Prospect Cemetery Monday.
