He was born "on the James River in Virginia" date and name of county not given, but as he was 72 years of age in 1834, he was born in 1762. He was reared in Buncombe County, N. C. where he resided when he enlisted in the winter of 1777 in Capt. Gray's North Carolina company in an expedition against the Cherokee Indians. He enlisted again in the spring of 1777 and served again in Capt. Gray's company, marching against the Cherokee Indians. He enlisted again and served in Capt. Mucklehaney's company (the name also appears as Mclehaney), North Carolina troops and was in the battles of King's Mountain and Eutaw Springs. After the Revolution he lived in Buncombe County, N. C. for many years. He then moved to Rutherford County, Tenn. to Knox County, Tenn., where he lived ten years, to Anderson County, Tenn., and then to Fentress County about 1823.
