Mr. * Mrs. EDD McKEE, of Ferguson neighborhood, spent Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. TOM PAYNE. JIM HENRY HUFFINE happened to a very painful accident Monday when he stuck a twenty-penny nail through his foot. Mr. & Mrs. BUB HENDREN spent Saturday night at the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. G. W. SIMPSON. Miss TOMMIE PEACOCK and Mrs. J. R. BROWN and children, of Dyersburg, were at the home of Mr. & Mrs. WADE DAVIS Wednesday afternoon. TRIMBLE--BORN to Mr. & Mrs. IRVEN PARKER, a fine girl. TRIMBLE--The remains of ODELL GRILLS, of Memphis, were brought here Sunday night and buried at Yorkville Monday. Mr. GRILLS leaves a father; two sisters; one brother; and a host of friends to mourn the loss. NEWBERN, TENN., MAY 30TH--CLAUDE BONE, a retired druggist, committed suicide in the cemetery at Yorkville, Tenn., eight miles east of Newbern, at an early hour Monday morning, by drinking a solution of poisonous drugs. He left no reasons for taking his life. It is thought his act was caused by family affairs. At the time his wife was in Dyer, Tenn. He had tried to kill himself before, it is said. HELOISE--Mrs. MYRTLE COLBERT from Cooter, Mo., visited relatives and friends here the first of last week, returning home Tuesday, accompanied by Mrs. CREACY HOUSE, her sister-in-law. GEORGE MOODY's eldest son, EDD MOODY, of Midway, was shot Friday by BUD JOHNSON and was carried to the hospital at Dyersburg Saturday. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--BONNIE RHODES is spendinga few days in Ridgely with friends. RUSSELL RUCKER left this morning for Chicago for a two weeks stay. Mrs. MARY DeARMOND left Wednesday for Topeka, Kansas to visit her son. P. W. HOOD left this week for Memphis, after having spent a month with Rev. R. W. HOOD and family. A. L. DICKERSON, who has been attending school in Nashville, is now in Saluda, S. C., where he has a position. Mrs. J. M. HOOD and daughter, Dorothy, of Memphis, and Mrs. HOOD's mother, Mrs. TINLING, of Chicago, recently visited Rev. R. W. HOOD. W. H. HARRIS, of Humboldt, is here the guest of his granddaughter, Mrs. LON McCALEB. Mr. HARRIS is 86 years of age, but is quite active and takes an interest in the affairs of the world. R. N. STRAUGHN and Mrs. SARAH STORMS were married Saturday, Dr. M. D. AUSTIN officiating. Mrs. NOVELA PARSONS, of Humboldt, is here guest of her daughter, Mrs. LON McCALEB. Miss ELIZABETH FRAZER, of Deer Lodge City, Mont., is the guest of Mr. & Mrs. ALLEN TAYLOR. Mrs. HATTER, of Gardner is here with her sister, Mrs. S. W. BERRY. JIM STONE, of Richwoods neighborhood, was brought to Hosmer Hospital Wednesday for an operation for appendicities. Mr. & Mrs. CHAS. BUSH, after a month's visit to relatives in this section, including Mr. & Mrs. C. R. STUTTS, returned to their home in Kress, Texas. MRS. EMMA A. SWAIL--died at Baptist Hospital, Memphis Tuesday morning. Aged 67 years. Her remains were brought to Dyersburg and interred in City Cemetery. BOGOTA--Misses GRACIE BLEDSOE and VIRGIE AUSTIN, accompanied by HALL and JACK HURD, and Miss FLORENCE HURD and CHARLEY McMACKIN, of Tennemo, spent last Saturday night and Sunday in Obion County, the guests of EM BRADSHAW's family, and attending the concert and children's services at Cunning Chapel. Mrs. JENNIE WESTBROOK from Middle Tennessee, is here on a visit to her sister, Mrs. EPLEY. J. B. MOORE of this place, and Mrs. MARY COLEMAN, of near New Mexico, were married last week and are now at his home. Mrs. LOU WHITE had as her guest last Saturday and Sunday, her sister, Mrs. BELLE MATHENY, from Lake County. CROSS ROADS--Miss AUDREY HARRIS and WALTER SMITH were married Sunday morning at Rev. SAM ANDREWS. Mrs. J. A. HOLLEY is very ill at present. F. B. OLDS and daughter, Miss FREDDIE, were visitors in Gates Tuesday. Mrs. WALTER JACKSON, of Memphis, is visiting her father, J. W. SUMMERLIN. UNION GROVE--Misses MAUDE and CAROL MIDGETT, of Kenton, visited their sister, Mrs. H. H. SCOTT Saturday and Sunday. UNION GROVE--Since last we wrote, this cpommunity has been visited by death and more than one home has been robbed of loved ones. PHILLIP BLANKENSHIP, the little son of Mr. & Mrs. WILLIE MORROW, Died Wednesday, after a few days illness. He was a bright little fellow and it is indeed sad that he was permitted to live in this world only three and a half years. UNION GROVE--After months of suffering from tuberculosis, HARRY FRAZIER Died at his home near Yorkville Saturday morning. Funeral; services conducted at Yorkville Sunday by Elder W. R. HASSELL. HERALD CITY--Mrs. SAM CRENSHAW, Mrs. PAUL CRENSHAW and daughter returned home Monday from Trenton. ZEDNA WALKER, of Dyersburg, is visiting her aunt, Mrs. HAL CRAIG. Mr. & Mrs. BOYD PORCH spent Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. H. D. PORCH at Ft. Hudson. JAMES J. HILL--whose death occurred yesterday, was a unique figure in the railroad world. Nashville Tennessean. ==================================================================== TUESDAY AFTERNOON JUNE 6TH, 1916 CHAMBLIN & HOOD--Miss MAMIE HOOD and Mr. BELFIELD CHAMBLIN surprised their many friends Sunday when they were quietly married in a neighborhood town. The wedding occurred at the Lindo Hotel, Covington, Sunday at 1 o'clock, Rev. BURKE CULPEPPER performing the ceremony. The couple returned home on the evening train and are now at the residence of the groom's mother. The groom is an employee of the American Express Co. He is the son of Mrs. W. T. CHAMBLIN. The bride is the daughter of Rev. R. W. HOOD. SOUTHWEST CORNER--Mr. & Mrs. W. T. SMITH spent Saturday night with her cousin, Mrs. J. W. BARNES, and Sunday with her parents. RAYMOND TRAYLOR and Miss THELMA BAILEY surprised their friends Saturday night by leaving at Mr. PERIGEN's and going off and getting married. ROBERTS & CLARKE--Miss GRACE CLARKE of Woodville, was married Saturday evening to Mr. JACK ROBERTS of this city, the ceremony being said by Rev. E. S. BAKER at the residence of W. E. BROGDON on Oak Street. The bride is the daughter of H. C. CLARKE, a well-to-do farmer of the Woodville neighborhood, Haywood County. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--MARVIN FREIDKIN is the guest of his aunt, Mrs. JESSE ROSENBLOOM in Newbern this week. Mrs. S. E. GROUT, of Bessamer, Ala., is the guest of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. T. L. WELLS. Mrs. W. C. ROBERTSON is visiting her mother, Mrs. S. T. PHILLIPS at Trenton this week. Mrs. N. L. TEAGUE and Mrs. W. DALTON of Gainsville, Texas, are guests of Mrs. H. N. BEARD. Mr. & Mrs. S. H. BASS and son of Munford spent Sunday here, guests of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. C. B. THORNBURGH. Mrs. R. K. ALFORD has returned to her home in Trenton after spending several weeks with her sister, Mrs. R. C. HUCKABA, who has been very ill with slow fever. ==================================================================== FRIDAY AFTERNOON JUNE 9TH, 1916 JOE NICHOLS BURIED--The funeral of JOE NICHOLS, who was killed at Bogota Wednesday morning, was held at Bledsoe Cemetery Thursday afternoon. Mr. NICHOLS is survived by his wife and several children. He was 40 years of age. SISTER A. B. DICKERSON--On June 2, at 2 p. m. mounted the Chariot of Heaven and sailed home to the Glory Land, there to ever be with the Lord and loved ones gone before, after a long illness of three months. She was a very precious character, so faithful, kind, and affectionate wife, a good neighbor, a conscientious character. On Feb. 15, 1885, she and A. B. DICKERSON were united in marriage and to that union were born six children, five daughters and one son. The girls were: Mrs. EMMA BIGGERS, of Ridgely, Mrs. LAUNNA HOWARD, of Ky., Mrs. CLEMIE CLARK and Mrs. BEULAH BARNUM, of this place, and a true husband to mourn the departure. She was 53 years of age. Interment in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Finley. LENOX--J. E. REDD and wife, accompanied by A. A. KIRK and wife made a pleasure trip to Halls last Saturday evening. S. T. VIAR and J. E. REDD have bought a gasoline hay baler. BOGOTA--Mesdames FLORENCE BLEDSOE and FANNIE REEVES and SAM ROBESON were called to Searcy, Ark., to attend the bedside of their brother and father, BEV. ROBESON. OSCAR FREEMAN from Prospect, spent last Sunday here the guest of TOM PRESSGROVE and family. Dr. STRACHN, wife, and son, CHARLEY, visited their daughter and sister, Mrs. GRACE DODD and other relatives in Crockett County. MISS JOSIE WOOD--Died Thursday afternoon at the home of Mr. SELLERS on Cherry Street, while visiting there. She had been complaining for several days, but she was not thought to be seriously ill. She was 59 years of age and is survived by two brothers, DIKE and JIM WOOD. She has been making her home with the former. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the late residence. TRIMBLE--MUN YATES departed this life Monday after a lingering illness of tuberculosis. TRIMBLE--Dr. BAIRD, of Dyersburg, performed an operation on Mrs. GANES last week. Mrs. SMITH and children of Arkansas, were called here by the illness of Mrs. SMITH's mother, Mrs. GANES. Miss JENNIE WILLIAMS of Newbern, was the guest of her sister, Mrs. W. D. MOORE last week. KILLING AT BOGOTA--The neighborhood of Bogota was shocked Monday morning when it was learned that JOE NICHOLS, the popular deputy sheriff, had been killed by JACK CLARKE. There had been bad feeling between the men for sometime but it is not known the immediate cause of the killing. They had had some words over some geese, the property of Mr. NICHOLS, which had been going on CLARKE's place. A shotgun was used and it is reported that NICHOLS was unarmed. The case will be heard in the Circuit Court the third week in the month. BRUCEVILLE--The infant of Mr. & Mrs. LESTER ESPEY is very sick. Mr. FREANO of Bells is here visiting his sons, J. B. and W. B. ESPEY, and his daughter, Mrs. E. F. LOVE. TENNEMO--Mr. & Mrs. ALVA LITTLE are the proud parents of a fine baby girl. She will be called EVERLAND VERN. Mrs. ORA NEEDHAM returned to Lenox Thursday after spending a few days with Mrs. ALVA LITTLE at this place. Mr. & Mrs. MARVIN McGUIRE are the parents of a baby boy. He will be called CHARLES THOMAS. Mrs. LUTHER ETHERIDGE is visiting her parents, Mr. & Mrs. HELMS and family this week. COVINGTON, TENN. JUNE 6--The six-months-old baby of Mr. & Mrs. THOMAS LUMPKIN, who live two miles and a half southwest of Munford, was killed last night about 11 o'clock, when the wind blew the house down. Mr. LUMPKIN's little daughter had her collar-bone broken; Mr. LUMPKIN was slightly injured by falling timbers. In different sections of the county much timber was blown down and many barns were unroofed due to high winds. LISBON SCHOOL HOUSE--CLAUD BONE, druggist of Yorkville, committed suicide Sunday night by drinking deadly poison. Mr. & Mrs. CHARLIE TRIMBLE are the proud parents of a fine boy, it being their first born. E. M. HALL and family of Tatumville, visited at the home of Mr. & Mrs. HIGHLY WILLIAMS Sunday. JOHN DODSON of near Lane, is at the home of A. L. DEW, sick, at this writing. Mr. & Mrs. SMITH, of Kenton, visited their daughter, Mrs. WELDON DENISON from Saturday till Monday and attended the children's day at Mt. Bethesda. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--Mrs. L. E. SHOFFNER and daughter, LETHIA, of Newbern, are guests of the former's sister, Mrs. I. A. NOOE. Mrs. E. A. MILLER of Paris, is here on a visit to her parents, Rev. & Mrs. W. C. WATERS. Mrs. MILLER expects to be here for most of the summer. Dr. I. N. RAWLS' car became unmanageable Thursday morning; running into a ditch, throwing the Dr. out and cutting his hand severely. Mrs. WALKER and little daughter, of Memphis, are the guests of relatives here. Mrs. WALKER will be remembered as Miss JESSIE LAWRENCE before her marriage. Mrs. GEO. FREIDKIN is up again after a two weeks' illness. R. L. McKNIGHT of Menglewood, was called to Memphis recently, on account of the serious condition of Mrs. McKNIGHT. Dr. & Mrs. P. T. TIPTON and little son of Seneth, Mo., are here the guests of the former's sister, Mrs. HENRY NORTON. They are on their way from St. Louis in a Dodge car. RICHARD WATERS, who has been a pupil in Union City Training School for the past three years, and completed the course last week, is at home with his parents, Rev. & Mrs. W. C. WATERS. TOM WILKES, of Finley, was the guest of his cousin, B. A. WILKES yesterday. L. LAZARD of Memphis, is here this week, the guest of his daughter, Mrs. A. SIMON. Miss ELSIE HINTON spent the weekend in Friendship, the guest of Mrs. B. D. McKNIGHT. Mr. & Mrs. ADD AYERS spent several days in Dyersburg this week attending the bedside of their daughter, Mrs. CLAUD STUTTS, who is seriously ill. Newbern Tennessean. SAM FERGUSON of Dyersburg was the guest of B. D. McKNIGHT and family this week. Mr. FERGUSON had not visited Friendship in 25 years and was surprised to see such a growing town. Friendship News. MENGELWOOD--Mrs. PRIMM of Caruthersville, who died Sunday morning at her home on Lincoln Ave., was brought back here for burial at McCULLOUGH's Chapel. Services were at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday. MENGELWOOD--Mrs. DAVE ROBERTSON, little son, ROBERT, and sister, IRENE BAXTER, are in McLemoresville, visiting Mr. ROBERTSON's people. Mrs. RALPH TILLMAN and little children, OLLIE JOE and VIRGINIA SUE, returned Saturday from Newbern, where they had been visiting Mrs. TILLMAN's homefolks, Mr. & Mrs. O. J. RADFORD. MOUNT PISGAH--Mrs. LULA NASH and children spent Saturday and Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. J. L. WATSON. Little Miss MARY LOU HARDISON spent the weekend the guest of Mr. & Mrs. NOAH ROBERTSON at Maury City. G. E. CHEATHAM, of Caruthersville, visited his parents, Mr. & Mrs. N. B. CHEATHAM recently. Mr. & Mrs. GEORGE SUMMITT and son, ROBERT of Bruceville, were guests Sunday of Mr. & Mrs. JAMES WORRELL. ==================================================================== TUESDAY AFTERNOON JUNE 13TH, 1916 SHOWER FOR BRIDE--One of the loveliest affairs of the season was a miscellaneous shower given Saturday afternoon by Miss MILDRED WATERS at her home at Masonic Street in honor of a charming bride, Mrs. BELFIELD CHAMBLIN, who was before her marriage, Miss MAMIE HOOD. On arriving, the guests were asked to write a wish for the bride in a book to be kept by her, after which they were received in the hall by Mrs. CHAMBLIN, Miss WATERS, and Mrs. MILLER, sister of the hostess. Punch was served by Misses MARGARET CHAMBLIN, PAULINE THURMOND, JULIA HOOD and CLARA NORTON. Mrs. HAMNER SCOTT entertained with her music during the afternoon. Little ALICE HOOD, neice of the bride, dressed as an expressman, entered the room drawing a little wagon decorated in white, laden with gifts for the bride. Brick ice cream and cake were served. UNION CITY, TENN. JUNE 12--Attorney General D. J. CALDWELL died this morning after a lingering illness of some weeks. Death came quietly to him in his home on Main Street, surrounded by his family and relatives. Gen. CALDWELL was born and reared near FREEMONT, a country village near Reelfoot Lake in this county. Besides his wife, who was Miss ELLA CLOAR of Freemont, Mr. CALDWELL is survived by five children, Misses ANNIE LAURA CALDWELL and PAULINE CALDWELL, of Union City and Nashville, MARTHA CALDWELL, HAROLD CALDWELL, GERALD CALDWELL; and one sister, Mrs. MARY REEVES; three brothers, I. J. CALDWELL, CHARLES CALDWELL, and ALBERT CALDWELL, all of Union City. MRS. LYDE COTTON--passed away Sunday night at her home on Sampson Ave., after an extended illness. She was born in Rutherford County on Christmas day 74 years ago last Christmas. On March 13, 1873, she was married to TOM COTTON of Dyersburg, while she was a resident of Gibson County. She has since made her home in Dyersburg, Mr. COTTON being in business here at that time. She is survived by her daughter, Miss NELLE BELL COTTON and her stepsons, HARRY and DAN COTTON. The latter have loved and cared for her as their own mother. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon by Revs. W. W. POWELL, C. H. McCORD and M. D. AUSTIN and her remains were laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--Mrs. L. H. TODDY is able to be up after an illness. D. A. ENGLISH of Memphis, was in the city Sunday. J. C. W. Mrs. LEE SCOTT and sister, THELMA JOHNSON, are visiting relatives in Tupelo, Miss. Mrs. MARY J. HADLEY of Covington, is here, guest of her son, ROBERT T. HADLEY. MELBA and MURPH HINTON are visiting their sister, Mrs. TAYLOR SEGRAVES at Luxora, Ark. Mr. & Mrs. SUDE NAIFEH, of Hickman, are visiting her sister, Mrs. A. K. ROBINSON. Mrs. J. W. FOWKLES, of Newbern, spent Saturday and Sunday with her son, NEELY FOWKLES and wife. Mrs. WALTER SMITH, of Covington, is visiting her brother, ROBERT T>HADLEY. She is accompanied by her daughter, EVELYN. LENOX--On account of a severe chill and later becoming quite ill, Prof. A. M. CROWDER closed his singing school at this place. JOHN MONROE--An old resident of Tennessee, JOHN MONROE died at his home near Bogota June 6th, after a short illness. He was 78 years, leaves a wife; two sons, JOHN MONROE and WILLIAM MONROE, and many friends to mourn his loss. His remains were laid to rest at Mt. Hope Cemetery. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--W. S. DRAPER is in Union City today to attend the funeral of Gen. CALDWELL. NEIL STEWART, of Fruitland, was here yesterday to attend the funeral of Mrs. COTTON. Mrs. JAMES WILSON, of Memphis, is the guest of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. B. W. LAUNIS, on East Phillips street. S. P. CALDWELL, of Trenton, nephew of the late Mrs. COTTON, and Mrs. MARY LIDA GILLESPIE, her neice, of Humboldt, were here to attend the funeral. Mrs. PENDLETON FOWKLES and little daughter, MARGARET JANE, left this morning for their home in Lexington, after a visit to Mr. & Mrs. ARTHUR GREEN. JOSEPH E. GALLAWAY, of Arkadelphia, Ark., and Miss NORMA HAMILTON, of Halls, are visiting in the home of her grandmother, Mrs. A. E. HAMILTON. Mr. & Mrs. J. A. WILSON and son, NELSON DAVIS, and MACK STEVENS, are in MEMPHIS for a two weeks' visit to Mr. & Mrs. J. D. NELSON. Miss ANNIE LEE LANSDELL was in Memphis Monday to attend the wedding of Miss SIBYL STRAUGHN to Mr. MILTON GIN. The bride is the daughter of L. STRAUGHN, a conductor on the I. C. R. R. SAMTOWN--After spending two weeks at the home of W. D. JONES, A. GRAVES has returned to his home in San Antonia, Texas. SAMTOWN--Since our last report, Death has visited our community and taken from us Miss IDA McDONALD. She died May 31st, and was buried at Church Grove June 1st. It was so sad as she was just about 20 years old. IDA was a Christian girl. She leaves mother, father, brother and sisters. ==================================================================== FRIDAY AFTERNOON JUNE 16TH, 1916 W. D. MURRAY TRIES TO END HIS LIFE IN RIVER--A man's soul is for sale at Central police headquarters for the price of a cure for the whiskey habit, following his rescue from a water grave before hundreds of women and children on the river front late Wednesday afternoon. W. D. MURRAY, once a prosperous merchant of Ridgely, Tenn., offered a fervent prayer at Central police station following his rescue by LOUIS SARTORE, a soda dispenser. On the verge of delirium tremens and trembling from head to foot he pushed aside a glass of confiscated whiskey that Desk Sergeant CHARLIE GARIBALDI urged him to drink-Removing his coat and hat, MURRAY boarded the Idlewild as she came into port late Wednesday, with a load of excurisionists, and jumped from the deck of the boat in the Mississippi River at the foot of Monroe Ave. SARTORE went in the water after MURRAY, and they were pulled back up on the boat. MURRAY was barely alive when the patrol with Officers DAVIS and SANDERSON arrived and took him to the station. MURRAY gave his age as 47 years. Commercial Appeal. Mrs. ATKINS of Dyersburg returned home after a week's visit with her daughter, Mrs. ANGE. JOE TIPTON, of Dyersburg, was the guest Sunday of Mrs. ANGE. SACK HEATH, of Gates, visited his brother, JOE HEATH, last week. Mrs. JOHN DAVENPORT is suffering with eripeles. CAPT. JOE REID--84, and WARREN D. REID, 75, brothers, are living together on a place in Houkla, Miss., to which their parents moved in 1835. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--A daughter was born to Mr. & Mrs. D. A. CORUM, June 15. The little lady will be called MARY GATEWOOD. Mr. & Mrs. L. G. BROWN have returned from a week's visit to Mr. & Mrs. O. S. BRADLEY in Caruthersville, Mo. Mrs. R. E. GARDNER, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. J. W. POWELL, for quite awhile, returned home Sunday. Mrs. POWELL and little daughter, ANN, accompaning her. Mrs. L. E. SHOFFNER and her daughter, ALETHIA, returned to their home in Newbern yesterday after a visit with the former's sister, Mrs. I. A. NOOE, and attending our chautanqua. GORDON LATTA, GORDON PELHAM, and HICKMAN BENSON, of this city, and GORDON TYLER and OCIE O. GORDON, of Trenton, are spending this week at Tigrett, guests of Mr. & Mrs. JAMES JONES. Mrs. W. L. CAWTHON and daughter of Jackson are guests of Mrs. S. G. PARKER. Col. and Mrs. J. R. GREEN, of Brownsville, are here the guests of their daughter, Mrs. E. T. WEAKLEY. Interment at McCORKLE burying grounds beside his mother, who died in St. Joseph hospital, Memphis, more than a year ago. ROBESON, of Searcy, Ark., had Died. He was at Memphis at the Baptist Hospital. He is survived by four children; SAM, KIM, CARRIE, and ALICE. Two brothers and two sisters; HUSE and MILTON, of Carroll County, Mrs. FANNY REEVES and Mrs. FLORENCE BLEDSOE.
